*DH Downunder 2018 – 3-7 December, University of Sydney, Australia* *Registrations open <https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/dhrg/digital_humanities/dh_downunder_2018>* Full week cost is $200 ($150 Early bird) Early bird registrations end on October 31 Digital Humanities Downunder is now accepting registrations for the 2018 summer institute for training in digital research methods and approaches. This low-cost event aimed at students, academics, professionals and early career researchers is co-organised by the Department of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney in partnership with the Digital Humanities Research Group at Western Sydney University, with classes also offered by colleagues from the Australian National University, and the University of Victoria in Canada. The five day program includes classes on digital media methods, introduction to linked open data, projects and writing, introduction to databases, R for data wrangling and visualisation and distant reading. There will be public lectures and professional development activities and a Sydney Ideas seminar - *Digital Publics: Hidden and Untraceable Data* - leading into the event to publicly discuss current and emerging themes of digital media research, proudly hosted by the University of Sydney’s Department of Media and Communications. On the Friday the national HASS DEVL digital infrastructure project will be running a ‘DH Pathways’ event, aimed at increasing awareness of digital research and tools. In 2018 DH Downunder takes place from 3-7 December, on the campus of the University of Sydney in the central Quadrangle building. Registration for ACM FAT* 2019 (Atlanta, Georgia, Jan 29–31 2019) opens on Thursday, October 18 at 12:00 PM ET, at www.fatconference.org. The 2019 ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (ACM FAT*) is an interdisciplinary conference to connect social, technical and policy domains around broad questions of fairness, accountability and transparency of computing systems. ACM FAT* spins off from the successful FAT/ML workshops and sister workshops in other domains, seeking to connect these issues across a much wider variety of computing areas and applications. ACM FAT* features tracks on theory and security; statistics, machine learning and data mining; applications (NLP, machine vision, search engines and other systems); systems; HCI; measurement and audits; empirical studies; and law, policy and humanistic/critical analysis. The Tutorial Session will be held on the 29th Jan and the General Session on 30-31st Jan. Tiered pricing is available, with reduced rates for academics, government representatives, students and non-profits. Students and non-profits will be able to attend the General Session for as little as $50. Participants in financial need can also submit an application for support with fees and travel.
