Reminder Call for Papers: The International Symposium on Media Innovations 2018 (ISMI18) - Deadline 31 May Theme: Media Innovations and Good Lives Dear list members, we are pleased to announce that the seventh International Symposium on Media Innovations (ISMI18) will take place in Oslo, Norway on Friday 31st August and Saturday 1st September, 2018. Join us, along with a small group of international academic researchers and industry representatives, to discuss how innovations are developed in, influence, and transform contemporary media. We will discuss innovation and change in media technologies and services, organisational structures and management, and policies. We will also focus on questions relating to media production, journalism, media consumption and use. The theme for ISMI18 is ‘Media Innovations and Good Lives’. During our two-day event we will theorise media innovation and how this may relate, influence, and contribute to, living good lives in contemporary societies. At the same time, we will retain a focus on the presentation and discussion of empirical cases of media innovation in different organisations and contexts. Software or tool for video analysis, forum-scraping

Dear all, I am a PhD candidate in Science, technology, society at UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) as well as the coordinator of a research infrastructure we are putting in place to study the use of digital technologies and medias through thick data approaches. As such, we plan to have a lot of video data - wether on field or at the lab - and we are looking for a software or a tool that would help us analyze this data. Basically, we are looking for something where we could annotate the video (something like NVivo but better suited for video) while integrating other layers of data (ex. the verbatim of the interview), possibly by synchronizing these layers together (if that is possible). We were wondering if such a tool might exist, and if yes, what might be some of your suggestions? We are also planning to have data extracted from social media, web sites or forums. About the forums, we were wondering if there was any tool (like a web-scraper maybe?) that could help us extract publications/conversations automatically through some filters? These technologies include features on social media sites such as Facebook Live, standalone smartphone apps (e.g., Periscope), and websites dedicated to live streaming, such as the gaming platform Twitch.tv. Although live streaming has been possible for many years (e.g. Senft, 2008), the evolution of recording devices, data transfer speeds, mobile apps, and other digital technologies has contributed to a recent proliferation of live media. Live platforms encourage spontaneous sharing but controversial incidents raise questions about what should be shared in a live context. Live streaming game platforms showcase modes of self-presentation and self-promotion (Consalvo & Altizer, 2017), which social media influencers also adopt when broadcasting content to adoring fans (Abidin, 2016). Gamers and influencers alike benefit from the commercialization of these practices, generating revenue from brand promotion and boosting attention to advertisements. Clearly, live streaming and live digital technologies have social, political, economic, and cultural impacts. However, research into these areas is still developing and there have been few opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars researching live streaming. We invite you to tackle these topics with us at this pre-conference workshop, taking place at Concordia University’s cutting-edge Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology. We encourage participation from a range of scholars, from graduate students to early career researchers and established academics. --------------------------- Call for Papers ---------------------------------------------- 2nd International Workshop on Rumours and Deception in Social Media (RDSM) co-located with CIKM 2018 October 22, 2018 in Turin, Italy https://www.pheme.eu/rdsm2018/ **Submission Deadline: 15th July, 2018** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ AIMS AND SCOPE -------------------------- The 2nd edition of the RDSM workshop will particularly focus on online information disorder and its interplay with public opinion formation. Information disorder has been categorised into three types: (1) misinformation, an honest mistake in information sharing, (2) disinformation, deliberate spreading of inaccurate information, and (3) malinformation, accurate information that is intended to harm others, such as leaks. The spread of this information can play an important role in shaping public opinion, as well as the formation of public opinion can feed back into the production and sharing of information disorder. The challenges posed by online information disorder and its ability to shape public opinion has evoked the occurrence of important political phenomena of worldwide impact in recent events. This is the case of recent political events such as Brexit and Trump’s election, where social media played a significant role in shaping public opinion and issues now known as “fake news” and “post-truth” had an impact that is yet to be understood. It is a fact that social media is an excellent resource of mining all kind of information varying from opinions to actual facts. However, it is also fact that not all pieces of information are reliable and thus their truth is highly questionable. One such category of information types are rumours where the veracity level is not known at the time of posting. Although rumours can be true many of them are classified as false and such false rumours are a powerful tool used to manipulate public opinion. It is therefore very important to detect and verify false rumours before they are spread and influence the public opinion. In this workshop the aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in social media mining and analysis to deal with the emerging issues of rumour veracity assessment and manipulation of public opinion. These challenges have been affecting the way in which citizens, the media and political elites communicate about politics. Critical observers witness a deteriorating quality of political conversations between ordinary citizens. It appears no longer possible to discuss politics normally. A high-choice media environment facilitated by online and in particular social media enables citizens to refrain from exposing themselves to counter-attitudinal information and engaging in cross-cutting political talk. The polarization of opinions within society is promoted by increasingly fragmented media systems and a reporting style that favors sensational and scandalous over a balanced and multifaceted reporting. Rapid media cycles shorten time for balanced and thorough argumentation and media outlets are steadily confronted with the accusation of producing fake news. Political actors adapt to the media logic by employing ever more simplified and emotionally arousing communication. Instead of deliberating publicly on complex problems and finding compromises or solutions, political elites rather prefer to communicate through short soundbites and populist messages to promote their positions and eventually attract voters at election time. Overall, these dynamics indicate a deteriorating deliberative quality of political communication among and between citizens, the media and political elites. While this phenomenon has caused concern among scholars from both political and communication science, it still needs further empirical substantiation and demand a reflection on extant theories. This conference aims at addressing the deliberative quality of communication among and between citizens, media and political elites. Within this research context, we welcome both theoretical, empirical and methodological contributions focusing on the deliberative quality of communication. The proposals can address – but are not limited – to the following questions: * To which extent does ordinary citizens’ talk about politics come close to the genuine type of deliberation? Who participates in political talk, who does not and why? Do citizens talk to those with viewpoints that conflict with their own? What are the underlying motives and condition that give rise to homogenous or heterogeneous talk about politics? Which variables affect the quality of informal civic discussions? Do citizens’ daily exchanges resemble reasoned and well-argued debates or harsh fights at the expense of proper justification? * To which extent does the online sphere of political communication promote respectively impede deliberation? Are platform interventions (e.g., Facebook’s proposed policy of removing hate speech and fake news) a panacea to improve the quality of online deliberation and to save deliberative democracy? * To which extent do different features of the media systems influence mediated deliberation? How does the increased polarization and fragmentation of media environments translate into the deliberative quality of the media? How deliberative is the media system as a whole? How deliberative are individual media types, formats, or programs? * How do political, national and cultural climates shape deliberation? To which extent do different types of the political system affect the deliberative quality within the public sphere? How does the increased polarization of the political environments affect formal deliberation? How do political elites engage with populist actors who decline to engage in reasoned and constructive dialogue? * Which opportunities and challenges do big data offer for the analysis of deliberation? What are the methodological challenges and pitfalls when measuring deliberation? To which extent, and if so how, may computational methods help in identifying the criteria for deliberation? A committee composed of communication and political science experts in deliberation will review each abstract. Only one proposal per first author can be accepted. Dear friends, We invite you to volunteer to serve on our Program Committee for ICTD 2019 (to be held January 4th-7th in Ahmedabad, India). If selected (based on the spots we have open at present), we will rely on your expertise to ensure that the submissions selected for publication are high quality and guarantee an inclusive, impactful, and interdisciplinarily rich conference. **Please fill out this very short form, if interested: https://goo.gl/forms/bM8vkOjmANpnEfMk1.** Below, we offer (1) a quick introduction to ICTD 2019, (2) important dates for reviewing, and (3) a description of what makes an ICTD Paper/Poster. What is ICTD 2019? Held in cooperation with ACM SIGCAS, ICTD 2019 will provide an international forum for scholarly researchers to explore the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in social, political, and economic development. The ICTD conferences have been taking place every 12-18 months since 2006. The first ICTD conference was organized in 2006 at UC Berkeley and the conference has since been hosted in Bangalore (2007), Doha (2009), London (2010), Atlanta (2012), Cape Town (2013), Singapore (2015), Ann Arbor (2016), and Lahore (2017). The ICTD community is methodologically and conceptually diverse, including, for example, anthropologists who study how underserved individuals and communities engage with technology, computer scientists who design novel technological interventions to target development outcomes, data scientists who examine human-centered aspects of big data, political scientists looking at how national and state governments implement ICTD projects, economists who evaluate the developmental impact of such projects, and practitioners who implement them on the ground. What does the ICTD 2019 review process entail? As a member of the ICTD 2019 Program Committee, you can expect to complete reviews no more than five Papers and three Posters (we hope). Reviewing will take place between July 22nd and August 22nd (approximately). You will not be required to participate in a PC meeting or conduct any meta-reviews. What is an ICTD Paper? An ICTD Paper, 7-10 pages in the ACM two-column format (excluding references, but including figures and tables), must make a new research contribution and provide complete and substantial support for its results and conclusions. Accepted Papers will be presented orally at the conference and archived in the ACM Digital Library (unless otherwise requested by authors). Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of novelty of the research contribution, significance of the contribution to ICTD, validity of method, rigor of analysis, and clarity of presentation. What is an ICTD Poster? An ICTD Poster, up to 4 pages in the ACM two-column format (excluding references, but including figures and tables), can report on practitioner projects, research work in progress, dissertation progress, and other content that would enrich the conference. A complete research contribution is not mandatory. Posters will be reviewed in the same timeline as (but differently than) Full Papers. Accepted Posters will be presented as posters at the conference and archived in the ACM Digital Library (unless otherwise requested by authors). Submissions will be lightly reviewed, but required to meet most of the criteria mentioned above for Papers. The deadline to fill out this form is **Friday, June 1, 2018**. SAGE Research cases help student and novice researchers learn the *why* and *how* of research design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation. Would you like to contribute meaningful stories of the inquiry process for inclusion in this important collection? SAGE Publishing invites AO IR members to submit original case studies on research methods. SAGE particularly welcomes case studies reflecting on the dilemmas researchers have encountered when studying ethical concerns, contentious or sensitive social issues. At this time, the priority is on cases in business and management, and politics and international relations. However, cases in any social science discipline will be considered. SAGE Research Methods Cases are pedagogically-oriented pieces reaching students and researchers at more than 300 institutions worldwide. Successful case studies are methods-focused reflections on the experiences, challenges, and decisions involved with designing and conducting a specific research project. Case study submissions are peer reviewed, and successful authors will receive one year of access to the entire online Cases collection.
