Towards an Ethics of Community Management: SWARM Research Symposium 2-5pm Friday 31st August 2018, The Dream Factory, Melbourne, Australia Over the past two years, the role of social media and online communities has come under increased scrutiny. Whether this be about the implications of interface and algorithmic design, the toxicity of communities, the spread of false information, or the use of psychographic data to micro-target individuals, it has become clear that we need to reconsider the public responsibility of social media platforms. This includes imagining new and more ethical approaches to effective online community management. The Swarm Research Symposium, hosted by the Media and Communications Program at the University of Melbourne, is designed to bring together academic and industry thinkers to exchange ideas and research on the topic of ethical community management. The symposium will be capped off with a keynote presentation from Associate Professor Tarleton Gillespie<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/people/tarleton/>, currently Principal Researcher at Microsoft in the Social Media Collective<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/group/social-media-collective/>. Professor Gillespie will talk on his new book: Custodians of the Internet: Platforms, content moderation and the hidden decisions that shape social media. We invite academics and practitioners to submit 2-400 word abstracts for papers on the symposium theme: ‘Towards an Ethics of Community Management’. Specific areas of interest include: * Humane technology design * Measures for establishing healthy online communities * The processes of online content management * The power of platforms and algorithms in shaping online community * Human, automatic and AI-based moderation and management processes * The ethics of algorithms, including gender, racial and political bias * Inclusion and diversity in online communities There is no registration fee for the research symposium. Hi Fran, NVivo might still do the trick if you can shrink the size of your population. Depending on the questions you are trying to answer with the content analysis, perhaps you can find a way to collapse some of these 250,000 tweets into a smaller set and then sample from the resulting subpopulation(s). (My hunch is that you may not need to load up every single message to get a robust account of the discourse.) Without knowing the details of your sample, here are some questions that have helped me to reduce my sample in the past: - Are all of the tweets "original" or are some of them "retweets"? Can you analyze retweets separately from original messages? - Are there other redundant or duplicate messages in your corpus? Automatically generated messages sometimes follow patterns that are (relatively) easy to spot. For example, a weather bot or a news aggregator might spit out an update every 60 minutes. Is it necessary to code everyone one? - Can you group the tweets around certain URLs or meaningful phrases or @-mentions and then treat these groups as single cases? Ideally, these preliminary/exploratory analyses will reduce the size of the corpus without sacrificing the validity of your sample. I hope this is helpful. Please do let us know what you find! Pressure groups and influence on Twitter

Hi members I am currently supervising a PhD student who is examining how pressure groups like NPOs get their talking points into the mainstream media and public domain through using social media, especially Twitter. I was hoping members could provide some guidelines on useful literature to frame this discussion. The student is looking at public spheres and networked publics, but this seems not to engage sufficiently with the idea of actively strategizing around constructing messages to be taken up by the public. I was hoping there is literature that takes theories of agenda setting and influence/persuasion into the social media realm. I will really appreciate your suggestions.
