UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA FACULTY OF EDUCATION New Media and Learning Technologies in Education (tenure-track Instructor) The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track teaching and educational leadership position at the rank of Instructor in New Media and Learning Technologies in Education. The appointment is expected to commence January 1, 2018 (or as negotiated with the successful candidate). The workload for a tenure-track Instructor includes a teaching assignment of courses scheduled over the academic year in combination with significant educational leadership opportunities, such as curriculum development and innovation. The academic appointment as Instructor will be to one of the four Departments with the best fit in the Faculty of Education. Although primary teaching and educational leadership responsibilities will be within the Master of Educational Technology (MET) program, it is expected that the candidate will also teach one course within their home department. Applicants will have an earned doctoral degree with expertise in New Media and Learning Technologies (or related fields) and experience with post-secondary online teaching and learning, ideally with experience in schools or other informal learning environments; and demonstrated experience with a wide range of educational technologies, applied instructional strategies, and instructional design of online learning. Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications: (a) interdisciplinary interests and experience in new media practices and pedagogy, with an emphasis on the crafts, theories, and technologies as utilized by and relevant to the design of formal and informal online, networked learning spaces; (b) evidence of potential to contribute to academic knowledge in New Media and Learning Technologies (c) evidence of expertise and experience required to contribute to competitively-adjudicated Educational Innovation grant-funded projects; (d) commitments to decolonizing, reconciliation, anti-racist, and social justice approaches to teaching and learning; (e) demonstrated leadership in educational, school, and/or academic contexts. The topic for this special issue will be Media History and Democracy. It is easy to imagine that historical scholarship concerning the internet becoming an important part of this special issue. Democracy, in its many guises, has long been an influential concern for media historians. The issue of democracy brings this thematic issue in contact with numerous approaches to media history. Authors will find connections to be made between democracy and concerns for: history of technology, social history, cultural history, political history, the history of social networks, intellectual history, and more. Literature on fake profiles on Facebook and Twitter

Dear Internet researchers, In the frame of research on political participation online, I am looking for recent literature on fake profiles. I am especially interested in fake profiles on Facebook and Twitter, or anything related that could be relevant. My understanding of the situation is that robots are mainly used on Twitter to create fake accounts; they're used to automatically transfer content and generate audience around certain hashtags. On Facebook however, this operation is more complex since people would beed to subscribe to the fake accounts. But, as some researchers will probably notice, my understanding of the phenomenon is very limited. Any information and literature would be very welcome. Many thanks in advance! Social media, as well as platforms for collaborative consumption, are emerging as new power players that challenge older institutions and disrupt economic sectors like news, hospitality, and transport. Yet, in the light of omnipresent government regulation and intervention, platformization presents us with a very different set of problems and questions than in the West. In the same way, we need to critically interrogate the seemingly ‘natural’ connection between online platforms and ‘global capitalism’, which has been theorized through the notion of ‘platform capitalism’ (Smicek, 2016). Again China presents an odd case, as it is hard to read China as a capitalist society (Nonini, 2008). Against this background, the aim of this special issue is to critically engage with the platformization of China, using China as a method (cf. Chen, 2010) to interrogate, complicate, and complement current research on the global rise of the platform society (van Dijck & Poell 2015). We thus ask in this special issue: what does the platform society mean for China, but also, what does China mean for our thinking about the platform society? This special issue aims to empirically scrutinize different platforms that are currently popular in China. The Chinese process of platformization appears to differ on at least three crucial dimensions with developments in the US and Europe. First, there are vital differences in the political economy of platforms: the ownership structure and business models of Chinese platforms are different from those in the US. This also has implications for the ownership of data, raising issues of surveillance, control and marketing of data (Couldry & Hepp, 2017; Dyer-Witheford, 2014). Second, vital differences need to be taken into account in terms of the architectures and affordances of platforms: user and programming interfaces (and its semiotics), algorithms (what is made visible and invisible), and infrastructures (how are third parties plugged into the platform ecosystem) (Hookway, 2014; McVeigh-Schultz & Baym, 2015; Plantin et al., 2016). Finally, Chinese online platforms appear to be characterized by particular types of user practices and cultures, which differ from those in other parts of the worlds (Poell, de Kloet & Zeng 2014; Qiu, 2016). Given that the societal impact of new technologies is for an important part shaped by how these technologies are integrated in social practice, these differences greatly matter. The contributions we solicit for this special issue will each focus on one specific type of platform, following a typology based on a preliminary inventory (see below). We envision contributions that analyze a particular platform and its role in societal relations through the three dimensions sketched above. These contributions are expected to build on the fields of media and cultural studies, software studies and/or platform studies, in their investigation of one of the following types of platforms: 1. Public social media (e.g. weibo and douban) 2. Private social media (e.g. weixin). 3. News and search platforms (e.g. baidu) 4. E-commerce services (e.g. taobao) 5. Media sharing platforms (e.g. youku and tudou) 6. Transport platforms (e.g. taxi didi and mobike) 7. Food services (e.g. meituan and eleme) 8. Dating platforms (e.g. tamtam and blue’d) Evidently, we will welcome strong paper proposals, focused other types of platforms as well. Timeline 1200-word extended abstracts should be submitted by mail to Jeroen de Kloet (b.j.dekloet(a)uva.nl) and Thomas Poell (Poell(a)uva.nl) by July 1, 2017. The abstract should articulate: 1) the issue or research question to be discussed, 2) the methodological or critical framework used, and 3) indicate the expected findings or conclusions. Decisions will be communicated to the authors by July 15, 2017. Full papers of the selected abstracts should be submitted by February 28, 2018. All submitted manuscripts will be subject to a rigorous blind peer-review process. All accepted manuscripts will be published online first. The planned printed publication date is an issue of CJC in 2019. The conference will celebrate and continue FSN's proud tradition of offering an enthusiastic space for interdisciplinary researchers at all levels to connect, share resources, and further develop their research ideas. In addition to panel presentations, the two days will feature social events (including our regular fan studies quiz, plus this year our fifth birthday party!), speed geeking, and workshop discussions. We are delighted to welcome Dr Louisa Stein as the keynote speaker for FSN2017. Louisa is Assistant Professor of Film and Media Culture at Middlebury College, where she teaches classes on remix culture, spectatorship, YouTube, and gender and sexuality in media. Louisa is author of *Millennial Fandom: Television Audiences in the Transmedia Age* (2015), and co-editor of *Sherlock and Transmedia Fandom* (2012) and *Teen Television: Programming and Fandom* (2008). The event will also feature a plenary address from Professor Matt Hills, who, due to being the keynote of the first ever FSN conference, will reflect on the past five years of the network and the fan studies field. Matt is Professor of Media and Journalism at the University of Huddersfield, where he is co-director of the Centre for Participatory Culture. He has written six sole-authored research monographs, starting with the influential *Fan Cultures* in 2002 and most recently with *Doctor Who: The Unfolding Event* in 2015, as well as publishing more than a hundred book chapters and journal articles in the areas of media fandom, cult film/TV and audiences in the digital era.
