AoIR Friends! Conference Attendees! Do you have some old floppy disks, zip drives, dumb smartphones, or other weird and wonderful carriers of unreadable data? If you’re packing your bags to come to AoIR in Montreal, we invite you to bring some of this ’stuff’ to donate** material to the Museum of Random Memory’s Shrine to Lost Data. What’s the Museum of Random Memory? It's a series of experiments in the public sphere to explore and critique everyday practices of creating future memories through digital archiving. At AoIR, we’re holding one of these exhibitions — which includes a Shrine to Lost Data — as an experimental session. On Friday, Oct 12, between 4-8:00 p.m., you can bring your offering to The Shrine !!! Meanwhile, over the next few days, we’ll be gathering your stories, images, and sounds, which we’ll use in Friday’s event to remix, remediate, recycle, or otherwise mess around with, to focus on the connections between the elusive materiality of data storage, personal memory, digital decay, dispreservation, and data loss. ALSO at this session, you’ll get to enjoy a live show by the fabulous DJ Ripley (AKA Larisa Kingston Mann, who will be remixing some of the audio pieces that have been donated by conference-goers in the next few days. You’ll see a flyer in your AoIR conference bag to learn more about this event, but for now, it's time to dig into your cupboards, look in the back of your drawers, take the lid off the shoebox, clear the cobwebs from the corners of your garage, or otherwise find some things to donate to our Shrine. CALL FOR WORKSHOPS at IEEE WoWMoM 2019 20th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2019) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ June 9-12, 2019 - Washington DC, USA SCOPE AND OVERVIEW The IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (IEEE WoWMoM 2019), now in its 20th edition, is a premier forum for networking, software systems, and multimedia research in the wireless/mobile area. The WoWMoM organizing committee invites proposals for full-day or half-day workshops affiliated with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to provide a platform for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than at the conference itself. All WoWMoM workshops are expected to enable stimulating discussions of state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and perhaps controversial topics. Workshops should be organized to promote lively interaction. Workshop proposals are solicited in all areas and topics pertaining to wireless mobile and multimedia networking, and workshops addressing emerging research directions in these areas are highly welcome in particular. Accepted WoWMoM 2019 workshop papers will be included and indexed in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, showing their affiliation with IEEE WoWMoM. We expect all accepted workshops to adhere to a common paper submission and reviewing schedule, as outlined in the dates indicated below. Workshop co-chairs will be interacting with organizers of accepted workshops to ensure a high quality workshop program. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Each workshop proposal must include at least the following fields: The full name of the workshop and its intended acronym. The names, addresses, and a short bio (up to 200 words) of the organizers (up to three, from at least two different institutions). A brief description (up to 1 page) of the technical issues that the workshop will address, and the reasons why the workshop is of interest at this time. Some consideration on the communities/groups it intends to attract should be included. The names and affiliations of at least ten program committee member candidates. The planned format of the workshop (full-day/half-day) as well as a tentative schedule that demonstrates the strategy to facilitate lively discussions and the involvement of the attendees. The names of potential keynote speakers, if a keynote speech is included in the planned format of the workshop. CFP AAG 19: Gendering the Smart City: Towards just and feminist urban futures

We welcome submissions for the 2019 American Association of Geographers meeting in Washington, DC April 3-7. This large interdisciplinary conference regularly attracts 6-8,000 attendees across a broad spectrum of disciplinary homes. Gendering the Smart City: Towards just and feminist urban futures Organisers: Ryan Burns, Ayona Datta, Nabeela Ahmed, Max Andrucki The critical smart cities research agenda continues to develop insights into evolving relations between the digital, the urban, and socio-political process. Attention has broadened from taxonomies and ontological questions, to ideal-types and dominant epistemologies, to interrogating the “actually-existing smart city”. This trajectory has brought to the fore variegations and fissures in the politics of the smart city within which elements of social justice can appear, where smart city visions can adapt to and address low-tech infrastructures and where populations can contest the smart city’s often business-friendly, empiricist, governmentalizing, and neoliberal tendencies. Researchers have, indeed, recently illuminated smart city models that might contain necessary conditions for making strides toward more just, accessible and participatory urban life. However, in all this literature, researchers have neglected the underlying gendered dynamics of these processes. Feminist and queer theory can provide productive new ways forward in critiquing smart cities agendas globally. Such theoretical frameworks can illuminate how bodies, subjectivities, labour, aspirations, anxieties, temporalities, in/visibilities, and social time are colonized and silenced in smart cities. From critical GIS to critical data studies, to digital geographies and through creative digital practices, researchers have leveraged these frameworks to show the uneven and gendered impacts that digital technologies have across a range of metrics of difference. Applying these frameworks to smart cities can illuminate the ways new forms of technological urbanism subtend socio-political inequalities, epistemological legitimacies, and sustained social injustices. Even further, doing so may deepen our understandings of how gender, sexuality, race, class and geopolitical power frame the imagination and governance of smart urban futures. To this end, we welcome abstract submissions related to a range of related feminist, queer, and critical theories, that deepen our understanding of smart cities as theory, policy and lived practice. Both the European Union and Europe as a region have generally played a crucial role in shaping the governance of the internet, at the global, regional and national levels. >From a geopolitical perspective, the EU has been one of the early actors advocating for the internationalisation of the DNS system and, more generally, for the enhancement of the multi-stakeholder governance model. >From a normative point of view, EU institutions as well as Member States have deeply affected highly sensitive internet-related issues, such as privacy and data protection, digital market competition, consumers' rights, copyright, e-commerce, content regulation, the right to be forgotten, etc. On the institutional level, some of the most interesting cases of recent constituent policies have emerged from the European Union, leading to the establishment of new agencies such as the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) and the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). Beyond the EU, some European intergovernmental organisations, such as the Council of Europe (CoE), have developed structured initiatives to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law on internet governance issues. Further, a number of European initiatives, such as the European Dialogue on internet Governance (EuroDIG) and the Global internet Policy Observatory (GIPO), have facilitated the transfer of ideas, knowledge, policies and institutional arrangements towards other countries and geographic areas. Finally, European NGOs as well as some European internet companies are currently advancing alternative visions and values about the internet and its governance, enriching the set of internet governance approaches as well as available design options. The third edition of the European Multidisciplinary Conference on Global Internet Governance Actors, Regulations, Transactions and Strategies (GIG-ARTS 2019), will be held exactly twenty years after the entry into force of the Amsterdam Treaty and ten years after the Lisbon Treaty, which are milestones in the history of the European integration process, preparing the EU for enlargement and further deepening of competences, and reinforcing the centrality of democratic principles and the protection of fundamental rights as the Union's foundation. After having addressed “Global Internet Governance as a Diplomacy Issue” at its first edition held in Paris in 2017, and "Inequalities in Internet Governance" at the second edition held in Cardiff in 2018, the 2019 GIG-ARTS conference will explore the role of Europe in the global governance of the internet. CFP AAG 19: Gendering the Smart City: Towards just and feminist urban futures

We welcome submissions for the 2019 American Association of Geographers meeting in Washington, DC April 3-7. This large interdisciplinary conference regularly attracts 6-8,000 attendees across a broad spectrum of disciplinary homes. Gendering the Smart City: Towards just and feminist urban futures Organisers: Ryan Burns, Ayona Datta, Nabeela Ahmed, Max Andrucki The critical smart cities research agenda continues to develop insights into evolving relations between the digital, the urban, and socio-political process. Attention has broadened from taxonomies and ontological questions, to ideal-types and dominant epistemologies, to interrogating the “actually-existing smart city”. This trajectory has brought to the fore variegations and fissures in the politics of the smart city within which elements of social justice can appear, where smart city visions can adapt to and address low-tech infrastructures and where populations can contest the smart city’s often business-friendly, empiricist, governmentalizing, and neoliberal tendencies. Researchers have, indeed, recently illuminated smart city models that might contain necessary conditions for making strides toward more just, accessible and participatory urban life. However, in all this literature, researchers have neglected the underlying gendered dynamics of these processes. Feminist and queer theory can provide productive new ways forward in critiquing smart cities agendas globally. Such theoretical frameworks can illuminate how bodies, subjectivities, labour, aspirations, anxieties, temporalities, in/visibilities, and social time are colonized and silenced in smart cities. From critical GIS to critical data studies, to digital geographies and through creative digital practices, researchers have leveraged these frameworks to show the uneven and gendered impacts that digital technologies have across a range of metrics of difference. Applying these frameworks to smart cities can illuminate the ways new forms of technological urbanism subtend socio-political inequalities, epistemological legitimacies, and sustained social injustices. Even further, doing so may deepen our understandings of how gender, sexuality, race, class and geopolitical power frame the imagination and governance of smart urban futures. To this end, we welcome abstract submissions related to a range of related feminist, queer, and critical theories, that deepen our understanding of smart cities as theory, policy and lived practice.
