Call for Submissions: “Family and the Media: Cultural Politics and Public Narratives” Special June 2019 Issue of The International Journal of Media & Cultural Politics edited by Andrea Carosso, Tetiana Havlin and Eva-Sabine Zehelein Deadline for submission of abstracts (500 words, add 200 words bio) or, if possible, full articles (8,000 words): June 15, 2018 Notification of acceptance: July 15, 2018 Final deadline for submission of full article: October 30, 2018 All articles undergo a double blind peer review process. Family as a form of social coexistence is widespread in political, cultural and media debates; cultural politics with respect to family can stir elections, fill media content, sell products and (re)construct socio-cultural and -political discourses. The presentation of families in the media is contextual, culturally encoded and socially determined in accordance with or opposition to predominant cultural politics and political ideologies. The International Journal of Media and Culture (The IJMCP) invites contributions to the June 2019 special issue dedicated to “Family and the Media: Cultural Politics and Public Narratives.” The focus of this issue is on the analysis of (re)representations of family matters in diverse media. We ask: How and with which effect are family/families constructed/reflected in cultural politics and public narratives, in media as diverse as TV-series and film, (print) journalism and photography, blogs and microblogs (Twitter), social media apps (Snapchat or Instagram), radio and podcasts, or computer games? How do these media narratives construct, shape and/or influence public (political) discourses? We employ a very broad understanding of “family” – one that includes yet goes well beyond the culturally and discursively enshrined “nuclear family” paradigm: e.g. heteronormative as well as homonormative families, pluripaternal and monopaternal families, patchwork networks, “dysfunctional” families; families based on genetic bonds or emotional belonging. The successful candidate will have the academic credentials required for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. Salary will be negotiable, according to qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate will be a recognized expert in the relationship between media, technology, and democracy. In particular, the candidate will have a deep understanding of how our evolving technological infrastructure -- including digital platforms, advertising technologies, and artificial intelligence -- are driving changes in both the journalism and the broader media ecosystem. The holder of the Chair will also be actively engaged in the policy process, with an appreciation for how the relevant policies are developed, promoted, and implemented. The candidate will have an appreciation for the value of public scholarship in this area, and how it can both supplement peer-reviewed work and enhance the realm of policy making. Capacity to communicate in French is considered a definite asset. The successful candidate will report to the Director of the Max Bell School of Public Policy and will contribute to the academic activities of the School, especially the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program. And yet analyses and applications of those same data can do real harm. Algorithms used for setting bail can perpetuate racial biases. Calculations employed to improve the efficiency of postal delivery may divert already-scarce resources away from impoverished areas. Enhancing political engagement on social media platforms can promote misinformation, polarization, and distrust. And the list-unfortunately-goes on. How can we maximize the effectiveness of, and minimize potential harms resulting from, the use of data in contemporary democracies? One important answer is to bring more social science into our data practices. Social science perspectives permit a deeper understanding of the social and political processes that generate data-allowing us to more critically unpack what the data represent. And social science research can tell us a great deal about the likely effects of various applications resulting from data analysis. With this in mind, the Data in Democracy Summer School will bring together a select group of practitioners and academics for five days to learn about and apply crucial insights from the social sciences concerning the forms, functions, and impacts of data in democratic societies. Participants will receive a series of lectures with built-in practical exercises, engage in social and networking activities, and, on the final day, take part in a "hackathon" that capitalizes on participants' diverse backgrounds and experiences as they work together on a problem using real-world data. Interaction between users and computers occurs at the User Interface (UI). Now, computers become pervasive, they are embedded in everyday things and UIs are the main value-added competitive advantages. UIs should be more natural for users. NUI (natural user interface) expands forms beyond formal input devices like the mouse and keyboard to more and more natural forms of interaction such as touch, speech, gestures, handwriting, and vision. Unlike speech, handwriting and vision, which have been researched for decades and put into practical use recently, touch and gestures are interaction tasks related, and yet lack of study. This talk will introduce methods of modeling user input action based on data with the random noise for fast touch input and natural gestures. - Robots that listen to people's hearts: the role of emotions in the communication between humans and social robots, by Prof. Ana Paiva, University of Lisbon, Portugal - Running Recommendations: Personalisation Opportunities for Health & Fitness by Prof. Barry Smyth, University College Dublin, Ireland Abstract: The history of personalisation and recommender systems is, in large part, a web-tale: a story of sites and services that learn about users, in order to provide more tailored experiences. The rapid rise of mobile computing, combined with wearable sensors, and an increasingly connected IoT world, has begun to shift the potential for personalisation, from the virtual world of the web, to the physical world in which we live, work, and play. This talk will consider exciting new application opportunities for user modelling, personalisation, and recommendation in the area of personal health and fitness, with a particular emphasis on how these technologies can help people to exercise more effectively, and by drawing from recent results for marathon runners.

Hi Kat Nili Steinfeld and myself just publised a piece in Social Science Computer Review analyzing activity in Facebook groups dedicated to "miscarriage of justice" campaigns calling for justice for (arguably) innocent people who were wrongly convicted. Social media constitute useful and effective platforms for miscarriage of justice campaigners to challenge state authorities and decisions taken by the criminal justice system. To characterize such endeavors, this study analyzes the activity in such a major group dedicated to the murder case of Tair Rada and the trial of Roman Zadorov, one of the most controversial legal cases in Israel’s history. Using digital data extraction and linguistic analysis tools, we focus on five themes: (1) the central role of group administrators in directing the discourse and setting the group agenda; (2) correspondence of group activity with off-line events and mainstream media coverage; (3) skewed distribution of post publications per user and engagement measures per post; (4) prominent topics in group discussions, revolving around key figures, institutions and officials, making justice, considering alternative theories and examining investigative and forensic materials; and (5) the framing of key figures, institutions, and values in portraying a somewhat dichotomous image of a corrupted justice system, an innocent man wrongly convicted and a Facebook group in the search for the truth. Dear All, the Bavarian Ministry of Science and the Arts is going to fund five new junior research group leaders for young postdocs (requirement: excellent PhD degree, "excellent achievements in research and teaching, based on an excellent publication record (quality and originality), awards and honours, third party funding, collaborations, etc.") to establish an independent research group working on "innovative projects with high practical impact" in the wider field of digitalisation research (see link). Interested candidates have to apply for funding via a university in Bavaria.
