With the growing ubiquity of information and information-based tools and services, privacy has become both a resource and a currency in social, cultural, political, and economic interactions. Yet, the conceptualization of privacy itself is still at the heart of the scholarly debate, especially when viewed from a global, comparative perspective. Conceptions of privacy hold deep, cultural underpinnings, yet these dimensions are often underexplored in research that focuses on how privacy is valued, measured, and enacted. Likewise, researchers are seeking for guidance in order to engage with digital data while at the same time respecting privacy needs of persons involved in their studies. This conceptual plurality, coupled with socio-technical developments, makes comparative privacy research particularly challenging, despite its importance. We invite you to engage with this challenge. Drawing on conversations and collaborations forged at ICA and in several local and regional research projects around the globe, this post-conference aims to attend to privacy's cultural aesthetic, by bringing together scholars conducting research that examines cultural, political, and/or geographic aspects of privacy. The ultimate goal is to start a conversation within our discipline about the ways in which systematic comparative cross-cultural analyses of privacy might be conceptualized, theorized, and operationalized in ways that are both novel and authentic. We anticipate that the first half of this full day post-conference will be devoted to research presentations submitted through this call. The second half of the post-conference will focus on workshopping a framework for comparative analysis of privacy in broad informational contexts, including social media, health and fitness monitoring, digital literacy, and IoT devices. We will concentrate on articulating basic principles and a core analytical framework to be used by the group for ongoing comparative privacy projects, and building collaborative working groups to facilitate future research. We seek submissions that focus on culturally specific and comparative approaches to the conceptualization and empirical study of privacy. Examples of work that falls under this broad umbrella may include efforts that (a) interrogate the mechanisms that reify or challenge national or cultural practices related to privacy; (b) examine privacy from multi- and cross-cultural perspectives; (c) discuss practical challenges and opportunities of conducting comparative research in the field; or (d) explore theoretical perspectives that might serve as heuristics for the comparative study of privacy across cultural contexts. Submission logistics At this time, we invite two types of submissions. First, we seek abstracts of 500 words (maximum) that describe research and its fit for the post conference. Second, we will also accept proposals for posters (up to 300 words). All submissions should be uploaded to the post-conference submission site no later than 11 February 2019. Dear listserv members, This is to inform you that I organize a panel on emotions and affect in user-based communication at HCI International 2019 in Orlando, Florida, on July 26 to 31, 2019. There are still a couple of places for which I would like to have a more intense competition. If you wish to be invited to submit a paper by February 10, please send me an extended abstract of 500 words in free form (de-anonymized) by January 25 to s.bodrunova(a)spbu.ru. We will invite 6 to 8 papers to submit, with 4 to 5 papers that will remain after the peer-review. The accepted papers will be published in one of the Springer series (Scopus- and DBLP-indexed, among other databases). The conference will take place at Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, a nice place to spend a summer week at. The only disadvantage is comparatively high participation fees, but this is not up to me to decide on them. Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. The Doctoral Consortium is implemented as a student mentoring program that introduces students to senior researchers from the relevant fields. Students are expected to document in a brief submission their doctoral research (see below described submission information for further details), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected for presentation at a Doctoral Consortium Session as part of the conference. Promising, but less well- developed applications will be selected for presentation at a poster session. Each student with an accepted submission will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student's work and will discuss the doctoral research with the student and the audience at the consortium. How to Submit to the Doctoral Consortium To apply for the ACM UMAP 2019 Doctoral Consortium, students are asked to submit a paper presenting their doctoral research that describes: · The problem being addressed. · Motivation outlining the relevance of the problem and referring to related work. · The main contributions that the PhD project aims to achieve. · The progress made to date (including a clear description of the proposed approach, methodology and preliminary results) as well as the plan for further research. · Topics include (but are not limited to) the ACM UMAP 2019 key areas. Each DC submission is encouraged to consider the following: identification of related (state of the art) work, indication of the potential innovation, application or advancement of the state-of-the-art that the work intends to achieve. In addition, as appropriate for the PhD project, the submissions can consider: indication of data to be used for experimentation, indication of implementation approach, indication of evaluation criteria and experimental design. Each submission should contain a cover page including the paper title, name of the PhD candidate, the name of his/her supervisor(s) and University, a paragraph describing the stage they are in the PhD programme, together with a brief description of their background. This will enable the committee to adapt its assistance to each student. This is a call for contributions to the full-day workshop at the *2019 iConference* to be held in Washington, DC, on *Sunday, March 31st, 2019*. In this workshop, we seek to bring together researchers from the information fields broadly construed, along with researchers in related disciplines to showcase the range of areas, practices and methodologies available to research forced migration. The aim is to introduce our information science colleagues to research in related disciplines, as well as acculturate our colleagues from other disciplines into the rich research context and frameworks in information science. The workshop will feature a panel, lightning talks and various engagement sessions. A Special Issue featuring some of the Workshop contributions will also be produced following the event. The following two themes will frame the workshop contributions and discussions: *Information spaces of refugees* -Navigating the information environments in new and/or transitional countries -Operational knowledge about information practices in different contexts -Making space for refugees Evolving services provided by (public) libraries and other information professionals in the context of forced migration *Digitally-mediated environments of refugees* -Information-related skills and strategies that facilitate access to (and uses of) information -Role of social media and online spaces in creating/regaining a sense of place -Access, accessibility, usability issues in forced migration research -Credibility and assessment; multilingual interactions; user-generated content *Abstract Submission* The workshop welcomes submissions for presenting a lightning talk of 15 minutes in one of the main themes of the workshop: Information spaces of refugees and digitally-mediated environments for refugees. Dear colleagues, We would like to invite paper submissions to the IUAES 2019 panel on *"Mediating Travel: Digital Media, Tourism, and the Cosmopolitan Self in a Hyperconnected World"*, co-convened by Regev Nathansohn (Department of Communication, Sapir Academic College) and Christian Ritter (MEDIT, Tallinn University). *Panel title:* Mediating Travel: Digital Media, Tourism, and the Cosmopolitan Self in a Hyperconnected World [Commission on the Anthropology of Tourism] *Short abstract:* Digital media technologies have transformed the relationships between hosts and guests in tourist places. Inviting theoretical and empirical contributions from the global south and north, this panel seeks to gain new understandings of the mutual shaping of cosmopolitan selves and digital media. *Long abstract:* Digital media technologies have profoundly reshaped travel practices and tourist places. The Internet and digital platforms created a new realm of experience within the global tourism industry, transforming the complex relationships between hosts and guests. On the one hand, tourist blogs disseminate travel narratives and visual representations of tourism sites while reconfiguring the manifold tourism imaginaries. On the other hand, tourism organizations adapt to the ubiquitous use of mobile devices in everyday life by circulating more audio-visual content about tourist destinations. In addition to tourism agencies, mobile applications mediate among tourism actors at the global-local nexus. The authenticity of tourism actors, services and objects is increasingly staged on the screens of mobile devices, changing tourism culture in unprecedented ways. From Airbnb to augmented reality apps new possibilities for solidarity between hosts and guests and for the discovery of tourism sites are enabled, and sometimes prevented. Bringing together tourism scholars who ethnographically explore the digitalization of tourism, and digital ethnographers who study the field of tourism, this panel seeks to gain new understandings of the mutual shaping of cosmopolitan selves and digital media. We invite theoretical contributions and empirical case studies on the different roles of digital media in contemporary tourism in the global south and north. Couch Internet Research Award 2019 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research *http://www.cccsir.com/ <http://www.cccsir.com/>* The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. *** THIRD CALL FOR TUTORIAL PROPOSALS *** 27th ACM International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2019) Golden Bay Beach Hotel 5*, Larnaca, Cyprus, June 9-12, 2019 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Proposals due: February 11, 2019 ACM UMAP 2019, the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users, and which collect, represent, and model user information, is pleased to invite proposals for tutorials to be given in conjunction with the conference. Tutorials are intensive instructional sessions aimed to provide a comprehensive introduction to established or emerging research topics of interest for the UMAP community. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · new user modeling technologies, methods, techniques, and trends (e.g. exploiting data mining and big data analytics for user modeling, evaluation methodologies, data visualization, etc.); · user modeling and personalization techniques for specific domains (e.g., health sciences, e-government, e-commerce, cultural heritage, education, internet of things, mobile, music, information retrieval, etc.); · application of user modeling and personalization techniques for information retrieval and recommender systems; · eliciting and learning user preferences by taking into account users' emotional state, physical state, personality, trust, cognitive factors. An ideal tutorial should be broad enough to provide a basic introduction to the chosen area, but it should also cover the most important topics in depth. Tutorial presenters can have one page in the adjunct proceedings. PROPOSAL FORMAT AND SUBMISSION Tutorial proposals should be submitted in PDF format to both tutorial chairs, not exceeding 5 pages and containing the following information: 1. Title and abstract of the tutorial for inclusion on the ACM UMAP 2019 website (200 words maximum). 2. Tutorial description: · learning objectives of the tutorial and relevance to ACM UMAP 2019; · targeted audience (introductory, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisite knowledge or skills; · a brief outline of the tutorial structure; · practical sessions. 3. Tutorial length: full (6 hours) or half day (3 hours). 4. Other venues to which the tutorial or part thereof has been or will be presented, in addition to explaining how the current tutorial differs from the other editions. 5. Name, email address, affiliation and brief professional biography of the tutorial instructor(s), indicating previous training and speaking experience.
