Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. Participations: Journal of Audience and Reception Studies has just released its latest issue! This open-access journal features three special sections. The first is aimed at understanding readers, reading, and digital media, the second looks at interviews as a research method, and the third section features nine essays from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth conference on "Researching past cinema audiences: Archives, Memories and Methods". With an editorial introduction by Martin Barker and a series of articles that provide innovative theoretical, methodological, as well as empirical insights, including the audience reception of professional wrestling stars, the circulation of film and cultural capital, and the understanding of resistance as observed in online discussions, this issue is packed with relevant and contemporary insight into audience research in 2019. CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw EASST 2018, 25-28th July 2018, Lancaster University, UK Convenors: Johan Söderberg (Göteborg University) & Maxigas (Lancaster University) Deadline for submissions: February 14th 2018. Submit abstracts and contact the conveners at: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6286 We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our panel at EASST 2018 The panel investigates innovation processes driven by antagonistic relations between actors on both sides of the law. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. >From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. Any research on/with YouTube API?

So I stumbled into a developer who created one of those "floating" YouTube music video players. After six years of curating the original radio news "flash briefing," I thought hey, why not try video. Combining forces on Android (so far) we've come up with: http://tvnewsapp.com So, here's the deal. The YouTube API is pretty darn interesting and I'd love to connect with researchers who are experimenting with it. I am interested in ways to better automate how to surface live news streams. The app has scores of these. I never expected so many from so many countries. Some countries clearly are all in with nearly all news channels competing on Facebook while others while free on the web haven't joined the YouTube club. Hello, The annual Fairness Accountability Transparency (FAT*) conference has a new look: first time in Europe, with a (soon to be announced) new name, and a brand new Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) track: https://fatconference.org/2020/callforpapers.html Primarily a Computer Science + Law conference, FAT* is now evolving in response to critical scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities about the algorithmic shaping of everyday life and social and political institutions; that there needs to be more than just a computational tweak to ensure fairness and manage bias in these socio-technical systems. I am honoured to be part of the SSH track committee this year. The CfP is not formally out yet, but on behalf of the SSH team I am sending out an advance notice for people in this community. Please look out for the CfP in the coming weeks (on Twitter follow @fatconference). Full papers are due August third week, which is not a very long time away. So please start thinking about that half-written paper you have tucked away and that can be finished in time for this call. The SSH track is looking for submissions from STS, History of Science, critical Tech/Media studies, big data + algorithm studies, Philosophy etc. We are hoping to give the reviewers a very hard time choosing between the many brilliant submissions we get to the SSH track!! Self-nominations are welcome and the nomination process is quite short, as detailed below. Larp about technology?

Hello everyone - I just spent the week at a Larp camp (live action roleplaying) with my kids and absolutely loved it. I’m thinking a Larp about a near future drenched in ethical dilemmas about technology use might be brilliant for research dissemination, teaching, and maybe research too. Conveniently enough, it turns out two of the Larp writers involved with the camp I was at have recently been hired by my university’s freshly renovated museum to facilitate dramatic participatory research dissemination, and they’re keen on developing a larp with me. Do any of you have experience using larping in research dissemination or teaching at university level? Or do you know examples of technology-rich larps? Or have any other suggestions?
