*The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Oklahoma*, an iSchool affiliate, is accepting applications to our Ph.D. in Information Studies program for our 2022-2023 cohort. The program will prepare graduates to lead in creative research and teaching in academic environments, policymaking, and consulting for corporate, nonprofit, or governmental institutions. The goals of the program are: - To cultivate a community of students capable of conducting original, sustained, and effective research in the field of information studies that solves significant problems; - To foster students to become catalysts for change and leading advocates who effectively address the information needs of a diverse, pluralistic society in culturally responsible and sensitive ways; - To prepare students to educate the next generation of information professionals in a highly technological and information-based society. We are looking for exceptional students with interests in a variety of areas including, but not limited to: - *Information behavior,* including health information behavior; the use of information and technology by individuals of all ages; and scholarly communication; - *Digital youth,* including young adults and children’s interactions with technology and libraries; digital literacy and practices; makerspaces; social media; and digital ethics; - *Social and cultural studies*, including all aspects of archival research and practice; marginalized and underrepresented communities; multicultural librarianship; social justice; history; race and gender studies; and libraries and society; - *Digital humanities*, including use of computational tools and methods to explore humanities-based questions, user-centered design of digital humanities online resources, developing collaborative spaces and practices to facilitate digital humanities scholarship; · *Information systems*, including information retrieval, data analytics; informetrics; bibliometrics; and informatics; knowledge management; human-computer interaction; recommender systems; intelligent assistants, and text mining; · *Information policy*, including philosophy of information; information theory development and diffusion; and the information · industry. The University of Oklahoma is a diverse and inclusive university that offers a variety of multicultural activities and resources. The university also supports robust departments focusing on Native American Studies, Women & Gender Studies, and African & African-American Studies. SLIS is located on two campuses, in Norman and in Tulsa, and comprises a faculty with diverse research and teaching interests that can be further explored on our website at https://www.ou.edu/cas/slis/programs/phd. SLIS is a unit of the College of Arts and Sciences, and offers opportunities for students to access courses from other departments as related to their specific interests. All degree requirements must be completed within 10 years of beginning the program. Dear colleagues, We are looking for three researchers in the Global South to join our research project, ‘Digital Self-Determination for the South? Legitimacy in the Regional Internet Registries,’ funded by the Swedish Research Council. The project is based at the University of Gothenburg and led by Dr. Hortense Jongen (University of Gothenburg/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), with co-researcher Prof. Jan Aart Scholte (University of Gothenburg/Leiden University). This three-year project investigates legitimacy and legitimation in the three Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) for the Global South. These bodies – the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), and the Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC) – perform a crucial role in digital development, by overseeing the distribution of Internet numbers (IP addresses) and handling associated questions about accessible technology, content control, data protection, and cybersecurity. This project investigates how participants in these regional multistakeholder governance bodies evaluate them, mainly using mixed-methods interviews. We invite applications for three researchers to work as part-time consultants on this project. One based in Africa will focus on AFRINIC. A second based in Asia-Pacific will focus on APNIC. A third based in Latin America-Caribbean will focus on LACNIC. Job tasks include: * To help consolidate the final research design of the study. * To help design and implement the mixed-methods survey questionnaire. * To conduct survey interviews online (via Microsoft Teams/Skype/Zoom etc.) and in person at conferences of the RIRs. * To contribute to analysing the interview data. * To co-author academic publications and policy papers. Essential qualifications for the job include: * You hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field. We particularly encourage PhD candidates and other early-career academic researchers to apply. * You have a good command of English. The researcher working on AFRINIC must also have a good command of French. The researcher working on LACNIC must also have a good command of Spanish (and ideally Portuguese as well). * You are normally resident in the region of the RIR that you will be working on, though you might be temporarily living overseas, say, for studies. Applicants from low-income and lower-middle-income countries are especially welcome. * You are able to travel internationally to two conferences held by the RIRs in order to conduct interviews (in 2022 and/or 2023). Additional desirable qualifications for the job include: * You have experience researching Internet governance and knowledge of the RIRs. * You have experience with academic field research, ideally also survey methods. * You have strong oral and written communication skills. * You are a team player with enthusiasm to work on an international research team. The positions will be held part-time from 1st February 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 31st August 2024. Remuneration is by consultancy fee of around €25,000, paid in instalments. Dr. Jodi Schneider's Information Quality Lab <https://infoqualitylab.org> invites applications for fully funded PhD students in Information Sciences at the School of Information Sciences (iSchool), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Current areas of interest include: * scientific information and how it is used by researchers and the public * scholarly communication * controversies within science * potential sources of bias in scientific research * confidence in applying science to public policy Candidates should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any field (e.g., mathematics, sciences, information sciences, philosophy, liberal arts, etc.). The most essential skills are strong critical thinking and excellent written and spoken English. Interest or experience in research, academic writing, and interdisciplinary inquiry are strongly preferred. Students in the Information Quality Lab develop both domain expertise and technical skills. Examples of relevant domains include public policy, public health, libraries, journalism, publishing, citizen science, information services, and life sciences research. Examples of technical skills include knowledge representation, text and data analytics, news analytics, argumentation analysis, document analysis, qualitative analysis, user-centered design, and mixed methods. Examples of current Information Quality Lab projects: REDUCING THE INADVERTENT SPREAD OF RETRACTED SCIENCE: SHAPING A RESEARCH AND IMPLEMENTATION AGENDA (Alfred P. Sloan Foundation) - stakeholder-engaged research to understand the continued citation of retracted research, currently focusing on standards development and raising awareness of what various stakeholders across scholarly communication can do. STRENGTHENING PUBLIC LIBRARIES’ INFORMATION LITERACY SERVICES THROUGH AN UNDERSTANDING OF KNOWLEDGE BROKERS’ ASSESSMENT OF TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION (Institute of Museum and Library Services Early Career Development) - Scientific misinformation and pseudoscience have a significant impact on public deliberation. This project will conduct case studies on COVID-19, climate change, and artificial intelligence to understand how journalists, Wikipedia editors, activists, and public librarians broker knowledge to the public. We will develop actionable strategies for reducing public misinformation about scientific and technical information. USING NETWORK ANALYSIS TO SUPPORT AND ASSESS CONFIDENCE IN RESEARCH SYNTHESIS (National Science Foundation CAREER) - developing and testing a novel framework to evaluate sets of expert literature for potential sources of bias and to allow evidence-seekers to swiftly determine the level of consensus within a body of literature and identify the risk factors which could impact the reliability of the research. Dr. Jodi Schneider studies the science of science through the lens of arguments, evidence, and persuasion. She seeks to advance our understanding of scientific communication in order to develop tools and strategies to manage information overload in science, using mixed methods including semantic web technology (metadata/ontologies/etc.), network analysis, text mining and user-centered design. Her long-term research agenda analyzes persistent controversies applying science to public policy. Prior to joining the iSchool, Schneider served as a postdoctoral scholar at the National Library of Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biomedical Informatics, and INRIA, the national French Computer Science Research Institute. She is an NSF CAREER awardee and holds an Institute of Museum and Library Services Early Career Development grant. Her past projects have been funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, Science Foundation Ireland, and the European Commission. iSchool PhD PROGRAM iSchool PhD students have backgrounds in a broad range of fields, including the social sciences, sciences, arts, humanities, computing, and artificial intelligence. Accepted students are guaranteed five years of funding in the form of research and teaching assistantships, which include tuition waivers and a stipend. Additional funding is available for conference travel. Our PhD program in Information Science is the oldest existing LIS doctoral program in the U.S. with 270 graduates. While these techniques have developed separately, and have had different histories and drivers, they often overlap in the behaviors they target and techniques they use. This session investigates: - How the the traditions of communication, information and knowledge audits developed - Similarities and differences between them - What practitioners from these different disciples can learn from each other Patrick Lambe is a globally recognised knowledge management practitioner who was originally trained in Information and Library Science. Date/time: Tuesday 2 November 2021 11:00AM–12:30 PM AEDT Event title: The politics of preservation: cultural collections in dangerous times. Event provocation: "Taking something that would otherwise disappear and making it endure has consequences in the world. This makes it a political act, neither wholly good, nor wholly bad, but dangerous." A meetup organised by community member Kieran Hegarty to celebrate in the week of World Digital Preservation Day. Kieran is a PhD Candidate (Representing Multicultural Australia in National and State Libraries), at RMIT University. This event brings together artists, activists, archivists, and academics to together think through the politics of preservation with the Australasia Preserves Community of Practice. Archivists and archival scholars have increasingly recognised that archival processes are at once political, professional, and personal. Archives have consequences. The decisions made at an institutional and individual level shape collections as sources of history, accountability, and evidence. This event considers the politics of preservation. It starts with a basic provocation: that taking something that would otherwise disappear and making it endure has consequences in the world. This process is neither wholly good nor wholly bad, but dangerous. Speakers will examine those consequences and the role archivists and archival processes (including systems, technologies, and structures in which records are kept) play in shaping the political life of collections.
