The Director will lead the communications team to implement that strategy, translating the Center’s work using channels appropriate to our many different audiences, and identify new platforms for showcasing the Center’s work. The Director will work collaboratively across the organization, engaging with leadership, research and public programming staff and leveraging and engaging our diverse internal community of staff, fellows, interns, collaborators, partners, and alums. Two-way communication, listening, and feedback from BKC’s various constituencies will be a critical component of the position, as will supporting and amplifying the voices of our community and their projects. The Director of Communications will also lead internal communications efforts including annual reports, community announcements, promotion of events, and media monitoring, and support the organization to maintain the highest quality communication practices. Specific responsibilities include: - Drafting strategic priorities for the Center’s communications team (prioritization, providing direction) - Creating and communicating a coherent set of narratives to bring our projects to internal and external audiences - Creating analytic goals and frameworks to measure impact? Developing and practicing ongoing engagement modes to engage Center alumni, donors, and other key stakeholders - Writing and overseeing the production of white papers, blog posts, articles, and presentation decks - Understanding the nature of the work done by individual communication team members, providing guidance on task prioritization and problem-solving,conducting performance reviews, and supporting team members’ ongoing growth as professionals. - Formally and informally advising BKC staff on communications best practices both within the BKC ecosystem and in general. Examples include media training, writing for different audiences, etc. - Engaging and maintaining relationships with communications professionals around the University and nearby academic communities - Serving as a member of the Center's leadership team, helping to make decisions about processes, staffing, and other management issues as they arise *Basic Qualifications* Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field required. *Additional Qualifications* - Advanced degree in a related field preferred. - Experience in journalism including experience working at a leading media organization and a network of personal connections to media professionals. - Broad knowledge of scholarly research, public policy and legislation, and industry developments in the fields of communication technology is critical, as is the ability to effectively communicate that knowledge to diverse public and private audiences. - Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. - Demonstrated sound judgment, exceptional ethical standards, discretion, and tact. - Background participating in, serving and engaging diverse communities. - Comfortable working both independently and closely with teams and collaborators in a diverse, dynamic environment. - Heart, verve, and vigor; a can-do attitude; a very good sense of humor and a strong desire to affect change in the world. - Experience with crisis management is nice to have. *Additional Information* As with all Berkman positions, this is a term appointment currently expected to extend through June 30, 2020, with a strong possibility of renewal based on continued funding and business needs. Critical Perspectives (Open access peer-review edited volume) Publisher: University of Westminster Press Series: Critical, Digital and Social Media Studies Editor: Pieter Verdegem (University of Westminster) INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION This collection of contributions brings together critical debates about Artificial Intelligence (AI) to interrogate how we should understand what constitutes AI, its impact and challenges. If we want to make sure that AI-powered applications and solutions will benefit society at large and mitigate AI’s potential negative consequences, we need to overcome the widespread dichotomic (utopian/dystopian) thinking about AI. By offering different perspectives and engaging in critical conversations on the potential and impact of AI, this collection aims to invite all stakeholders involved to contribute to a more nuanced vision of how to make sure AI will deliver benefits for everyone, if at all possible (and what is needed to facilitate change). What makes this collection timely and necessary: * Urgency – technologies are changing so quickly and becoming embedded with little public scrutiny * Public debate is polarised – critical perspectives must offer a necessary nuance to address then answer fundamental questions about power * Critical – we are facing a new era of technological determinism and governments and business actors are seeking technological solutions without interrogating the consequences. The assumption is that AI is inevitable, everywhere. We have not even started asking the right questions * Interdisciplinary – approach * Debate – interaction between different stakeholders (scholars, government, industry, civil society and activists) QUESTIONS, TOPICS AND FORMAT This collection asks fundamental and critical questions, such as: * What is AI, and what is it not? * What is good AI and for whom? * How is AI developed, by whom and on what data has it been trained? * Who owns the AI infrastructure, algorithms and datasets? * Who has the power to classify and who is involved? * Who benefits from AI? Who does not? * Who is excluded and what are the consequences? * How should we decide where AI can be beneficial, and where harmful? CFP on gender and work in rural areas (GWO2020)

We call for contributions to a stream on gender and work in rural regions for the Gender Work and Organization conference, 24-26 June 2020 in University of Kent, Canterbury, UK. While much of the research on gender, work, organization and entrepreneurship is conducted in urban settings, we are interested in contributions that analyse the impact of a rural context on gendered working conditions and relationships. More discussion is needed on how rural and sparsely populated regions experience the current societal changes and their impact on working lives. Intersections of gender with age, race, ethnicity, class, caste and sexuality in relation to daily life around work need to be discussed with rurality in focus. If all goes as we hope, a few of us co-chairs will incorporate as many of the comments and suggestions as we can into a further revision for presentation to the membership during the upcoming Brisbane conference. QUT PhD Scholarship in Digital Platform Regulation This is a unique opportunity for a PhD student to work with a world-leading team on a major Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project, The Platform Governance Project: Rethinking Internet Regulation as Media Policy. The project is led by researchers in the QUT Digital Media Research Centre, working in collaboration with an international team including University of Sydney, Duke University, and the University of Salzburg. You will be working with internationally renowned researchers such as Professor Terry Flew (current President of the International Communication Association) and Professor Nicolas Suzor (ARC DECRA Fellow). We are seeking a PhD candidate whose work can situate digital platform companies in the shifting political economy of digital media, with particular reference to the changing nature of media industries and markets, issues around content governance, and the turn towards greater regulation of digital platforms as global tech giants increasingly dominate the internet. [please circulate] The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy are pleased to host a workshop on Comparative Approaches to Disinformation <https://cyber.harvard.edu/story/2019-09/comparative-approaches-disinformati…> at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA on* October 4, 2019*. This by-invitation workshop will feature scholars from around the world discussing their research on the prevalence, impact, and diffusion of disinformation. The presentations will cover new theoretical and empirical contributions to existing bodies of knowledge in this area, offer comparative perspectives involving multiple countries, explore interdisciplinary approaches, and examine other areas of research such as cross-platform analysis. *REGISTRATION* There are a limited number of spaces available to participants not presenting at the workshop. Media Industries 2020 (MI2020) maintains an open intellectual agenda, inviting papers, panels or workshops exploring the full breadth of media industries, in contemporary and historical contexts, and from all traditions of media industries scholarship. MI2020 will therefore provide a meeting ground for all forms of media industries research. As a specialized focus, the 2020 conference takes Global Currents and Contradictions as its coordinating theme. In media industries scholarship, repeated attention to a few key territories, frequently but not exclusively located in the Global North, has concentrated but also limited the scope of the field. In choosing the theme Global Currents and Contradictions, we are therefore particularly interested in receiving submissions engaging with industries, contexts and bodies of research that represent, extend or challenge the geographic reach of the field. To headline this theme, a programme of keynote speakers will be announced in due course. Pre-constituted Workshops Format: 90mins interactive forum led by 4 to 6 x 6mins thematically linked informal presentations. dear Charles and student there an R package called syuzhet which has sentiment lexicons included. Another option is to use the R-package tidytext which includes the NRC-lexicon. The manuals provide some examples on how to use it. The drawback is, you need to have experience with R or learn it. It's not a waste because R can do a lot more than sentiment analysis. Lots of issues and questions there, but it's best to avoid generalising about emotional AI/analytics as there are so many forms, e.g. sentiment and multiple form of biometrics. The latter can be read in all sorts of ways too (some clear pseudoscience, but others inferences are more meaningful). How reliable are ?emotion analysis? tools? How would outcomes from them be used? As you say, there is a lack of clarity in some in terms of ?explaining emotional categories.? To me, this signals (along with obvious knowledge about the limitations and problems with algorithms), that there is opportunity here to be very, very, very wrong about people?s opinions, and any algorithmically interpreted ?emotional? state. For example, how would one interpret or finesse ?frustration,? vs ?anger?? The written word is contained within a language. Not all commenters will be native speakers to that language, and not all native speakers have the language tools required (even within their own language) to adequately express themselves, even in the best of times. What makes anyone think an algorithm would do better at this than a human trained in qualitative methods and with cultural and media and language knowledge? There is way too much margin of potential error here for this to be automated, or ?useful.? It is much more likely that things will be assumed incorrectly by limited algorithms in the first place. Furthermore, does your student see any problem with this exercise? That their tool analysis might get it very wrong? That the wrong might lead to assumptions or outcomes that are harmful to entities, people, governments? What safeguards are in place for wrong assumptions and outcomes? The Center conducts research designed to further our understanding of the contemporary digital media environment and how it shapes our democracy. This is a tenure-track position. Conduct significant research on the structure, organization, or experiences of digital information environments and the impacts of technology on democracy from the disciplinary perspectives of information, communication, law, media studies, or adjacent disciplines. Teach two courses per semester in the School of Information and Library Science. Participate in and contribute to the activities of the School of Information and Library Science and UNC Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life.
