Call for Industry Papers for the 26th International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA 2021) The Industrial & Practitioner Track of the 26th International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA 2021) seeks for submissions covering innovative industry database systems and applications, innovative implementation of data management technologies, and experience in applying new technologies in big data to real-world domains. The goal of this track is to introduce and discuss emerging trends and challenges with practical implications, and to facilitate interactions between academia and industry in this area. Contributions from both industry R&D groups and the academia are welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to - Advanced Analytics of Database Systems - Applications for Big Data Management - Mining Industrial & Business Dat - Cloud Computing - Web Data Management - Artificial Intelligence for Data Management - Exploitation of New Hardware Trends - Security and privacy issues for database - Explainability, fairness and accountability Authors should submit papers reporting original work that are currently not under review or published elsewhere. We will accept full papers (up to 12 pages) and extended abstracts (up to 4 pages) in LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) format. Call for Workshops for the 26th International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA 2021) DASFAA (Database Systems for Advanced Applications) is an annual international database conference, typically located in the Asia Pacific region, aiming at showcasing the state of the art and the broad range of activities in database-related research and development. It provides a forum for technical presentations and discussions among database researchers, developers and users from academia, business and industry. The 26th DASFAA conference will be held from 11-14 April 2021 in Taipei, Taiwan. Featuring a population of around 7 millions (40th most populated globally), the Greater Taipei Metropolitan Area is one of the major transportation and economic hubs in East Asia. We invite workshop proposals on topics related to database systems and their applications. The duration of each workshop is either one full day or a half day. All workshops will benefit from the registration process of DASFAA 2021 (we will have a single registration for conferences, workshops and tutorials). Paper Submission Paper submission must be in English. All papers will be double-blind reviewed by the Program Committee based on technical quality, relevance to DASFAA, originality, significance, and clarity. All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Any submitted paper violating the length, file type, or formatting requirements will be rejected without review. Each submitted paper should include an abstract up to 200 words and be no longer than 16 pages (including references, appendices, etc.) in LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) format. We encourage authors to cite related work comprehensively. When citing conference papers, please also consider citing their extended journal versions if applicable. All papers must be submitted electronically through the paper submission system in PDF only. The submitted papers must not be previously published anywhere and must not be under consideration by any other conference or journal during the DASFAA review process. If the paper was accepted, at least one author will complete the regular registration and attend the conference to present the paper. For no-show authors, their papers will not be included in the proceedings. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. *Double-Blind Review* DASFAA 2021 will employ a double-blind reviewing process, i.e., the PC members and referees who review the paper will not know the identity of the authors. To ensure the anonymity of authorship, authors must prepare their manuscript as follows: - Author's names and affiliations must not appear on the title page or elsewhere in the paper. - Funding sources must not be acknowledged on the title page or elsewhere in the paper. - Research group members, or other colleagues or collaborators, must not be acknowledged anywhere in the paper. - Source file naming must also be done with care, to avoid identifying the author's names in the paper's associated metadata. For example, if your name is Jane Smith and you submit a PDF file generated from a .dvi file called Jane-Smith.dvi, your authorship could be inferred by looking into the PDF file. Submissions must have all details identifying the author(s) removed from the original manuscript (including the supplementary files, if any), and the author(s) should refer to their prior work in the third person and include all relevant citations. It is the responsibility of authors to do their very best to preserve anonymity. How can we provide tools to educators and cultural institutions in order to provide rich digital experiences in learning and the arts to mitigate the adverse effects of social isolation? Join Aspen Tech Policy Hub [1]COVID-19 Challenge Grantees as they showcase their projects focused on [2]R[3]esponding to Social Isolation Through Education and the Arts. Following the presentations, we are thrilled to be joined by [4]Beth Harris and [5]Steven Zucker, Co-Founders of [6]Smarthistory, who will give further remarks on the projects and the current reimagining of cultural and educational institutions. [8]RSVP The projects to be presented are: Cultural Engagement To Mitigate Social Isolation by Michael Peter Edson & Dana Mitroff Silvers. COVID-19 has presented GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) and performing arts organizations with new, urgent demands to create services and programs that mitigate the effects of social isolation. But while many organizations want to accelerate their programming, most need help with training, funding, and other forms of technical and creative support to respond at the speed or scale necessitated by COVID-19. [9]Michael Peter Edson and [10]D[11]ana Mitroff Silvers joined forces to give expert coaching and support to ten organizations across the country on the accelerated development of experimental digital programs that combat the negative effects of social distancing in their communities. Suggestion Box. In the spring, schools quickly responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with their best attempts at remote learning. But for fall 2020, schools were tasked with developing tailored, equitable remote learning plans that could better support their communities’ unique needs. [12]Nidhi Hebbar and [13]Yusuf Ahmad created The Suggestion Box to provide schools with an iterative design toolkit to quickly source challenges from teachers, students, and families in order to design responsive, needs-based learning plans. The Suggestion Box enables schools to effectively prioritize their communities’ challenges, inform technology procurement, and establish a remote organizational culture that better supports teachers in their new environments. Colleagues, We have decided to extend the call by two weeks until Sept. 15 for our call for a Communication Technology and Well-Being Special Iissue. We encourage scholars to read the call below and consider submitting to the issue. JoCTEC is a growing forum for scholars in the field of communication technology, and we look forward to receiving your manuscripts. Communication Technology and Well-Being There are always concerns for people’s well-being in the current digital age. We are not unfamiliar with the worries that the usage of digital media may increase people’s stress, cause more depression, reduce life satisfaction, or elicit even more serious health problems. Therefore, technology giants, like Google, have emphasized their missions to improve users’ well-being, such as helping people form healthy habits of media use, stay away from distraction, and build balanced relationships with digital devices (see https://wellbeing.google/<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fprotect2.…>). However, not everyone agrees with the notion that people’s well-being in the digital age is in danger. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center among more than 1,000 digital media experts discovered that almost half of the respondents believed in the beneficial impact of digital media on people’s well-being (Anderson & Rainie, 2018). For example, some people argue that the increased connectiveness through social media may benefit people’s mental health. Such inconsistency could also be found in the existing scholarship of well-being and digital media. While some research has reported direct and indirect effects of using digital media on various symptoms of ill-being (e.g., Primack et al., 2017; Vannucci, Flannery, & Ohannessian, 2017), other scholars have argued that using digital media does not necessarily hurt (e.g., Hall, Kearney, & Xing, 2018) or even benefits people’s well-being (e.g., Chou & Edge, 2012). Well-being is a complicated psychological construct. It contains multiple dimensions—from people’s temporary emotional feelings to their overall satisfaction of life (Chan, 2013; Goswami, 2012). It is not our intention to affirm whether using digital media improves or inhibits people’s well-being, as there is no consensus and there will probably not be one. We attempt to carry on the conversation of well-being in the digital age from a different perspective—to understand the role of communication technology. We believe communication technology is a double-edged sword for well-being. Instead of debating whether using digital media is good or bad, a more meaningful way is to investigate how the various aspects of communication technology influence the well-being of different groups of users under distinct circumstances. It is possible that a certain group of users may exhibit improved well-being with a certain aspect of communication technology under a certain circumstance, but they may exhibit a completely opposite symptom of well-being when the technology factor or contextual factor changes. The purpose of this special issue is to provide a forum where the role of communication technology in influencing digital users’ well-being could be deeply discussed. Empirical papers, qualitative research, and literature reviews are all welcome as long as the impact of a certain aspect of communication technology on people’s well-being is highlighted. By identifying the relevant boundary conditions and underlying mechanisms, this special issue aims to forward theory building and development in the field of technology psychology. The ultimate goal of this special issue is to provide some useful guidance for digital practitioners to better protect users and promote their well-being. JoCTEC is the official journal of the Communication Technology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. This journal aims to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Topics Potential paper topics include (but are not limited to): ● The impact of using digital media on people’s emotions or moods. ● How does media multitasking influence people’s well-being? ● The role of technological features of digital media, such as interactivity and customization, in affecting people’s well-being. ● Users’ well-being in social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. ● Users’ well-being in emerging media platforms, like social live streaming (e.g., Twitch and Bilibili). ● Online gamers’ well-being. ● Information clutter/overload and well-being. ● How does digital advertising affect consumers’ well-being? ● How does “fake news” affect the public’s well-being? ● Children’s well-being in the digital age. Guideline for Paper Submission Submissions should follow the manuscript guidelines for JoCTEC. ● Prepare the manuscript using APA (6th ed) citation style, with text of no more than 9,000 words (inclusive of abstract, figures/tables, and references). ● Submit the manuscript in Word format with all author-identifying information omitted to allow blinded peer review. ● Confirm manuscript is not before another journal for consideration, and that the manuscript has not been previously published, including in a language other than English.
