ACM UMAP is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB. The proceedings are published by ACM and will be part of the ACM Digital Library. ACM UMAP covers a wide variety of research areas where personalization and adaptation may be applied. The systems support and complement different types of abilities that are normally unavailable in the context of human-only cognition. Previous work has found that humans do not always make the best possible decisions when working together with computer systems. By designing and deploying improved forms of support for interactive collaboration between human decision makers and systems, we can enable decision making processes that better leverage the strengths of both collaborators. Mediated communication is becoming the primary form of communication for young people, and adults follow in increasing numbers. Online communication is increasingly enriched by the use of memes, pictures, audio and video, though language (textual and oral) remains a fundamental tool with which people interact, convey their opinions, construct and determine their social identity. Lifelogging data (e.g., health, fitness, food) is growing as well on the social web. This type of personal information source, gathered for private use through personal devices, is now often shared in online communities. These trends open new challenges for research: how to harness the power of collective intelligence and quantified self data in online social platforms to identify social identities, how to exploit continuous feedback threads, and how to improve the individual user experience on the social web. The ongoing integration of devices into our daily lives furthers the integration of technology in human learning. With technology increasingly gaining more data and intelligence, a new era of technology-enhanced adaptive learning is emerging. Consequently, the interactions between learners, teachers and technology are becoming increasingly complex. Learning is a positioned as a complex human process that involves cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, affective and psychomotor aspects which interact with the learning context. Smart technological solutions are increasingly able to identify and model the learner needs on these five aspects and accordingly provide personalized support that can improve the effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction of learning experiences. Current research in artificial intelligence combined with data science and learning analytics bring new opportunities to recognize, and effectively support individual learners' needs and orchestrate collaborate and classroom learning with intelligent learning solutions, and augment teachers in blended learning situations. The aim of this track is to foreground the systematic complexity of human learning and use systematic analytic approaches to measure, diagnose and support human learning with technologies. This covers not only formal educational settings, but also lifelong learning requirements (including workplace training) as well as the acquisition of skills informal learning settings (e.g., in daily activities, serious games, sports, healthcare, wellbeing, etc.). These systems record information on user behavior in terms of actions on music items, such as play, skip, or playlist creation and modification. As a result, an abundance of user and usage data has been collected and is available to companies and academics, allowing for user profiling and to create and improve personalized music access. This track addresses unsolved challenges in this area relating to user understanding and modeling, personalization in recommendation and retrieval systems, modeling usage context, and adapting interactive intelligent music interfaces. Personalised systems, tailored to the needs and behaviours of individual patients, are one of the promising approaches to health promotion by encouraging lifestyle change, managing treatment programmes and providing doctors and other healthcare providers with detailed individualized feedback. The challenges to developing such systems, which model user needs and preferences, as well as appropriate medical knowledge to provide assistance and recommendations are plentiful. Maintaining the high quality and impact of the ACM UMAP series, each paper will have three reviews by program committee members and a meta-review presenting the reviewers' consensual view; the review process will be coordinated by the program chairs in collaboration with the corresponding area chairs. Long (8 pages + references) and Short (4 pages + references) papers in ACM style, peer reviewed, original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of UMAP and papers showcasing innovative use of UMAP and exploring the benefits and challenges of applying UMAP technology in real-life applications and contexts are welcome. Long papers should present original reports of substantive new research techniques, findings, and applications of UMAP. They should place the work within the field and clearly indicate innovative aspects. Research procedures and technical methods should be presented in sufficient detail to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. Results should be clearly communicated and implications of the contributions/findings for UMAP and beyond should be explicitly discussed. Short papers should present original and highly promising research or applications. Merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity, extensive technical validation, and user studies. For both long papers and short paper submissions, it is not required to anonymize the manuscripts, i.e., ACM UMAP will apply a single-blind reviewing process. Separation of long and short papers will be strictly enforced so papers will not compete across categories, but only within each category. We are delighted to announce the publication of *Good Data*, #29 in the Institute of Network Cultures Theory on Demand series. This open access book, edited by Angela Daly, S Kate Devitt and Monique Mann, contains 20 chapters from an international interdisciplinary group of authors, starting the conversation on what Good Data is and how we can progress towards a pragmatic Good Data future. These 20 chapters paint a more positive picture of what our digital lives and practices are and could be. We don’t have to accept the Bad Data dystopia we are currently in, or give up our digital tech entirely and retreat to Neo-Luddism. Another digitised world is possible (and necessary), and *Good Data* shows us a glimpse of what and how it could be. Kind regards, Michael Stevenson Call for Papers: Legacy Systems Special issue of Internet Histories: Digital Technology, Culture and Society Special issue editors: Michael Stevenson and Anne Helmond (University of Amsterdam) What are the legacy systems, technological or otherwise, that inform the contemporary digital media landscape? What early computer networks, outdated software, platforms, programming languages, standards, dissolved companies, and forgotten developer and user communities continue to exert influence on how we produce and experience digital culture? How might we conceptualize forms of continuity and change that, while not unique to internet histories, nonetheless capture what Megan Ankerson (following Lucy Suchman) describes as historically specific, techno-social processes of configuration and reconfiguration? Similar questions revolve around how our access to internet histories has been configured: how do past technologies, pre-existing legal frameworks and early imaginaries of the internet continue to enable and constrain web archiving practices and the methods we develop to study web archives? In short, how does the internet’s past operate in the present? In computing, a legacy system refers to seemingly obsolete technology that remains in use. Deemed too expensive to replace or otherwise resistant to wholesale change, a legacy system formats present action according to a logic stemming from a prior historical moment. Legacy systems can be thought of as outdated technologies that impose artificial constraints on the future, however for this special issue we are particularly interested in how such techno-social configurations carry the past forward. What histories are lurking behind today’s systems and software, standards and protocols, genres and practices? The concept also connects to a growing interest in studying practices of maintenance and repair. What efforts have sustained supposedly obsolete technologies, products, forums and platforms? We invite submissions that relate explicitly or implicitly to the concept of legacy systems, either in its technical or metaphorical uses, and that also fit within the journal’s general scope. In particular we seek articles that combine historical research with theoretical or methodological reflection, however we are certainly open to submissions that do one or the other. The special issue is inspired by The Web That Was, the third bi-annual RESAW conference to be held at the University of Amsterdam (NL) from June 18-21, 2019 (http://thewebthatwas.net/ <http://thewebthatwas.net/>). Over the second half of the 20th century, privacy came to mean control of one’s personal information. Though privacy is never easy no matter its definition and practice, control strains under the weight of the realities of 21st century digital life. International strife around who controls information and how that control leads to power has generated interesting and global discussions. We seek to take advantage of both the location and theme of the conference by: 1) unpacking the perspectives and approaches policymakers and policy actors take, nationally and globally; 2) critique and provoke perspectives and inspire new angles and outside-the-box thinking; and 3) create plans of action to develop meaningful research in privacy, technology, and public policy that address the emerging landscape of AI systems. There is significant need and demand for scholarship to help understand and prevent the challenging issues that have presented in the past few years including data privacy and consent in social computing environments, government surveillance, algorithmic bias, and ubiquitous location tracking via mobile devices. This demand is situated within complicated global politics, as well as complex and rapidly changing technical environments. Additionally, there is an ongoing demand from policy makers and legislative professionals to learn from and be guided by emerging research scholarship. Because of overwhelming datafication efforts, privacy today often means digital privacy and cannot be considered without attention to the design, systems, markets, players, and incentives within which privacy is conceptualized and practiced. The event will take meaningful steps toward meeting the demand present in Washington. Pre-Conference Details In this preconference workshop we aim to unpack the privacy and policy implications of emerging technological ecosystems. This year, we will focus specifically on emerging issues in AI systems, including algorithmic decision making, machine learning, big data, and autonomous systems. We will convene a cross-section of policymakers, scholars, journalists, technologists, and advocates to identify key emerging issues and policy needs. We will begin the day with keynotes and panels from invited guests in law and policy, followed by highly interactive discussions of research, and identification of research and policy agendas. All participants will contribute to making this workshop dynamic and fruitful. There are several possible ways to contribute: * Lightning talks: Speakers will provide brief (3-minute) provocations to get attendees to consider, critique, and counter-narrate critical privacy and technology issues in AI, both nationally and globally. Lightning talks focus on one key point within the scope of this pre-conference topics (privacy and policy implications of emerging AI ecosystems –algorithmic decision-making, machine learning, big data, autonomous systems). This can be an idea, successful project, a cautionary story, collaboration invitation, or quick demonstration. Interested speakers should submit one proposal in the participation form. Platforms, data centres, software, but also new forms of organising cultural production and labour, shape the politics of digital cultures and transform the media industries. Digital and media infrastructures have become elemental to everyday life. They are significant in reproducing existing social and cultural inequalities, as well as creating new power struggles. As digital/media infrastructures unfold in everyday life, they bring challenges across multiple domains, from the foundations of social justice to the industrial structures underpinning our everyday interactions with media and communication systems. This conference aims to address the politics and inequalities that emerge, as technological and media industries adopt, dismantle and transform infrastructures to channel and process communication flows. Media infrastructures (broadly) operate under different and uneven conditions that configure media labour, media production, and the politics of communication and access (Starosielski and Parks 2015). This conference seeks to examine digital/media infrastructures and inequalities from an inter- and multi-disciplinary perspective, inviting papers to interrogate the significance of the ‘infrastructural turn’ in media and communication studies to our understanding of media industries, democracy and digital cultures. During this joint-ECREA section conference, we aim to engage with questions concerning inequalities and the infrastructures of digital culture, media industries and (digital) democracy through addressing topics such as (but not limited to): * The value, significance and relevance of infrastructure studies to media industry studies, the study of media and democracy, as well as digital culture * The industries and labour that operate and control specific technological media infrastructures, such as data centres, cloud computing, cable/satellite networks, content delivery networks * The politics and power dynamics of digital/media infrastructures * The significance of digital/media infrastructures in everyday life, especially related to the reproduction of social inequalities * The impact of digital/media infrastructures on culture, society, politics and democracy * The impact of digital/media infrastructures on media labour and cultural production * The organisational and cultural infrastructures of the media industries * Experiences and affective relationships that emerge in connection with media infrastructures * Forms of logistical media * Temporalities of media infrastructures * Emerging questions for the foundations of social justice in the digital media infrastructural turn Submission details Please submit a 300-word abstract for individual proposals. "Resistance to dominant modes of thinking, knowing, and doing can take a variety of forms– and often results in the production of new epistemological communities of practice. The counter-hegemonic epistemologies of conspiracy theorists, self-experimenters, citizen scientists, marginalized and oppressed communities, and members of many other knowledge domains frequently embody narratives and ways of knowing that run against the dominant paradigms of their social and historical contexts. Thomas Kuhn’s work on paradigm shifts is just one example of the turmoil around shifts in dominant scientific epistemology. In many cases, critical or disruptive epistemologies are met by those in power with skepticism and even fear. This open panel calls for case studies addressing counter-hegemonic epistemologies in the fields of history of science and technology, as well as STS, information studies, education, media studies, and other relevant disciplines. We are particularly interested in research that brings a comparative historical perspective to bear on the continuously contested nature of dominant knowledge systems. Some points to consider could be: how have specific counter-narratives affected the dominant discourses in the fields that they challenge? Alternatively, how do dominant discourses overpower counter-hegemonic epistemologies? What kinds of contexts does this happen in, and what are the social, political, and historical implications of such contestation? We welcome submissions that address communities including but not limited to alternative education, decolonial science and technology, clandestine chemistry, whistleblowing, harm reduction, and radical politics. This panel will focus on how the nature of what the future holds may be enfolded in the present in registers that cannot necessarily or completely be articulated: the registers of bodies, emotions, affect, sensations, spaces, capacities, and the virtual. We are interested in bringing together scholars whose work examines the way in which the feeling of the future exists in the work and labor of the present. This includes especially how the feeling of the future defines and reconfigures inequalities, along the lines of class, gender, sexuality, race or ethnicity, or along other lines, and thereby impacts what is experienced as possible/not possible and for whom, and what solidarities are formed/not formed. All methodological and conceptual approaches are welcome. We hope to bring together scholars from multiple disciplines who share a common interest in the areas of what may be felt, to consider how our training and trajectories as researchers may lead to differing conceptualizations of these topics, but also to see what kinds of overlaps and compatibilities are generated by a more concrete concern with issues of work and labor. Her research centers on issues of responsibility, ethicality, knowledge, and emotions in the institutions and practices of health care and medicine. Her book, Never Good Enough: Health Care Workers and the False Promise of Job Training (Cornell 2009), examined the creation and justification of a billion-dollar industry for training, upgrading, and multiskilling unionized, frontline health care workers in New York City, in the midst of widespread restructuring of the health care sector. She also published two book chapters on affective and caring labour in this training industry. More recently, she worked for several years with an interdisciplinary research group based at the University of Toronto examining the processes around medical device adoption, regulation, and surveillance in Canada. Her current research, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, focuses on pelvic floor surgery and the adoption of new devices and techniques into surgery, including transvaginal mesh. Karen Gregory is a digital sociologist, ethnographer, and lecturer in the department of sociology at the University of Edinburgh and Programme Director of the MSc in Digital Society<http://www.sps.ed.ac.uk/gradschool/prospective/taught_masters/a_g/msc_in_di…>. Her current research explores the possibilities for solidarity in a digital economy, conducting interviews among Deliveroo riders in Scotland. Before coming to Edinburgh, Karen was a lecturer in Division of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at The City College of New York, where she developed and ran the City Lab, a digital collaboration that brought faculty together to develop and highlight digital resources and support for writing, research, communication. She is co-editor of Digital Sociologies (Policy Press, 2016) and her work has appeared in American Behavioral Scientist, Triple C: Communication, Capitalism, and Critique, The Sociological Review, and Women’s Studies Quarterly. Elizabeth Wissinger is a Professor of Fashion Studies and Sociology. She is a faculty member of the Masters of Arts and Liberal Studies program at the Graduate School and University Center and the Department of Social Sciences at BMCC/CUNY. She has published and spoken about fashion, technology, and embodiment, in the U.S. and internationally. Her book, This Year’s Model: Fashion, Media, and the Making of Glamour (NYU 2015), tracks how emerging technologies shape the demand for varying bodily ideals, which fashion models promote by doing “glamour labor,” the work to appear as attractive, exciting, and cool in person as one’s curated and filtered online self.
