Please forward among your colleagues and networks … Call for Papers Histories of Computing in Eastern Europe IFIP Working Group 9.7 Part of the 24th IFIP World Congress Poznan University of Technology, Poland 19-21 September 2018 The conference committee has begun to review papers for our history of computing workshop at the next IFIP World Computing Congress, which will be held in Poznan, Poland. Draft papers may be submitted any time before June 15. IFIP’s Working Group 9.7, which is dedicated to international histories of computing, is sponsoring a series of papers on 19-21 September as part of the next IFIP World Congress. Given the World Congress’s location, we are particularly interested in histories that reflect computing and informatics in eastern Europe. Academic historians and lovers of history, computing and informatics professionals, archivists, museum curators, and others are welcome to submit papers. More information about the workshop is available on the working group website (http://ifipwg97.org) As has been the working group's past practice, we request submission of draft papers for consideration. Accepted papers will be revised based on comments from reviewers and be distributed to participants before the workshop to ensure a lively conversation. After the workshop, authors will have the chance to incorporate feedback from the audience before submitting their final papers for consideration in the edited volume of selected papers for the proceedings, which will be published by Springer as a volume in the IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology (IFIP-AICT) series. In order to participate, please submit a draft of your paper via the Springer Online Conference Service. The OCS portal for this workshop is available at https://ocs.springer.com/ocs/home/HCEE2018. I am especially enthusiastic as these include a strong focus on developing _critical_ perspectives and approaches. These are much needed, in my view, as both vital counters to tendencies towards techno-optimism and uncritical embrace of corporate-driven agendas, and, more positively, as contributing to rapidly developing frameworks for ICT design that are more squarely focused on human needs and interests for good and sustainable lives of flourishing. Last but not least: I don't think it is possible, even for me, to overstate the quality and fruitfulness of life and work at the Department and in Norway: the possibilities and opportunities for thriving here are simply exceptional. cases in which data-driven decision-making went awry

I apologize in advance that this is an imperfectly phrased query. In short, I'm looking for literature about terrible data governance and related issues. Basically, what happens when there are errors in automated data systems, how those errors might have occurred, and what institutions do (or don't) when they discover those errors. Ideally, cases would describe the technical bits as well as the human choices made. Another way to say it is that my colleagues and I are looking for investigations into data-driven decision-making gone awry. I've read Kathy O'Neill's Weapons of Math Destruction, which was excellent, and now I'm looking for more specific cases, if they exist. Thanks, Sheryl Grant

InnoITeam - a new Center of Excellence in IoT Science and Technology

Dear Colleagues, We are excited to introduce you a new initiative a Center of Excellence in IoT Science and Technology (InnoITeam). The CoE will leverage the knowledge, experience, and resources of three Lithuania institutions – Kaunas University of Technology, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and State Enterprise Centre of Registers of Lithuania - with the support of two advanced EU partners from Sweden – Linköping University and Interactive Institute Swedish ICT in Norrköping. During the first five years, the Consortium will focus on four R&D topics: 1. User interfacing and interaction design approaches for Smart Environments based on IoT. 2. Cybersecurity aspects of the Smart Environments based on IoT. 3. Data analysis and visualization approaches for data-intensive IoT environments. 4. Cognitive IoT technologies for Smart Home Environments. The InnoITeam project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and coordinated by the Kaunas University of Technology. The project has been already started in September (2017) and is finishing its first phase. During the second phase in a five-year period, the InnoITeam is planning to become a self-sustaining organization, integrating and supporting research excellence and innovation development in Lithuania, the Baltic Sea region, and Europe. Internet research case study.

Fellow AIR list members, Those of you interested in the power of the internet as a modern research resource may wish to read a couple of new papers. Recently the writing system of a Medieval manuscript known as MS408 was revealed to be proto-Romance: i.e. the origin of the Romance languages. In addition, it is written with a proto-Italic alphabet. It is the only known document of this kind and therefore has considerable linguistic value. Two papers have been issued, which explain the writing system and translate a number of excerpts as examples. They can be freely downloaded from the preprint website LingBuzz. 1. Also, various dedicated linguistics websites enabled searches for obscure words and terms. The manuscript revealed that the language is a simplified form of spoken Latin, with various foreign and local words introduced to the mix. In addition, the alphabet is phonetically based, but uses symbols from various points of origin. To all intents and purposes, the writing system would appear to be a constructed language, as it seems to have been used only within the region of the Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Italy and subsequently became absorbed into the evolution of the modern Romance languages It seems that the language came about rapidly due to trade, slavery, migration, royal marriage and exchange of ideas between many and various cultures, as a means of common communication: a lingua franca. Thus, it was collectively constructed due to socio-ecological pressures in the Mediterranean, which was the hub of Occidental civilisation at the time. Nearby Naples was the most important port city in the region. Having been constructed, it then became the template for the modern Romance languages, which evolved when the political map caused populations to become relatively isolated during the Renaissance.
