On this exciting and unique master’s programme you will gain advanced knowledge of how social media shape how political power is exercised in today’s turbulent world. The curriculum blends world-leading scholarly research with case study analyses of how political communication works in the real world. The digital age has produced some of the most remarkable developments in modern history. The Arab Spring, Occupy, Brexit, the #MeToo movement, the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, the growth of online misinformation and automated propaganda, fierce debates over online "filter bubbles" and fake news, the resurgence of the populist right and a new populist left, the growth of online hate speech, mass microtargeting of political messages via email and social media, and concerns about the growing power of social media platforms, algorithms and big data over the lives of citizens. These developments have sent shockwaves around the world. Amid the chaos there is now an urgent debate about whether the mass use of social media is leading to new types of politics. Do social media help concentrate power in the hands of a small elite? Or do they help decentralise power and engage ordinary citizens in democratic citizenship? Do social media enable individuals and organisations to express themselves, exchange opinions and coordinate with others? Do they encourage the diffusion of propaganda, false information, incivility and hatred? How do social media shape how political beliefs are formed among mass publics? On this innovative MA programme you will conduct advanced, in-depth analysis of the complex relationships between social media, political influence and power. THEMES FOR THIS ISSUE: Research in the field of media innovations focusses on understanding change as it relates to new players in the media landscape, new roles of media users, new business models and new media formats (cf. Storsul and Krumsvik, 2013). To date, studies of media innovations have primarily explored media innovations that occur within established media organizations and institutions, but not significantly explored the perspective of societal change. However, media innovations do have consequences for social processes, with particular regard to participation, empowerment and democracy. To date, the social implications of media innovations remain significantly under-researched. This Special Issue aims to address this research gap. We invite a range of theoretical and empirical research. Call For Papers CEPE 2019: 28–30 May, 2019, Norfolk, Virginia, USA CEPE (Computer Ethics—Philosophical Enquiry) is a leading international conference and has played a significant role in defining the field since its first event in 1997. CEPE is held biennially, and is organized by INSEIT<https://inseit.net/> (the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology). For CEPE 2019, the conference theme will be Risk and Cybersecurity. We encourage submissions on this theme, but welcome submissions on any topic related to ethics and computers. Risk and Cybersecurity Cybersecurity is of pressing and ever-expanding importance to governments, organizations, and individuals as ever more of our lives becomes digitally rendered, analyzed, manipulated, and stored. Even as cybersecurity issues present threats to us both individually and collectively, cybersecuritization—the political action of consolidating power and control through rhetorics of “cybersecurity”—threatens people and peoples in different ways. Risk is central to computer ethics in numerous other ways as well. Risk abounds online as we figure out how to negotiate and protect identities that are increasingly visible across many parts of our lives, to persons but to companies and algorithms as well. Risk has always been central to engineering ethics, and computer ethics continues to negotiate shifting boundaries of the morality of whistleblowing along with changes in the economic, social, legal, and human costs of a hacked database. These issues are complicated further by innovations in robotics and the internet of things, which spread risk across what once was an online/offline boundary and into the smallest cracks of our lives, from military and domestic robots, to smart cities and smart homes, and to the digital assistants and baby monitors in our kitchens and bedrooms. Literature on Networks and Online Health Communities

There is also a lot of work on networks and expertise communities (e.g. Q&A, wikipedia, open source software lists), but as some of the aforementioned work points out, expertise in OHC’s are only part of the dynamics. Warm regards Jonathon Hutchinson (Program Chair) Trust in the System Trust is one of the most critical issues of our time: trust in our fellow Internet users; trust in the information we encounter in our online environments; trust in the data we produce and in the data that are continuously produced about us; trust in the algorithms that process and evaluate these data; trust in those who create the digital content we consume; trust in platforms and intermediaries that maintain our online spaces and that manage and trade in these data; trust in our national and regional governments that engage citizens over the Internet; trust in grassroots, social welfare and non-government organisations; trust in the regulatory bodies and political systems that are in charge of governing these systems of exchange. At every level, and spurred on by a rise in extremism and increased suspicion of others, our trust in the system is being challenged, presenting challenges for existing institutions and the opportunity to imagine new ones. The 2019 conference of the Association of Internet Researchers addresses these questions of trust. Trust is one of the techno-emotions that shape sociality online (Svedmark, 2016), and is part of the process that guides the choices we make on the Internet (deLaat, 2008). Consequently, the data about us and our interactions that are produced and processed across a variety of digital devices encapsulate deeply personal and intimate facets of our digital selves. For the most part, these data are managed by commercial third-party platforms and applications, where many users have proven unable to exercise appropriate control of their data. While governments and other regulatory bodies seek to find appropriate settings for governance of a transnational, datafied society, trust in the government is an option only for the privileged, and undermined by the rise of populist and partisan regimes. At the same time, developers and activists have proposed and introduced a number of alternative, supposedly more trustworthy systems of their own, from Tor to Blockchain and beyond, but these, too, frequently embed only the limited worldviews of their creators. But ‘we’ are many, diverse, complicated, and contradictory, and in Internet research as much as in its development, governance, and use it is crucial that the voices of the marginalised finally be heard. As Internet researchers at the intersection of critical studies of technology, culture, and society, the present crisis of trust in the system presents us with opportunities to seek new insights into these issues and provide advice and guidance for individuals, communities, governing bodies, policy-makers, and platform providers. While emergent technologies attempt to bridge the gap between users, developers, and processes, there is still significant work to be undertaken on critical issues such as rebuilding trust for Internet users. The 2019 AoIR conference in Brisbane, Australia, invites contributions that explore the question of whether we can still have, or how we might regain, trust in the system: in a world of unscrupulous actors and dubious data, how can we know what and whom to trust? Indeed, how might we change the system itself – rethinking, redesigning, rebuilding, repurposing it – to provide a more trustworthy experience for a broader, more diverse, more inclusive community of Internet users? The 2019 Association of Internet Researchers conference welcomes contributions that address these themes, including but not limited to the following questions: * Trust in technologies and platforms: how might users operate safely on commercially owned platforms? What role do emergent, decentralised, autonomous technologies play? * Trust after Cambridge Analytica: what is the impact of this highly mediatised data breach? Do users understand the data trails of their actions on the Internet? * Interpersonal trust: can we trust our friends on the Internet? Does authenticity become a central element of trust online? * Trust in governance: if national governments lack leverage over transnational tech giants, who do citizens trust to act in their interest? How do powerful actors in Internet governance justify their influence, and how can they be held to account? * Trust in information: as mis- and disinformation spread, how do we identify trustworthy sources of information? * Trust by design: how can design and development processes be reshaped to ensure greater inclusion of diverse and marginalised communities? * Trust in theory: what theories of trust are available to describe the present moment and provide pointers to possible futures? * Trust in black boxes: how can scholars, civil society, regulators, and users interrogate the workings of only partially visible communication systems? What ethical, methodological, and practical challenges must they confront in doing so? * Trust in translation: how do issues of trust play out in different national and cultural contexts? Call for Panelists: Hearing/non-hearing session during Media Art History 2019

Dear All, I am looking for panelists for my session on experiencing hearing and non-hearing in technology and art for 2019 Media Art History RE:SOUND conference, which will be held in Aalborg University (Denmark) on August 20-23, 2019. This session is part of Track 4: Art and Technology: Methodologies, Practices, Histories. I propose two paths to explore the hearing/non-hearing theme: The first one is related to do the physical condition of non-hearing, namely the deafness, such as: - past, present and future of sound amplification - the impact of deaf-targeted amplifying equipment on mainstream technology (e.g. cybernetics, sound film) - the deaf experience of sound and music (e.g. vibrations, amplification) - the “translation” of music into signing - usage of deaf-targeted instruments in art The second path relates to deliberate non-hearing, especially in urban public spaces: - practices of isolation from unwanted/unpleasant/threatening sounds - both everyday and artistic strategies of sound elimination or selection - architectural aspects of creating quiet or soundproof rooms and spaces - headphones, walkman, ipod… - the tools of sound elimination and selection - hearing and non-hearing in different cultural contexts I warmly invite you to consider addressing abovementioned themes but – as it is just a partial list of pertinent topics - proposals on other issues related to hearing/non-hearing in technology and art are very welcomed. Submit at www.geomedia.se<http://www.geomedia.se> The 3rd International Geomedia Conference: “Revisiting the Home” Karlstad, Sweden, 7-10 May 2019 The special theme of Geomedia 2019 is “Revisiting the Home”. It responds to the prevailing need to problematize the meaning of home in an “era of globalized homelessness”, in times of extended mobility (migration, tourism, multiple homes, etc.) and digital information flows (notably social media). While such ongoing transitions point to a condition where home-making becomes an increasingly liquid and de-territorialized undertaking, there is also a growing preoccupation with questions of what counts as home and who has the right to claim something as (one’s) home. Home is a construct that actualizes the multilayered tensions between belonging, inclusion and security, on the one hand, and alienation, exclusion and surveillance, on the other. The theme of Geomedia 2019 centers on how media are culturally and materially integrated in and reshaping the home-place (e.g., the “smart home” and the “home-office”) and connecting it to other places and spaces. It also concerns the phenomenological and discursive constructions of home, ranging from the intimate social interaction of domestic spaces to the popular (and sometimes politicized) media nostalgia of imagined communities (nation states, homelands, etc.). Ultimately, “Revisiting the Home” addresses the home as a theoretical concept and its implications for geomedia studies. The theme will be addressed through invited keynote talks, a plenary panel, film screenings and artistic installations. Participants are also encouraged to submit proposals for paper sessions addressing the conference theme.
