--- Call For YECREA Representatives --- Please circulate to early-career scholars. The YECREA network (Young Scholars Network of the European Communication Research and Education Association) is calling for early-career communication researchers across Europe to apply for six vacant positions as YECREA representatives. The vacant positions are in the following sections/TWGs: 1. Communication Law and Policy 2. Digital Games Research 3. Health Communication (TWG) 4. Media & The City (TWG) 5. Philosophy of Communication 6. Science and Environment Communication Deadline for application: 15 February 2019 The young scholar (YECREA) representative in each section/TWG assists the managing team (consisting of a chair and two vice-chairs) in organising panels, symposiums and/or conferences, promoting the specific research area. Furthermore, the YECREA representative works to inform early-career scholars about events in the field and take part in organising events, such as pre-conference workshops or meetings. The 'young' in young scholar is not a measure of age, but of career progression. Thus, all scholars in non-tenure positions (e.g. PhD's and postdocs) are welcome to apply, Applications should be no more than 500 words and contain the following information: - A heading with your name and the specific position you are applying for - Details on your current university, position and progression - A brief description of your research - A brief statement on your work's connection to the specific section or TWG - A brief statement on your aspirations for improving early-career research The managing team of YECREA (Corinna Lauerer, Norbert Šinković and Johan Farkas) will evaluate applications. The Research Centre for Multilingual Practices and Language Learning in Society (MULTIPLES) at Ghent University, invites applications for a full-time position as doctoral researcher. The PhD student will be working on the project “ Representations of intra-EU mobility and extra-EU migration in new media and in their readers' comments, in the context of Brexit”. *Project description* The research is situated in the domain of media communication, discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. The media are considered partly to blame for the Brexit vote, not least because of their biased coverage of migration during the campaign. The project addresses this issue from two angles. Firstly, while most analyses of media coverage still focus on broadsheets vs. tabloids, increasingly popular Internet-only media fall within any of these two categories and remain particularly understudied. Therefore, the project seeks to identify digital-only practices in news-making, particularly regarding mobility in the Brexit context. Secondly, the ‘refugee crisis’ has resulted in fears of the extra-European ‘other’ but intra-European mobility is also instilling fears that undermine one of the very pillars of the EU, namely freedom of movement. Contrary to research to date which focuses on extra-EU migration, this project will analyze the media discourses regarding intra- and extra-EU mobilities, as well as the reactions these discourses trigger in readers’ comments. The news articles published by Buzzfeed UK, The Huffington Post UK and The Guardian are the subjects of the study, together with the comments posted by their readers. The positions begin Spring or Fall 2019 (January or August). Some of these positions will have teaching and/or administrative responsibilities in the computer science program to be offered at The Universities at Shady Grove, in Montgomery County, Maryland. For the position of Lecturer, the preferred qualification is a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related discipline. Applicants for the Professor of the Practice or Visiting Assistant Professor positions should have completed or be about to complete a doctoral degree in computer science or closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will have evidence of strong organizational skills. Experience in academia, industry and government will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a demonstrated commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply. The Lecturer and Professor of the Practice (PoP) positions are renewable. Lecturers and PoPs teach a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. They advise students, mentor teaching assistants, and help shape departmental practices and policies. Lecturers and PoPs are expected to continue their professional growth. Lecturers have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer. PoPs are expected to provide leadership in the administration of the department. The position of Visiting Assistant Professor is a short-term appointment that is appropriate for new and recent PhDs who would like to bolster their teaching and research profiles before applying to a permanent position. The CSEE department is large and growing, with a diverse community of approximately 2,000 undergraduate majors in computer science and computer engineering. Professors of the Practice, along with Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty, are the driving force behind the department’s broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. CSEE faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology to increase the diversity of those who create technology, with programs designed for women in computing and engineering, transfer students from underrepresented groups, and diverse students interested in cybersecurity. In addition to our undergraduate programs, the department has graduate programs in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, cybersecurity and data science. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the university.
