The MIC Center’s Media Ecosystem project is recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher *Philadelphia’s Media Ecosystem: Journalism, Community Organizing, and the Narratives and Power Structures that Shape our City* This project will explore the way that community groups across the region harness media and journalism and other tools to build community power. The research associate will focus on understanding the interrelationship between community-oriented media, organizing, and social change. This research will include a network analysis of both community media institutions and local community groups to understand their interconnections, as well as a qualitative examination of the ways media and other tools are harnessed to build within and across communities in the region. Skills and qualifications: ·PhD or equivalent combination of education and experience. ·Experience carrying out qualitative and ethnographic research with limited direction. ·Report writing ability, including experience writing for non-academic audiences. ·Ability to cultivate relationships quickly and excellent networking skills. ·Familiarity with and existing relationships with Philadelphia-area community groups a plus. ·Ability to perform Social Network Analysis/Organizational Network Analysis and the requisite quantitative skills to display and present data in compelling and accessible ways a plus. This post is full-time and for up to 24 months (part-time applications will also be considered). The Post-Doctoral fellow will be provided a stipend of $55,000, health insurance, a workspace, computer, and library access. It is expected that the fellow be working on-site in Philadelphia. *About MIC and the project: * The Media, Inequality & Change Center (MIC) is a collaboration between University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for communication and Rutgers University's School of Communication and Information. MIC occupies the intersection of technology, policy, and social justice. It is committed to studying the political economy of social problems, media, and democracy, while engaging local activist projects, and drawing connections with national and international social movements. Over the three-year grant, MIC will lead two integrated research projects focused on Philadelphia’s local media ecosystem. Mapping media institutions will be a multi-year, multi-phase study employing mixed methods and resulting in an in-depth, structural analysis of the region’s news media. MIC’s community network analysis will employ a political economic framework that assesses the ownership and control of local media as well as how communities harness media to make positive social change.Drawing on our deep national and international networks, MIC will cross-fertilize best practices, amplify findings, and facilitate dialogue across the city and beyond. As part of this project, MIC also will provide regular opportunities for project partners and community organizations to meet, share data, and collaborate with researchers, practitioners, and organizations engaged in similar work in other locations domestically and internationally. The project as a whole will contribute to new knowledge about the interrelationships between media, organizing, and social change. It will also shed light on the ways in which our local media ecosystem upholds systems of power. Special Issue of Culture Machine Machine Intelligences in Context: Beyond the Technological Sublime Edited by Peter Jakobsson, Anne Kaun & Fredrik Stiernstedt We are seeking contributions for a special issue of Culture Machine<https://culturemachine.net/about/> – an international open-access journal of culture and theory – exploring Machine Intelligences in Context. Culture Machine is a series of experiments in culture and theory. Its aim is to seek out and promote scholarly work that engages provocatively with contemporary technical objects, processes and imaginaries from the North and South. Building on its open ended, non-instrumental, and exploratory approach to critical theory, Culture Machine calls for creative scholarship and research that contests globalizing technical narratives and their environmental logics of extraction. This special issue is a long overdue confrontation with the hype surrounding artificial intelligence. The supposed blessings that AI will bestow upon datafied societies, as well as the associated dangers, are now well-known both to the academic specialist and to the general public. Representatives from the tech sector and the world of politics claim that the fourth industrial revolution will be powered by AI and that AI will eventually become ubiquitous within politics, industry, culture and in everyday life. The impulse behind this special issue is to interrogate these prophesies a bit closer and to get a look behind the shiny surfaces of these new, often unseen technologies. Because it does seem that what AI actually promises, and most of all, what it actually delivers, is neither found in the realm of the fantastic nor the uncanny, and a lot of it is not even particularly new, intelligent or artificial. The task of this special issue is thus to provide a counter-narrative to the dominant accounts of AI. It is not a matter of debunking AI, of unmasking the ideological interests behind it or revealing its dirty algorithmic secrets, but of putting AI in its critical contexts beyond the technological sublime – ie. the myths surrounding current technological developments that are meant to inspire both awe and fantasies of control and mastery. By combining phenomena that do not normally go together, such as AI and intersectionality, this special issue seeks to un-familiarize the familiar and to make unexpected connections, while also exploring potential critical and more just futures. One question that seems particularly pertinent to ask is of the relations, substitutions and combinations of different forms of intelligence, both human and more than human, and to explore how these come together in different contexts. Contributions that employ critical perspectives from either the social sciences or the humanities are welcome, but we also invite and encourage experimental and transdisciplinary approaches, including contributions from the information sciences, software studies, and articles focused on case studies of AI with stakes for Latin America, Asia, and Africa. It is time to move past an understanding of AI that borders towards viewing it as a technological sublime. In order to do so we should analyse it as a broad phenomenon that questions the integration of machinic forms of intelligence in lived settings, particularly across the relations it is generating in the Global South. CFP: Extraction: Tracing the veins A Virtual/nearly carbon neutral conference Massey University, New Zealand and Wageningen University and Research, The Netherlands June 29 – July 10, 2020 The global appetite for large-scale resource extraction is insatiable. Extraction is the basis for contemporary capitalism, and for almost every commodity we engage with, use and even consume in everyday life. Like minerals coursing through veins deep in the earth and connecting in ways unseen from the surface, extraction provides a direct link between people, economy and planet, with deeply embedded connections—material, ideological and political. Extractive industries are also responsible for half of the world’s carbon emissions and more than 80% of biodiversity loss. Now, as the environmental costs become harder to ignore, we are seeing new actions to contest and reshape extractivism, and to consider post-extractive futures. From a ban on offshore oil and gas exploration in Aotearoa NZ, to industry-led sustainable mining initiatives, and to strikes and protests against mining and oil developments through the Americas, Asia, Pacific and Africa, extraction (and activism towards it) is reshaping people’s relationships with state and market institutions, with the land and soil, and with each other. Despite the centrality of extraction to contemporary life, Anthony Bebbington (2012) wrote a few years ago of ‘the relative invisibility of minerals, oil and gas in the canons of political ecology’. While the intervening years have seen important scholarship, the extractive industries, and processes of extractivism more broadly, continues to be a fertile space for further political ecology- driven exploration. In order to re-examine extraction and its contested place in contemporary capitalism, this event calls on participants to take up the theme of Extraction, which we understand in multiple senses: extraction as the material extraction of natural resources; as a mode of accumulation central to the histories and continuation of capitalism; and as a worldview in which nature is a resource to be commodified for human consumption and accumulation. We encourage scholarly critique as well as engagement with the multiple movements that confront extraction and the communities that are practicing and imagining different systems based on regeneration. In this nearly carbon neutral conference, we invite authors from a range of backgrounds and countries to present and collaborate virtually. The conference will take place over two weeks in June and July 2020. We welcome contributors who hail from a broad range of disciplines: sociologists, artists, engineers, environmental activists, geographers, development practitioners, biologists, economists, environmental managers, anthropologists, and industry representatives to name a few. We seek contributions that cross boundaries of social/natural sciences, and that connect local and global contextual analyses. Papers are invited to address, but are not limited to, the following themes: * Theorising extractivism. Considering the environmental histories and ongoing colonial character of extractive industries; the historic and contemporary global flows and connections of resources and power. This may include: Social reproduction and extractivism; feminist political ecology of extraction; racism and ethnic identity formation in extractivist projects and processes; the financialization of commodities and extractivism; extractivism and climate change. * The future of extractive industries. How are extractive industries changing and adapting to environmental, social, or competitive pressures; What are the possibilities for sustainable resource extraction?; of moving away from extractive industries?; do calls for the end of extractive industries ignore the imperial histories of these industries, their centrality to modern life (and indeed to the technologies by which this conference is possible) and the different potentialities that extraction produces – from the politics of resignation, to increasingly strident forms of nationalism, and discourses of (resource) curses. * New forms of extraction. Beyond the traditional extractive industries, how do other forms of resource extraction – sand, intensive agriculture, deep sea mining, data mining, even ‘renewable’ resources - help us to re-theorise extractivism and its centrality to capitalist relations? * Confronting extractivism. Movements by indigenous Peoples, environmental groups, peasants, workers, etc. that confront extractivism, both in terms of place-based projects, and the political economy and nature/society dualisms that legitimate extractive practices. * Creative responses to extraction. How are artists, creative writers and activists responding to extraction? How is / can art challenge and subvert extractivism? We welcome creative presentations that work well on the online format, such as photography and art portfolios, short films, and creative writing. * Post-extraction and regenerative systems. Can we live without extraction? What does a post-extractivist world look like? How are communities around the world protecting and/or building regenerative rather than extractive systems? How do different worldviews, including Māori and other indigenous perspectives on extraction, take us beyond a materialist discussion of post-extractivism to imagining and building alternatives? Nearly carbon-neutral conference format Traditional academic conferences are responsible for a considerable amount of carbon emissions, as presenters fly from around the world to present in a single location. This also incurs significant financial costs, which often precludes researchers from developing countries and postgraduate students from attending. The Environmental Humanities Initiative at UC Santa Barbara estimated that running an online conference reduces the carbon footprint of a conference by 99%, as well as broadening their reach and accessibility. This conference will take place entirely online in June-July 2020. Contributors will not have to travel anywhere and there is no registration fee. Conference presentations will consist of material that can be submitted online as a video file. This could take the form of a webcam recording, an edited video, a PowerPoint or Prezi with recorded audio or another form of video. Each presentation should be no more than 20 minutes long. *ECREA 2020 pre-conference“Disinformation studies: perspectives to an emerging research field”* October 2 University of Minho, Braga, Portugal *BRIEF DESCRIPTION*The aim proposed for this ECREA 2020 pre-conference is to promote research that helps to define policies and strategies contributing to combat and effectively minimize the phenomena of disinformation and manipulation in the journalistic field. Thus, we intend to join together researchers who are interested in the topic, to develop this field of disinformation studies. *CALL FOR PAPERS*The main goal of the event is to develop a set of studies and policies that allow us to identify and contribute to combat and effectively minimize the phenomena of misinformation and manipulation in the journalistic field. In addition to Fake news, the study of disinformation in the journalistic field includes theoretical paradigms and empirical approaches that go beyond those: bias, concealment of facts, agenda building, strategic use of sources, mobilization of emotion, empathic media and omission of data are studied in other contexts of journalism studies helping to clarify this new phenomenon. There is a vast experience in the media effects theory, whose researchers studied, in due course, a set of phenomena of information and manipulation that today, with the necessary adaptations, constitute a corpus of examples and inspiration for new researches in different contexts. Finally, new research trends began to emerge which constitute a valuable theoretical and experimental corpus for the contemporary and present times: empathic media, recognition of patterns of reading, identification of behavior and consumption patterns with far-reaching consequences around on social, cultural and political life and considerable impact on democratic, electoral and civic participation practices. The contributions to the event should focus (among others) the following topics: - Identifying through case studies, examples of media whether revealing weaknesses or, instead, using strategies particularly directed to fight the phenomenon; - Discussing new manipulation and disinformation strategies, considering in those the study of the audience from the perspective of their manipulation through the mobilization of emotions; - Discussing a theoretical and systematic framework for the analysis of disinformation and manipulation phenomena; - Identifying the use of devices and tools that help to combat the phenomenon of disinformation; - Identifying professional practices and professional routines that help to combat the disinformation phenomena; - Identifying and proposing public policies to decision-makers that helps to minimize and fighting disinformation phenomena; - Discussing the relevance of a subfield called Disinformation studies. Abstracts of 400 words with 3 -5 keywords (excluding tables, figures, and references) must be written in English and should outline the research topic as well as the theoretical and methodological approach. The CSST Summer Research Institute supports emerging scholars in sociotechnical systems research. This much loved "summer camp" has been an activity of the Consortium for the Science of Sociotechnical Systems Research (CSST) since 2008. We welcome post-proposal doctoral students, post docs, new assistant professors and others at similar stages of career.
