The deadline for submissions to the ATI Challenge has been extended to May 31, 2018. Please be in touch if you have any questions. It would be great to receive some submissions from the AOIR community. --- The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR, www.qdr.org) invites faculty and advanced graduate students in social science and other disciplines that employ qualitative data and methods to submit proposals to participate in the Annotation for Transparent Inquiry (ATI) Challenge (https://qdr.syr.edu /ati/ati-challenge). ATI (https://qdr.syr.edu/ati) is a new approach to transparency in qualitative and multi-method research developed by QDR and the open-source software company Hypothesis (https://hypothes.is/) ATI enriches articles by linking "analytic notes" discussing data generation and analysis, excerpts from underlying data sources, and even the data sources themselves, directly to digital manuscripts. Participants in the ATI Challenge will use annotation technology to enhance manuscripts that they plan to submit to a leading journal in their discipline. They will play a key role in demonstrating how qualitative and multi-method researchers can join and benefit from academia’s ongoing transparency revolution. Participants will also receive an award of $2,000, as either an honorarium or research support. In addition, they will attend a workshop in New York City in November 2018 at which they will meet and network with other scholars who share a commitment to making their research accessible and evaluable. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by QDR. The postdoc will work with the team to design and enact a variety of (bot-based) algorithmic, semi-automated and/or manual social media interventions. We will analyze the impact of interventions on multiple outcomes, including: individual knowledge, beliefs and behaviors, and the formation and dynamics of contagions. The postdoctoral associate will have opportunities to engage in all aspects of the study, including presenting research at conferences and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and special interest publications. This is an unparalleled opportunity for a motivated postdoctoral associate: as part of the Social Innovation on Drug Resistance (SIDR) Program, the associate will be part of a growing, interdisciplinary community of researchers from across Boston University’s schools and colleges. Dear Colleagues, The Cultural Matters Group at the Department of Sociology, Uppsala University on Sept. 27-28 organizes a symposium called Dis / Connection: Conflicts, Activism and Reciprocity Online and Beyond and we look forward to receiving your papers! Deadline for submissions is June 18, 2018. The symposium focuses on a fundamental aspect of social relationships, namely the idea of connection. We invite abstract submissions on the possibilities of connectivity, but also the problems and promises of the act of disconnection. Digital networks embedded in everyday lives have transformed virtually every aspect of social life – from intimate relations with family and friends to the collective acts of digital activism. Digital relations and connections are our starting point for a broader discussion of notions of connectivity and how they are developing, failing, or simply being reproduced. Therefore, we also focus on the idea of disconnection as a voluntary act to take control over one’s use of digital technologies, as an act of resistance and of saying no to the opaque structures of power and control in the networked society. The goal is to further the discussion on the gains, costs and possibilities of ethical life in the culture of hyperconnectivity. The symposium also aims to address destructive functions of connected living, such as surveillance, trolls, selfies, fake news, fake news accusations, sexual harassment, click baiting, commercialism, terrorism, viruses, spam, and the colonization of private life. In other words, we are interested in how connectivity and disconnectivity can give rise to and facilitate social inclusion and democratic processes, as well as exclusion, isolation and conflict. Confirmed keynote speaker Adam Fish is a cultural anthropologist and senior Lecturer at the Sociology Department at Lancaster University. He will give a talk entitled “Anthropology, Atmosphere, Anthropocene: Drones, Disruptive Justice, and the Disruption of the Earth.” The talk will include insights from his latest research on the use of drones in various contexts: surveillance, environmental protection, and war. Fish is the author of Technoliberalism and the end of participatory culture in the United States (2017, Palgrave) and After the internet (2017, Polity), together with Ramesh Srinivasan, and is currently working on a book called Hacker States. Further speakers to be announced. Mako Ishizuka, Japanese artist based in Paris, will conduct a performance art piece in parallel with the talks and paper sessions. *Call for papers: Sexual Violence, Social Movements, and Social MediaAda: A Journal of Gender, New Media, and TechnologyIssue 13 3/4* Co-editors: Pallavi Guha (University of Maryland, College Park), Radhika Gajjala (Bowling Green State University), and Carol Stabile (University of Maryland, College Park) Over the past decade, social media have facilitated practices of sexual violence (stalking, doxxing, harassment, bullying, revenge porn, genocide, etc.) against socially and economically marginalized individuals and groups. At the same time, social media have allowed survivors and allies to report and draw attention to sexual violence, establishing patterns and sharing testimony about the crimes committed against them. Feminist activists throughout the world have been using social media to draw attention to and fight against sexual violence. Using hashtags on Twitter and Instagram, posting images on Tumblr, blogging, and otherwise circumventing traditional structures of power, protected by media gatekeepers, feminists have enhanced awareness and advocated for change. This issue invites research and scholarship that examines sexual violence through multiple lenses (including but not limited to race, class, immigration status, caste, gender orientation, religion) on a range of topics related to social media. We are particularly interested in work that contributes to theorizing and working toward social change. Contributions in formats other than the traditional essay are encouraged; please contact the editor to discuss specifications and/or multimodal contributions. Drawings, sounds, videos that come along with written explanations of their narratives are also welcome. You can send your proposal as a .pdt or .doc document before the June 25, 2018 deadline. Dear all, I am conducting a research study to explore the use of online mental health self-help programmes and associated technology by people with mental health problems in their everyday lives. ‘*Online mental health self-help programmes*’ are website-based and app-based self-help programmes offered as a way to improve mental well-being and cope with mental health problems. I am inviting eligible individuals to anonymously complete a 20-25 minute online survey, with the option of also participating in an individual interview. This mini-track includes research that seeks to better understand how digital and social media can foster (or serve as hindering factors for) diversity and inclusion in multiple settings in a world that is increasingly local and global at the same time. *** CALL FOR TRACK PROPOSALS *** The 34th ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC 2019) St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus, April 8-12, 2019 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… *** Submission Deadline: May 25, 2018 *** For the past thirty-three years the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) has been a primary and international forum for applied computer scientists, computer engineers and application developers to gather, interact and present their work. The ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (SIGAPP) is the sole sponsor of SAC. The conference proceedings are published by ACM and are also available online through ACM's Digital Library. SAC is based on a flexible structure of mostly self-contained and self-managed tracks. Over the past years SAC hosted tracks on a variety of timely topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics, Computer Security, Database Technology, Data Mining, Embedded Systems, Evolutionary Computing, Distributed Systems and Grid Computing, Mobile Computing, Programming Languages, Software Engineering, and Web Technologies. SAC 2018 included 40 tracks that attracted 931 paper submissions from 50 countries; 235 submissions were finally accepted as full papers (25% acceptance rate). The 34th Annual SAC meeting will be held in April 2019 in Limassol, Cyprus, and is hosted by the University of Cyprus. The conference Organizing Committee solicits proposals for organizing and hosting tracks. Prospective track chairs should submit an up to two-page description for organizing a track, which should include at least the following items: 1) The proposed title for the track with a description of its aims, topics it will cover, and rationale for having such a track in SAC. This rationale should refer to any related conference events that are held regularly and why the proposed track differs from them or complements them. The proposed track should not be overly general but also not overly specialized, thus being able to attract a wide audience of people sharing similar interests. Proposals from industry are also encouraged. Despite its name, SAC also welcomes topics of mostly theoretical nature, provided there is clear practical potential in applying the results of such work. 2) A short description of the activities the track chair(s) will undertake upon acceptance of the proposal, to disseminate the call-for-papers for the track, and to manage the review process. (Current Track Chairs guideline document is posted on the SAC 2019 website). 3) A short CV of the prospective track chair(s) with reference to research interests and publication record directly related to the themes of the proposed track, and any previous experience of involvement in the organization of similar events (in the interest of brevity, reference to a personal web page where such information can be found will be sufficient). All proposals will be reviewed by the Program Committee using the criteria described above. The Committee reserves the right to: (1) accept a proposal as is, (2) require modifications before acceptance, (3) recommend merging of similar proposals with a considerable overlap in the topics addressed (in this case the track chairs of the different proposals will be asked to form a single track), (4) reject a proposal. Upon acceptance of a proposal, the track chairs will be notified of their responsibilities in managing the affairs of their track; as such responsibilities are defined by both the ACM and SAC conference rules. The Committee reserves the rights to cancel a track at any time if these responsibilities are not addressed adequately by the track chair(s).
