We are recruiting 2 post-doc RAs at King’s College London to work on the 3-year EPSRC-funded project “DADD: Discovering and Attesting Digital Discrimination”. Digital discrimination can be the result of algorithmic biases, i.e., the way in which a particular algorithm has been designed creates discriminatory outcomes, but it also occurs using non-biased algorithms when they are fed or trained with biased data. Research has been conducted on quantifying and limiting the extent of bias introduced by an algorithm or dataset. But, how much bias is too much? That is, what is legal, ethical and/or socially-acceptable? And even more importantly, how do we translate those legal, ethical, or social expectations into automated methods that attest digital discrimination in datasets and algorithms? DADD is a novel cross-disciplinary collaboration to address these open research questions following a co-creation process with academic (Computer Science, Digital Humanities, Law and Ethics) and non-academic partners (Google, AI Club), and the general public. DADD will design methods to certify whether or not datasets and algorithms discriminate by automatically verifying computational non-discrimination norms, which will in turn be formalised based on socio-economic, cultural, legal, and ethical dimensions. The employment contract will include a trial period of six months. If measured according to conventional parameters, freedom of speech and expression in Russia has deteriorated. However, such development is not uncontested and without contradictions. Instead, actions and measures taken can prove inefficient or have unintended outcomes, which can be either negative or positive in terms of freedom of speech. Likewise, freedom of speech can also unintentionally shrink due to reasons such as the strained economic situation or increasing commercialization. To formulate a fuller picture of freedom of speech in Russia today, it is therefore not enough to study measures of control and questions of implementation, but also to adopt the opposite perspective – that is, to study freedom of speech and expression from the perspective of the areas of relative freedom. *Call for Papers - (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age – Journal Interações* The influence of new technologies in public and private spheres of society, rather than a reformulation, has given rise to a new social field and directly interferes with how we perceive the world, relate to it and others. In Pierre Bourdieu's (2001) theory, field arises as a configuration of socially distributed relations. Progressively, a universe of socialisation has emerged and consolidated: cyberspace. Although virtual, it exists and produces effects. It can be defined as the space boosted by the different digital communication platforms and assumes itself as an individual communication model, allowing the receiver to be simultaneously emitter. Space of flows (Castells, 1996), cyberspace translates the social dimension of the Internet enabling the diffusion of communication/information on a global scale. This causes an intense process of inclusion and exclusion of people in the network. The reference to info-inclusive and info-excluded societies of the digital scenario is imperative when it is reflected in the geography of the new socio-technological spaces. The dynamics of these territories are directly associated with the way social, demographic, economic and technological variables condition each other, revealing the potential for dissemination of information and knowledge through technologies. In this special issue of the journal Interações we propose a reflection on (In)Equalities and Social (In)Visibilities in the Digital Age. Unpublished works that present research results and/or theoretical reflection on this theme are accepted (although this special issue is not limited to these topics): - Digital and social and economic inequalities in different geographical contexts; - Promoting equality by digital; - Visibilities and social invisible created by movements of exclusion or social inclusion, digital, media, economic, etc.; - Invisible social groups in the digital age; - Digital literacy and vulnerable social groups; - Digital as a geographical barrier; - Conditioning created by technology to the individual in a social context. While trust in a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned by e.g. transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. The variety of those challenges also results from the number and diversity of stakeholders involved in health systems. Taking the patient's perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prioritized concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Finally, health care providers, insurance providers, and clinics are interested in other aspects, e.g. success rates, study results, and financial benefits of the new systems. This workshop goes deeper into the discussions started at the two prior workshops and works towards further development of the research topics in Health Recommender Systems. CALL FOR PAPERS/ABSTRACTS EXTENDED SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 24TH MAY 2018 13th IFIP Summer School 2018 on Privacy and Identity Management - Fairness, Accountability and Transparency in the Age of Big Data - Vienna, Austria, 20-24 August 2018 https://www.ifip-summerschool.org/ Background and goals We are inviting contributions to this IFIP Summer School on Privacy and Identity Management from students who are at the stage of preparing a master or a PhD thesis as well as young researchers and practitioners. The school is interactive in character, and is composed of plenary lectures and workshops based around Master/PhD students’ presentations. The principle is to encourage young academic and industry entrants to the privacy and identity management world to share their own ideas, build up a collegial relationship with others, gain experience in making presentations, and potentially publish a paper through the resulting book proceedings. This Summer School is a joint effort between the IFIP Working Groups 9.2, 9.6/11.7, 11.6, and Special Interest Group 9.2.2, of different European and national projects. The 2018 IFIP Summer School will bring together junior and senior researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines to discuss important questions concerning privacy and identity management and related issues in a global environment subject to change. This Summer School is not a “taught course”: it does enable, however, students to gain credit points for presenting and attending, and their paper to be considered as a candidate for a Best Paper award. Basic elements The Summer School takes a holistic approach to society and technology and supports interdisciplinary exchange through keynote and plenary lectures, tutorials, workshops, and research paper presentations. In particular, participants’ contributions that combine technical, legal, regulatory, socio-economic, social or societal, political, ethical, anthropological, philosophical, historical, or psychological perspectives are welcome. The interdisciplinary character of the work is fundamental to the School. The research paper presentations and the workshops focus on involving students, and on encouraging the publication of high-quality, thorough, research papers by students/young researchers. To this end, the School has a three-phase review process for submitted papers. In the first phase, submissions are short abstracts as a minimum (full papers are possible). Submissions within the scope of the call are selected for presentation at the School. For accepted submissions the full papers are to be submitted latest before the Summer School takes place and they appear in the (unreviewed) pre-proceedings. In a second review phase, the full papers are reviewed soon after the Summer School. The students are invited to resubmit their full papers, after they have revised them based on two sets of feedback: the discussions that took place at the Summer School, as well as a formal written review by programme committee members. In the third review phase, after the full papers are resubmitted, they are reviewed again for inclusion in the School’s proceedings which will be published by Springer. Submissions by senior researchers and participants in European, national, or regional/community research projects are also very welcome, and are generally published in a separate section of the book volume. Submitting papers / abstracts The abstract submissions should contain a concise problem statement, an outline, and clear messages (they should not be about work ‘to be done’). On acceptance of the abstract, authors are to submit their full papers of up to 16 pages in length in Springer LNCS format. These versions of the papers will be made available to all participants in the Summer School pre-proceedings. After the Summer School, authors will have the opportunity to revise and re-submit their full papers (again in Springer LNCS format, with a maximum of 16 pages). These versions should address the questions and discussions raised on the paper during the Summer School as well as in the detailed reviews provided by the Programme Committee members. These revised papers will be considered for publication in the Summer School proceedings published by Springer, the official IFIP publisher. The papers to be included in the final proceedings will again be reviewed and finally selected by the Summer School Programme Committee. Students are expected to try to publish their work in this volume. Call for Tutorials and Workshops The School also seeks contributions in the form of tutorials and workshop proposals from all disciplines (e.g. computer science, informatics, economics, ethics, law, psychology, sociology, history, political and other social sciences, surveillance studies, business and public management). The timelines for submission of these tutorials and workshops are the same as those of the student papers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: concepts, technologies and applications, design, enforcement mechanisms, effects, attitudes, and user practices. Tutorials are expected to last one or two hours. Proposals should contain a short summary and state the level and background required for attendees to follow the tutorial. Workshops are expected to last one or two hours and must generate short papers that recapitulate the outcome and the kinds of discussions raised in the School, for inclusion in the post-proceedings. Proposals should contain a short statement summarising the topic(s) to be discussed and the expected contributions from the audience members e.g. responding to a questionnaire or conducting a small experiment. Proposers should indicate whether any special equipment is needed for the workshop, such as audiovisual systems or computational equipment and support.
