The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (workshops2020(a)iui.acm.org<mailto:workshops2020@iui.acm.org>), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops and tutorials, including but not limited to: - "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). - "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. - "Project centric" workshops that may be closely related to the scope of an existing large scale (e.g. NSF, EU, etc. funded) project. - "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation. - Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. Workshops and tutorials will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of proposals for full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop or tutorial. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop and tutorials chairs. Workshops with few submissions by Friday, 20 December 2019 may be cancelled, shortened, merged with other workshops, or otherwise restructured. The organizers of accepted workshops and tutorials are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Workshop and tutorial organizers will maintain their own website with information about the workshop or tutorial and the IUI 2020 web site will refer to the this website. The workshop organizers will coordinate the paper solicitation, collection, and review process. A workshop and tutorials summary will be included in the ACM Digital Library for IUI 2020, however, there will be no archived published proceedings of workshop papers this year. We strongly encourage workshop organizers to arrange a volume of online proceedings for their workshop papers themselves, for example, by using www.ceur-ws.org<http://www.ceur-ws.org>. PROPOSAL FORMAT Workshop or tutorial proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions at https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template. Please either use the Word interim template with Libertine fonts downloaded and embedded, or the LaTex sigconf template. The proposals should be organized as follows: - Name and title: A one-word acronym and a full title. Please indicate “(Workshop)” or “(Tutorial)” after the title, as appropriate. - Description of workshop or tutorial topic: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to IUI and its interest for the IUI2020 audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the workshop or tutorial is of particular interest. - Previous history: List of previous workshops or tutorials that were held on the topic including the conferences that hosted past workshops or tutorials and the number of participants. - Organizer(s): Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the organizer(s). Provide a brief description of the background of the organiser(s). Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Please indicate the primary contact person and the organizers who plan to attend the workshop. Also please provide a list of other workshops or tutorials organized by workshop organizers in the past. - Workshop program committee: Names and affiliation of the members of the (tentative) workshop program committee that will evaluate the workshop submissions. - Participants: A statement saying how many participants you expect and how you plan to invite participants for the workshop or tutorial. If possible, include the names of at least 10 people who have expressed interest to participate in the workshop or tutorial. - Workshop or Tutorial format: A brief description of the format regarding the mix of events or activities, such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, demonstrations, teaching activities, hands-on practical exercises, general discussion. Please also list here any material you will make available to tutorial participants, e.g. slides, access to hardware/software, handouts, etc. - Planned outcomes of the workshop or tutorials: What are you hoping to achieve by the end of the workshop or tutorials. Social media research and the GDPR. How to comply?

Dear list, at Utrecht Data School<https://dataschool.nl/?lang=en> and Datafied Society<https://datafiedsociety.nl/>, we frequently carry out social media analysis. Many colleagues on this list do similar research. I turn to you with questions about the GDPR and how it might affect our research processes. I was wondering how you (EU-based researchers) comply with the GDPR and whether your institutions developed guidelines concerning the conduct of social media research. Are there privacy officers reviewing your proposals, do they use an online tool (and which) for DPIA's, submitting and reviewing the proposals, and what is the understanding and practice of informing data subjects? For example considering the duty to inform data subjects: for our research on topic-communities<http://mtschaefer.net/entry/political-topic-communities-and-their-framing-p…> on Dutch Twitter, we used a sample of one week of Twitter NL. According to the interpretation of the GDPR by some privacy officers, researchers would be now required to inform the 600.000 accounts captured in this sample about the research. They (privacy officer) cite a case from Poland, where a data broker was fined<https://www.bakermckenzie.com/en/insight/publications/2019/03/first-fine-fo…> for not informing their data subjects. I was thinking that the GDPR was exactly meant for this as the data broker used the data for his commercial business without informing the data subjects. But does the GDPR implementation act not provide exceptions here for researchers (journalists and artists)? What would happen if researchers would be indeed required to inform 600.000 users on Twitter about their research project (thinking here mostly about the feasibility and the related costs which would render most research projects too expensive to be carried out without a major grant and significant institutional support; but think also about the possible reactions to researchers if you would investigate topics such as hate speech and you should inform the authors of said hate speech about your research. I hope I am not the only one struggling with this and would be very grateful if you could help me with these questions: - how do you deal with the right to be informed when collecting large data sets? - what kind of assistance to you receive from your institution in legal information, review of project proposals and facilitation of compliance with GDPR requirements? - are there precedents of research projects that have been altered or blocked by privacy officers? - are the interpretations of privacy officers of the GDPR related to research projects widely different? - is there expertise within AoIR on these issues and where researchers can find advice on how to proceed in order to comply with GDPR? (plothet(a)savannahstate.edu<mailto:plothet@savannahstate.edu>) =-=-=-=-=-=-= Journal of Communication Technology Call for Papers It’s in the Interface: Content, Practice, and Production in the Age of Streaming Television In this issue, we seek to critically rethink media cultures and practices at the intersection of the user and the interface of communication technology. As more communication technology becomes available to more people and the speed of innovation continues to evolve, how we interact with these technologies through their representative interfaces is rife for critical interrogation. For instance, technology often replicates old media, be it in style or mechanic, such as the ability to dog-ear pages on a number of e-readers such as the Kindle or Nook, or the addition of a vinyl record scratching sound when pausing during a mix session on you.dj. Is there something particular comforting in seeing the recognizable? Is this interface more presented for ease of use or more for nostalgia? Or how about haptic media interfaces, with the added dimension of touch for our sensory utilization of the technology. How does our experience with the interface change our interpretation of the technology? Is it even the technology, or do most users see the interface as a separate construction or notion form the product itself? Does the perpetual expansion of new technology and participatory media forms, change the interface between users and shared creative “small media” content? (Hjorth 2014, Pink et. Al, 2016, Richardson 2018)? Investigating these points of intersection, interaction, and immersion are essential to understanding the affordances and constraints of the interface. Interface matters as shown in television second screen adaptions versus remote controls (Cruickshank, et. al, 2007). Ito, Sakata, & Nakanishi (2017) examined how “the amount of information on an interface screen (would) maximize the willingness of young users” to use the interface. Others have looked at how the interface helps in deciding when a patient is discharged from medical care (Jain, 2017). As technology evolves and older forms mature, in both offline and online contexts, the levels of engagement and digital embodiment must adapt to these new dynamics. This issue seeks to capture and explore an important interdisciplinary event across all forms of the user-interface dynamic, from technology, to games, to internet and media studies, or even cultural studies examining the effect of the interface upon the cultural milieu. Topics may include: • Theoretical approaches to interface design and utility • User studies examining interface interactions and adoption • Haptic interfaces and the role of touch in digital media • Sound as materiality in digital interfaces • Critical analyses of the user-interface relationship • Accessibility and universal design of interfaces • Rejection or abstention from some interface design • Generativity in interface design and consumption • Mobility and interface design Guideline for Paper Submission: Submissions should follow the manuscript guidelines for JoCTEC. • Prepare the manuscript using APA (6th ed) citation style, with text of no more than 9,000 words (inclusive of abstract, figures/tables, and references). • Submit the manuscript in Word format with all author-identifying information omitted to allow for blind peer review. • Confirm manuscript is not before another journal for consideration, and that the manuscript has not been previously published, including in a language other than English. The submission deadline is December 1, 2019. How reliable are ?emotion analysis? tools? How would outcomes from them be used? As you say, there is a lack of clarity in some in terms of ?explaining emotional categories.? To me, this signals (along with obvious knowledge about the limitations and problems with algorithms), that there is opportunity here to be very, very, very wrong about people?s opinions, and any algorithmically interpreted ?emotional? state. For example, how would one interpret or finesse ?frustration,? vs ?anger?? The written word is contained within a language. Not all commenters will be native speakers to that language, and not all native speakers have the language tools required (even within their own language) to adequately express themselves, even in the best of times. What makes anyone think an algorithm would do better at this than a human trained in qualitative methods and with cultural and media and language knowledge? There is way too much margin of potential error here for this to be automated, or ?useful.? It is much more likely that things will be assumed incorrectly by limited algorithms in the first place. Furthermore, does your student see any problem with this exercise? That their tool analysis might get it very wrong? Dear Charles, You make a great point about categories of emotions at the end of your email. Scholars interested in emotions have many theories and ways of categorizing humans’ affective states (positive vs. negative; primary vs. secondary, etc.). First, I would urge your student to investigate different classifications of emotions and humans ways of expressing them. By jumping ahead this step and seeking commercial tools (sometimes with no solid background and clarification), we miss the chance of grounding our findings and reporting reliable analysis. I find Significance Analysis (Daiute, 2014)<https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/narrative-inquiry/book240491> based on Labov and Waletzky (1997)<http://Labov,%20W.,%20&%20Waletzky,%20J.%20(1997).%20Narrative%20analysis:%….> work particularly useful in combining importance of linguistic elements and psychological states. Based on those readings, motivate your student to read the textual data (comments) repeatedly and come up with their own categorization. This step allows the researcher to be mindful about the contextually significant elements of the textual data. What clues can be used to infer the emotional tone of the comment? Ability to use R after this step would be especially useful because programming skills would allow the student to be flexible and not dependent on existing categories the above mentioned tools use. Jess suggested LICW. And Stu suggested Discover Text. Those two would be my only recommendations if researcher-led analysis is not possible for now. More info can be found here. <https://www.icahdq.org/page/2020CFP> Our proposed panel will focus on open communication, big data, infrastructures, and platforms. While open communication initiatives value transparency, collaboration, and public knowledge, these goals are often at odds with capitalistic arrangements of big data collection. Scholarship examining big data notes the issues of privacy and surveillance (Andrejevic, 2007; Introna & Wood, 2004; Esposti, 2014); the concerns related to data divides and asymmetry of access (Andrejevic & Gates, 2014); and the dangers of utilizing opaque, inexplicable, and correlative big data outputs for forms of so-called objective decision making (boyd & Crawford, 2012; Tenner, 2018). Likewise, the scholarship on platform infrastructures suggests that while they deliver essential social / cultural resources, they also prompt a recentralization of the internet that threatens to funnel data into increasingly segmented silos (Plantin & Punathambekar, 2019; Srnicek, 2017). Noting this, Plantin, Lagoze, Edwards, and Sandvig (2018) indicate that a “fraught relationship...currently exists between the public-oriented Open Web and locked-in ‘walled gardens’” of platforms and infrastructures (p. 301). To better understand this relationship, we are looking for theoretical and methodological engagements with big data platforms and infrastructures that specifically attend to the complexities of closed and open access, digital inequalities and divides, and affirmative attempts at open data usage.
