This one-hour video symposium will feature ten-minute talks by three scholars of digital culture followed by small group discussions in breakout rooms and finally a 20 minute plenary discussion. This panel explores three approaches to analysing social media and other digital media, each emphasising ways in which models of the internet and digital culture need to be specific, local and situated. André Brock speaks about his recent book, Distributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures (NYU Press, 2020), which places issues of race and ethnicity as inextricable from and formative of contemporary digital culture in the United States. Brock proposes critical technical discourse analysis (CTDA) as a method that prioritizes "the epistemological standpoint of underrepresented groups of technology users" (Distributed Blackness page 6). Brock is Associate Professor of Black Digital Studies at Georgia Institute of Technology (https://nyupress.org/9781479829965/distributed-blackness/) Gabriele de Seta (http://paranom.asia) discusses his forthcoming paper "Gateways, sieves, and domes: On the infrastructural topology of the Chinese Stack", in which he extends Benjamin Bratton's model of the stack through three sociotechnical configurations to discuss the geopolitics of Chinese digital infrastructures. De Seta is a postdoctoral researcher on the Machine Vision project at the University of Bergen. Jill Walker Rettberg presents situated data analysis, which she introduced in her new paper "Situated data analysis: a new method for analysing encoded power relationships in social media platforms and apps" (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41599-020-0495-3) published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications in June 2020. Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Permanent with funding for 24 months Project: ProDem - Protests and Democracy: How Movement Parties, Social Movements, and Active Citizens are Reshaping Europe Department: Sociology, City, University of London Closing Date: 20 September 2020 The Department of Sociology at City, University of London seeks to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work alongside Dr Dan Mercea, Co-Principal Investigator on the project "ProDem - Protests and Democracy: How Movement Parties, Social Movements, and Active Citizens are Reshaping Europe". The project aims to comparatively assess the medium and long-term effects of the triple interaction between citizens, social movements, and movement parties in 6 European countries. The position, available for two years, is funded through an award by the Volkswagen Stiftung. Responsibilities The key responsibilities of the role will involve assisting the principal investigator in designing a cross-national survey to be commissioned to an external pollster. The appointed candidate will be involved in writing up the research findings together with the principal investigator and other project members, and reporting them in conference proceedings and presentations and in high-ranked academic journals. Person Specification The successful candidate will have, or be about to be awarded, a PhD in political science, sociology, communication studies or a related social science discipline, have a good command of advanced statistical analysis and survey design as well as an interest in civic or political participation, social movements, political parties, digital or broadcasting media, and a developing publication record. They will be able to demonstrate knowledge of advanced statistical analysis and survey design skills, as well as a developing publication record and the ability to conduct literature reviews and relevant background research. Kaspersky Launches 2020 Secur'IT Cup - Registration/Submission Deadlines in late October/Early November

This may interest some of you (or your students): As you may know, Kaspersky runs an annual cybersecurity competition for students and researchers called the Secur’IT Cup. Students and researchers, ages 18-26, are invited to submit research abstracts, project prototypes, or detailed project descriptions for four different tracks this year: cybersecurity in extended reality (virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality); machine learning in cybersecurity; security awareness gamification; and smart home security (with an emphasis on IoT and 5G). The deadline to register is Friday, 30 October 2020, and the deadline to submit abstracts/prototypes/project descriptions is the following Friday, 6 November 2020. The competition’s finals will be held as an online event on Thursday, 3 December 2020. Communication Technology and Well-Being There are always concerns for people?s well-being in the current digital age. We are not unfamiliar with the worries that the usage of digital media may increase people?s stress, cause more depression, reduce life satisfaction, or elicit even more serious health problems. However, not everyone agrees with the notion that people?s well-being in the digital age is in danger. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center among more than 1,000 digital media experts discovered that almost half of the respondents believed in the beneficial impact of digital media on people?s well-being (Anderson & Rainie, 2018). For example, some people argue that the increased connectiveness through social media may benefit people?s mental health. Such inconsistency could also be found in the existing scholarship of well-being and digital media. While some research has reported direct and indirect effects of using digital media on various symptoms of ill-being (e.g., Primack et al., 2017; Vannucci, Flannery, & Ohannessian, 2017), other scholars have argued that using digital media does not necessarily hurt (e.g., Hall, Kearney, & Xing, 2018) or even benefits people?s well-being (e.g., Chou & Edge, 2012). Well-being is a complicated psychological construct. It contains multiple dimensions?from people?s temporary emotional feelings to their overall satisfaction of life (Chan, 2013; Goswami, 2012). It is not our intention to affirm whether using digital media improves or inhibits people?s well-being, as there is no consensus and there will probably not be one. We attempt to carry on the conversation of well-being in the digital age from a different perspective?to understand the role of communication technology. We believe communication technology is a double-edged sword for well-being. Instead of debating whether using digital media is good or bad, a more meaningful way is to investigate how the various aspects of communication technology influence the well-being of different groups of users under distinct circumstances. It is possible that a certain group of users may exhibit improved well-being with a certain aspect of communication technology under a certain circumstance, but they may exhibit a completely opposite symptom of well-being when the technology factor or contextual factor changes. The purpose of this special issue is to provide a forum where the role of communication technology in influencing digital users? well-being could be deeply discussed. Empirical papers, qualitative research, and literature reviews are all welcome as long as the impact of a certain aspect of communication technology on people?s well-being is highlighted. By identifying the relevant boundary conditions and underlying mechanisms, this special issue aims to forward theory building and development in the field of technology psychology. The ultimate goal of this special issue is to provide some useful guidance for digital practitioners to better protect users and promote their well-being. JoCTEC is the official journal of the Communication Technology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. This journal aims to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Topics Potential paper topics include (but are not limited to): ? The impact of using digital media on people?s emotions or moods. ? How does media multitasking influence people?s well-being? ? The role of technological features of digital media, such as interactivity and customization, in affecting people?s well-being. ? Children?s well-being in the digital age. Guideline for Paper Submission Submissions should follow the manuscript guidelines for JoCTEC. ? Prepare the manuscript using APA (6th ed) citation style, with text of no more than 9,000 words (inclusive of abstract, figures/tables, and references). ? Submit the manuscript in Word format with all author-identifying information omitted to allow blinded peer review. ? Confirm manuscript is not before another journal for consideration, and that the manuscript has not been previously published, including in a language other than English. Call for PhD Consortium Proposals for the 26th International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA 2021) The DASFAA PhD Consortium provides a platform for PhD students to present their PhD proposals and to seek comments and suggestions from the PhD Consortium Committee, which consists of leading scientists and experts in the DSFAA related areas. The PhD students should be in the phase of preparing or completing their PhD thesis proposals at their home universities. All the submitted proposals will be reviewed by the committee. The accepted proposals will be included in the conference proceedings, and the corresponding authors will be invited to attend the consortium and interact directly with the committee members at DASFAA 2021. Submission guidelines A four-page proposal of your PhD research plan and progress in the Springer Lecture Notes format. Your proposal should follow the same outline, details, and format of DASFAA papers.
