Digital Interactions in Social Spaces: Proxemics, Digital Media, and Human-Machine Communication Special Issue, Electronic Journal of Communication (EJC) Edited by John A. McArthur, Furman University Fifty years ago, Edward T. Hall coined the term "proxemics" to describe the human use of space in physical and interpersonal environments. Now, in an age of dynamic and ever-present digital communication, the cultural implications of proxemics are changing. Social media sites offer online gathering spaces for group engagement. Sentient objects in the Internet of Things connect our physical environments with our digital archives. Computer interfaces interpret human spatial behaviors. And mobile devices track, alter, and orient us in the spaces we inhabit. As culture changes, so change the rules and norms of proxemics. Over the last decade, investigations at the intersection of space and social, mobile, digital, and participatory media have yielded a growing conversation about human communication and the spaces we inhabit. This has reinvigorated our conceptions about the ways humans and machines interact in the spatial environment. This special issue will focus on intersections between proxemics and the rhetorical and communicative impacts of digital, social, mobile, and participatory technologies. *call for papers -- due August 1* CFP -- Prospecting: Extraction, Speculation, and Liberation in the Accelerated Academy (Accelerated Academy 7) Nov. 22-23, 2019 Michigan State University Digital Scholarship Lab An interdisciplinary symposium on the future of academic life and labor, organized by Zach Kaiser (MSU) and Erin Glass (UC San Diego) In theory, the academy is an institution of research and learning, intended to advance human knowledge and educate citizens. In practice, however, the academy appears evermore as a site of prospecting, or a source of raw material for aggressive forms of neoliberal mining and extraction. Through various speculative and extractive behaviors, academic practice is increasingly managed and shaped by internal and external forces as a means of “optimizing” academic activities and making them more efficient in order to cut costs and maximize revenue. As is well documented in the growing literature of critical university studies, this prospecting is manifest in the adjunctification of academic labor, the rise of administration, the continuous increase of student tuition, and the perpetuation of the student debt crisis that has engulfed the United States. We can also see prospecting in the ruthless capture and privatization of scholarly research by scholarly publishers at the cost of public access to research that the public has in fact already paid for. Prospecting is also at play in the academy’s collision course with surveillance/platform/cognitive capitalism: the university’s intellectual products have been transformed into valuable data to be mined, packaged, sold, and ultimately controlled by IT and ed tech capitalists in their pursuit of profit. Though these extractive and neoliberal processes are not unique to the academy, their presence in institutions dedicated to learning has implications for academic subjectivities and the institutions themselves. Building on the work of past Accelerated Academy symposia, the 7th edition proposes the concept of “prospecting” as a productive tool to think through the future of academic life, labor, and outcomes. Prospecting as a concept may help us broaden the discourses about academia, and shine light on the different economic interests, technical assemblages, and affective regimes that shape its activities. We are also, however, committed to the challenge of identifying prospects of autonomy and liberation that are still within the academy despite its compromised state, and thinking through the strategies that academics might use to better take advantage of them. We encourage contributors to consider the various material and social connotations carried by the term “prospecting,” and the way it might help us develop a robust analysis of life in the accelerated academy and the high stakes of our contemporary moment. Topics might include: • Prospecting as it relates to the extractive behaviors characteristic of the accelerated and platformized academy, including the extractive data capture of students and faculty through educational and workflow technologies. • Prospecting as an extractive colonial appropriation of land and of bodies within academe (and the uneven distribution of the consequences of this behavior across race, gender, and class lines). • Prospecting as extractive ecological behaviors by academia (ranging from the harvesting of minerals to produce the technologies on which our academic infrastructure is built to academic travel). • Prospecting in terms of university real-estate speculation and acquisition, campus development, the increase in satellite campuses of major western universities overseas (particularly in the middle and far east), as well as the growth of extension and continuing-ed programs. • Liberatory/radical prospecting, or the ways that we, as the academic community, can work towards reclaiming the academy for social justice and the public good. This ethos is embodied in works like Stefano Harney and Fred Moten's "The Undercommons," Kathleen Fitzpatrick’s “Generous Thinking,” la paperson’s “A Third University is Possible,” Cathy Davidson’s “The New Education,” and Christopher Newfield’s “The Great Mistake.” We welcome contributions (ranging from paper presentations to artistic projects, hands-on sessions, projections, tours, etc) from anyone who is interested in and passionate about these topics. Data’s “big”: there’s not only lots of it, but its volume has allowed for the development of new, large-scale processing techniques. Our relationship with governments, medical organisations, technology companies, the education sector, and so on are increasingly informed by the data we overtly or inadvertently provide when we use particular services. The proverbial data deluge is large-scale—but it’s also personal. Data increasingly characterises what it means to be a person in the present. Data promises to personalise services to better meet our individual needs. Data is often construed as a threat to our person(s). Not every person predicated by data is predicted the same. The intersection between data and person isn’t fixed: it has to be figured. The aim of this conference is to bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers to explore how the person—or persons, plural—are figured in/out of data. The figuration of a person might encompass any or all of processes of representation, calculation, analogisation, prediction, and conceptualisation. It cuts across multiple scales, epistemological modes, and disciplinary areas of enquiry. It tackles problems that cross into disparate disciplines. Our proposition is that the conceptual language of ‘the figure’ and its variations—figuration, figuring, to figure, and so on—can help us to apprehend what the person is and how it is processed in the present. We invite proposals for *20-minute presentations *that take up or respond to the question of how the person is figured in/out of data. We are interested in presentations that address the conceptual, methodological, analytical and/or empirical challenge of figuring the person in the present. Conversely, we are also interested in papers that take up the concept of the figure—broadly construed—as an heuristic for producing knowledge about the constitution of person(s) in the present. Our proposition is deliberately interdisciplinary. We encourage proposals from researchers working in disciplines for whom the figure is central. These might include, but are not limited to: the social sciences, art history, media studies, the medical humanities, literary studies, philosophy, science and technology studies, urban studies, or geography. In distance education it is essential to use digital mediation systems in order to establish contact between students, teachers and resources, which makes this field very conducive to incorporating methods of learning analysis. Based on these evidences, this special issue aims to strengthen the connections between data-based educational research and the field of digital learning, with the aim of enriching knowledge about learning processes and the management of teaching in non-presential and digitally mediated spaces. The phenomenon of data-driven education has led to different types of studies. There is a great deal of research using educational data mining that seeks to analyze student behavior patterns and to establish relationships between the variables involved in the learning process and learning outcomes. A second trend refers to studies with a pedagogical approach, which use the aggregated information resulting from the analysis of the data with the aim of improving instructional design, enriching didactic methods and better understanding the role of educational agents. Finally, there is also a significant amount of research that focuses on the institutional derivatives of the use of digital data and seeks to develop frameworks for improving strategic decision-making, organizational design, and curricular policies. Contributions to this special issue may consist of both theoretical and applied approaches: they may be survey studies on the state of the art of data-driven education, or research papers presenting evidence of interest in this field of study. They may also employ quantitative or qualitative approaches from data science and educational data mining, as well as from the field of pedagogy and educational sciences. In the case of empirical research, contributions that go beyond documenting student activity in a course emphasizing the application in practice are particularly welcome. We invite case studies from traditional distance education settings (e.g. learning management systems) but also more specialized and contemporary environments like games for learning or intelligent tutoring systems. Research that provides a deeper insight into different learning processes, such as those that help to measure the skills that students acquire in online courses, how those skills change throughout a course or in lifelong learning situations, and, in general, that proposes causal reasoning to understand how the behaviour of students in digitally mediated spaces affects their learning, will also be welcome. We propose to organize the special issue around the following themes: — Implications of analytics in the improvement of learning processes, teaching practices and instructional design. — New research on exploratory, predictive or causal analytics to improve learning success. — Pilot studies or policy frameworks for the implementation of learning analytics at an institutional level. — Analytics in open and connected learning spaces. — Innovative approaches to data-driven education. Dear Scholars, I invite you to submit a proposal for a chapter in the forthcoming “The Internet and the 2020 Campaign” (under contract with Lexington Books). Chapters in the book, which follows a similar volume published in 2017 <https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781498542982/The-Internet-and-the-2016-Presidentia…> about the previous presidential election, will look at various aspects of the online campaign. While much of the focus will be on the presidential race, proposals focusing on congressional, state and local elections are encouraged and welcome. “The Internet and the 2020 Campaign” will explore the continued evolution of the Internet’s role in presidential campaigns. Although many developments surrounding the Internet campaign are now considered to be standard fare, there will no doubt be a number of new developments in 2020. Topics could include, but are not limited to: *How candidates, political campaign organizations, issue advocacy groups, and other political networks use the Internet and social media platforms in their campaign efforts; *How the Internet and online mediums are employed to disseminate political news and information; *The intersection between the Internet and mainstream media in political news-making; *How social media and Internet use influence political engagement and participation; *How campaigns are employing social media companies, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, SnapChat, and Reddit to gather consumer data, micro-target, and communicate with potential voters; *How online outlets spread misinformation or “fake news” to the public and how misinformation may influence what citizens know about the candidates and campaign. CALL FOR PAPERS for an edited book tentatively entitled: *Discourse Analysis and Conflict Studies: Applying discourse approaches to studying conflict and conflict resolution* The editors are in talks with John Benjamins Publishing Company (Amsterdam) and plan to publish the edited volume in the Benjamins’ *Discourse Approaches to Politics, Culture and Society series *(edited by Jo Angouri and Andreas Musolff). This book series is peer-reviewed and indexed in Scopus. *Discourse Analysis and Conflict Studies* Interest in the broad subject of conflict studies by linguists and language scholars has increased over the years with the growing incidents of conflicts, wars and political violence around the world. There have also been increasing and interesting studies that applied linguistic and discourse approaches to the study of violent protests, activism and political struggles. These studies have given significant insights to the role of language use or discourse in conflict initiation and conflict resolution. From these burgeoning studies, it is clear that there is a strong connection between how what is said or written and how conflict may develop and escalate. Discourse theorists generally believe that oral or written discourse produced by different people vary with recognizable patterns, depending on their social domains of life (see, for example, Laclau & Mouffe, 1985). The work of a discourse analyst is to analyze these patterns and identify their significance and consequences. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) for example, shows how language works in sociocultural and political contexts, focusing on power relations and ideological perspectives reflected in discourse texts, and their wider implications for the society. Hence, a critical discourse study of subtle texts such as news reports (or “fake news”), editorials, propaganda, social media publications, etc. in the form of writing, visual or multimodal/video streaming will be very important in contemporary times. This collection of essays will aim to show the synergy between discourse analysis and conflict studies by showing how topics in conflicts studies and conflict resolution may be researched using methods and approaches in discourse analysis (e.g. CDA, multi-modal discourse analysis, conversation analysis, pragmatics, argumentation, rhetoric etc.) This study will attempt to cover all conflict-related topics within the fields of political science, international relations, sociology, media studies, applied linguistics etc., which will include: · Terrorism and extremism · Conflict and war · Political crisis · Ethnic violence/sectarian crisis · Activism and violent protest · Hate speech and verbal war (in the media and the Internet etc.) · Conflict resolution techniques · Discourse and peace processes · Etc. 2019 Nancy Baym Book Award Winners

It’s a great honor to announce that AoIR’s book award committee has chosen The Digital Street by Jeffrey Lane (Oxford University Press) for this year’s Nancy Baym Book Award. We are also recognizing Robert Gehl’s Weaving the Dark Web: Legitimacy on Freenet, Tor, and I2P (MIT Press) with an Honorable Mention. The Digital Street is a compelling ethnography of the interconnecting codes of disadvantaged girls and boys on the streets of Harlem and digital media. He shows the overlaps, disconnects, and, perhaps most importantly, the opportunities social media may offer for intervening in youth violence. Its combination of urban ethnography with the digital provides a model both for ethnographers unused to considering the digital, and for digital ethnographers less versed in urban approaches.
