They are 21st century media forms: recording, representing and acting, often in real-time. This project investigates the impact of living with autonomous and intelligent media technologies. It explores the changing situation of media and communication studies in this expanded field. How do these media technologies refigure relations between people and the world? What policy challenges do they present? How do they include and exclude marginalized peoples? How are they transforming media and communications themselves? Innovative qualitative and digital methods will be used to identify connections across community, policy and technology perspectives on ‘big data’. The project is expected to deepen social engagement with disadvantaged communities, and strengthen global impact in promoting social justice in a datafied world. In the two previous workshops on Health Recommender Systems (HRS), we elaborated a great variety of fields in which recommender systems can improve our awareness, understanding and behavior regarding our own, and the general public's health. At the same time, these application areas bring new challenges into the recommender community. Recommendations that influence the health status of a patient need to be liable, today, they often involve a human in the loop to make sure the recommendations are sound. To make the recommender liable, complex domain-specific user models need to be created, which creates privacy issues. While trust in a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned by e.g. transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. The variety of those challenges also results from the number and diversity of stakeholders involved in health systems. Taking the patient's perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prioritized concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Finally, health care providers, insurance providers, and clinics are interested in other aspects, e.g. success rates, study results, and financial benefits of the new systems. This workshop goes deeper into the discussions started at the two prior workshops and works towards the further development of the research topics in Health Recommender Systems. Two positions in the Department of Communication College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Cornell University Geri Gay Professorship in Communication and Open-Rank Tenure-Track Position in Communication and Technology The Department of Communication at Cornell University invites applications for two 9-month, tenure-track positions focusing on communication technologies and digital media: (1) the inaugural Geri Gay Professor of Communication at the Associate or Full Professor rank; and (2) an open-rank position to further build and strengthen our communication and technology area. We welcome applications from scholars in the social sciences whose research addresses the most important questions about the impacts of myriad technologies on individuals, groups, and society. We are particularly interested in applicants who explore one or more of these areas and approaches: a) the public sphere, including policy, politics, news, health, legal, and global issues; b) cutting-edge technologies of any kind; c) innovative research methods and tools; d) social interactions, uses, and effects on social media and mobile technologies; e) computer-supported collaborative work; and f) human-computer interaction (HCI) and design. For the inaugural Geri Gay Professorship, we especially welcome senior-rank candidates whose interests will intersect with colleagues at the Cornell Tech campus in New York City. Call for Papers Digital Culture Meets Data: Critical Perspectives Special Issue of Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies Guest Editors: Aristea Fotopoulou (University of Brighton) and Helen Thornham (University of Leeds) Algorithms and big data shape our sociocultural and technical relations and our everyday experiences. Considerations of data, algorithms and infrastructure are now central to our critical perspectives on, and approaches to digital culture. The ‘data logical turn’ has been talked about as a necessary critical consideration for digital culture, not least because communication, media infrastructures, practices and social environments become increasingly ‘datafied'. But what does this turn to data mean for our research, scholarship and pedagogic practice? What does it mean for broader epistemological and ontological frameworks? Has the data paradigm arrived as an unquestionable unifying concept for studies of digital culture and digital media, communication, technology? It may be that a shift of focus on algorithms and data is fundamentally disruptive to the ways in which we see our research and disciplines. It may even appear to limit the theoretical and methodological tools through which we increasingly try to understand mediation, the formation of identity, social life, politics and the creative industries. To others, the data logical turn may be plainly repeating the processes of earlier instances of technological innovation. And for some, it may provide an opportunity to frame new theoretical concepts and methodological tools for a whole new set of social, cultural and political phenomena. The focus of this special issue emerges from the ECREA conference of late 2017 and is motivated by conceptual and critical questions about the relationship between digital culture and data. We ask: What theoretical and empirical perspectives on data and digital culture can be used to augment and diversify our research and educational approaches? How might we challenge data paradigms or aim to show alternative or complementary ways to address digital culture and communication? We invite contributions that critically engage with digital culture and data specifically in relation to research, scholarship and pedagogic practice.
