(Proceedings to be published by Springer) End-user development (EUD) aims at empowering end users to develop and adapt systems at a level of complexity that is adequate to their expertise, practices, and skills. EUD may occur along the entire software lifecycle, with the purpose of making users able to participate in their artifact development, not only at design time, but also during actual use. Originally, EUD was conceived as a more general concept than end-user programming; thus, scholars proposed methods, techniques and tools that allow end users to modify or extend software artifacts, such as spreadsheets, web applications, video games, and mobile applications. In the co-called Internet of Things era, end-user development moved on to address the problem of defining and modifying the behavior of smart environments, including smart objects, pervasive displays, smart homes, smart cities, and so on. Therefore, the term "end-user development" acquired a broader meaning covering approaches, frameworks and socio-technical environments that allow end users to express themselves in crafting digital artifacts that encompass both software and hardware technology. Recent research and technological trends like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Cyber-Security, Robotics, and Industry 4.0, have contributed to renew the vision of end-user development, by providing tools and platforms that allow end users to harness the power of AI to create solutions involving Computer Vision, Image Processing, Conversational User Interfaces, as well as solutions for smart environments. Such developments lower the threshold for creating AI solutions, and expand the programmer base for such solutions, by extending AI application both for professional and discretionary use. IS-EUD is a bi-annual event for researchers and practitioners with an interdisciplinary approach to EUD, including: Human-Computer Interaction, Software Engineering, Computer Supported Cooperative Work, Human-Work Interaction Design, and related areas. IS-EUD 2021 Theme: Democratizing AI Development The 2021 edition of IS-EUD focuses on EUD for AI-based systems, where end users are called on to become end-user developers of intelligent agents, digital twins, collaborative and social robots. This edition would like to discuss the adoption of EUD in new fields, the proposal of novel EUD paradigms, and the impact of AI-based EUD in terms of user acceptability and appropriation. One of the most interesting topics in human-AI interaction is explainability of AI-based systems: research submissions presenting end- user oriented solutions to this problem will be particularly welcome. Theoretical and empirical work analyzing pros and cons of this new EUD wave, identifying requirements for end-user development of AI and acceptance of related solutions is invited. Software infrastructures and eco- systems supporting the reuse of solutions and the emergence of meta- design practices are of particular interest to this community, linking the challenges relating AI to topics central to the IS-EUD community. Regular papers, up to 16 pages, describing original unpublished research making a substantial contribution to the research field 2. Short papers, up to 8 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a small but solid contribution to the field All submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee. The review process for this category is double-blind, thus submissions must be anonymized. Accepted papers (both regular and short) will appear in the archival proceedings of IS-EUD 2021, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series, and will be presented in plenary sessions of the conference. Workshop proposals are invited (max 6 pages) aligned to the themes of the conference. Workshops provide an informal setting where participants have the opportunity to discuss specific topics in an atmosphere that fosters the active exchange of ideas. Workshops can be half day or one-day long and will be held on July 6, 2021. Accepted workshop proposals will be included in the IS-EUD 2021 adjunct proceedings, which will be submitted to http://ceur-ws.org for online publication. Submissions of regular papers, short papers and workshop proposals should indicate in the title page "Regular", "Short" or "Workshop" respectively. Demonstration and Work in Progress papers are also welcomed. A Demonstration paper (max 6 pages) should be structured according to the following: · Abstract (150 words maximum) · Topics to be covered and their relevance to the EUD community · Detailed description of the planned demonstration activity · Diagrams or screenshots (if relevant) · Supporting documentation (e.g., project website) · References Work in Progress submissions (max 6 pages) are intended for presenting preliminary results or tentative findings and position papers. The authors of accepted contributions will have the opportunity to give an oral presentation during parallel sessions. Finally, the IS-EUD Doctoral Consortium is intended to bring together PhD students working on theory and application of EUD. We particularly encourage students that are about half-way through their doctoral research to submit doctoral consortium contributions (max 6 pages) describing the topic of their PhD, their approach and a summary of their progress. Demonstration, Work in Progress and Doctoral Consortium submissions should indicate in the title page "Demo", "WiP" or "DC" respectively. Call for Shared Task Participation at CASE @ ACL-IJCNLP: Socio-political and Crisis Events Detection

Apologies for cross-posting ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- Event information detection consists of multiple subsequent steps that could drastically affect the quality of the resulted event database. Thus, we believe one must consider a complete scenario that consists of document and sentence classification as relevant or not, event coreference resolution, event information extraction, and event classification in relation to an event taxonomy, and test the results on a list of events created manually to determine performance of the state-of-the-art on this task. With this objective in mind, we organize a shared task on socio-political and crisis event detection at the workshop CASE @ ACL-IJCNLP 2021 ( https://emw.ku.edu.tr/case-2021/) Although the subtasks form a coherent flow, task participants can focus on one or more of them. Therefore, participants can choose the tasks or subtask(s) they would like to participate in. Participants will have access to all of the data for all tasks and subtasks. Any combination of these resources to achieve high performance for any of the tasks is allowed. The tasks and subtasks are: *Task 1. Multilingual protest news detection* · Subtask 1: Document classification o Does a news article contain information about a past or ongoing event? · Subtask 2: Sentence classification o Does a sentence contain information about a past or ongoing event? · Subtask 3: Event sentence coreference identification o Which event sentences (subtask 2) are about the same event? · Subtask 4: Event extraction o What is the event trigger and its arguments? We particularly focus on events that are in the scope of contentious politics and characterized by riots and social movements, i.e., the “repertoire of contention” (Giugni 1998, Tarrow 1994, Tilly 1984), which we name GLOCON Gold in our operationalization (Hürriyetoğlu et al. 2020a). The aim of the shared task is to detect and classify socio-political and crisis event information at document, sentence, cross-sentence, and token levels in a multilingual setting. The detailed description of the subtasks can be found in Hürriyetoğlu et al. (2019, 2020b). The data size for English is increased and data for Portuguese, Spanish, and Hindi are added in this edition. *Task 2: Fine-grained classification of Socio-political events* The objective of this task is to evaluate zero-shot learning event classification approaches to classify short text snippets reporting socio-political events with fine-grained event types using the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) event taxonomy, which consists of 25 event subtypes pertaining to political violence, demonstrations (rioting and protesting) and selected non-violent, politically important events. One should keep in mind that the event definitions for task 1 and task 2 are not fully compatible. *Task 3: Discovering Black Lives Matter events in United States* This task is only an evaluation task where the participants of task 1 will have the possibility to evaluate their systems on reproducing a manually curated Black Lives Matter (BLM) related protest event list. Participants will use document collections provided by us to extract mainly place and date of the BLM events. The event definition applied for determining these events is the same as the one facilitated for task 1. Data There will be training and test data for each of the tasks and subtasks. Sample data, submission formats, scripts, baseline scores, application form, and any additional information will be shared on the dedicated online repository of the shared task: https://github.com/emerging-welfare/case-2021-shared-task. Copyright of the news articles is protected by sharing URLs and code (Docker image) for retrieving text of the articles using these URLs for subtask 1. In all other tasks and subtasks only relevant portions of the articles such as only event sentences will be utilized. Training Data Task 1: This edition of the task 1 extends the data in English and includes training and test data in Spanish, and Portuguese. The format and approximate dataset sizes for each task will be comparable to the previous editions of the subtasks. However, the Spanish and Portuguese training data for subtasks 3 and 4 will be relatively less. Task 2: For the training purposes one will use a relatively large human-created/coded data set of event type-labeled short text snippets (circa 600K event records) extracted and curated from ACLED event database. The training data for this task is the "ACLED-III" event dataset described in Piskorsky et al. (2020) and available under http://cidportal.jrc.ec.europa.eu/ftp/jrc-opendata/LANGUAGE-TECHNOLOGY/2020… . Each line of the file in the corpus consists of three tab-delimited elements, namely: (a) text snippet reporting an event, (b) event main type, and (c) event subtype. In this subtask the focus is on the classification of events represented by the text snippets using one of the 25 subtypes (single-label classification problem). Task 3: There will not be any additional training data for the task 3. The systems developed for task 1 or task 2 should be used to process the test data that will be provided to the participants. Test data Task 1: Test data for subtasks 1-4 will be in the formats described in Hürriyetoğlu et al. (2019, 2020b) and %25 of the training data, which is 80/20 split of the original data. There will be test data in English, Portuguese, and Spanish for all subtasks. Data in Hindi language will be available only for evaluation of the multilingual models for the subtask 1. Task 2: Test data for this task will be around 1,000 text snippets from news, web pages reporting socio-political events and artificially created event descriptions labelled using the ACLED event taxonomy, (not from ACLED). The registered participants will be provided a single file, where each line consists of three tab-separated elements, i.e., an ID (integer), followed by a text snippet reporting an event. The system response files should have per event a line with the event ID and an event label separated by a tab. Task 3: The test set for task 3 will consists of two separate and independent datasets that are a tweet dataset (tweet IDs) by Giorgi et al. (2020) and a list of URLs (or document IDs in the target news archive) to news articles. The code that can be used to access to this data will be provided by the organizers of the shared task. Evaluation plan Evaluation is carried out on the system responses returned by the participants on the test data for each task. The evaluations will be performed on Codalab (https://codalab.org/) Each team will be allowed to submit multiple valid system responses for each task or subtask. The ranking will be based on the best result of a team. The evaluation metrics for each task are provided below. Task 1: F1-macro will be calculated on the predictions on the test data for the subtasks 1, 2, and 4. We use conll-03 evaluation script for subtask 4. The subtask 3 will be evaluated using Adjusted Rand Score for the test data in each language. There will be a separate evaluation for each subtask in Task 1 using the test data for each separate language, which are English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Hindi. Task 2: The systems will be evaluated mainly using: Precision, Recall, and Micro and Macro F-1 metrics, where the last two are the most important ones. Task 3: The evaluation data will be a list of protest events pertaining to Black Lives Matter. Each event record should include information such as place and time of a single event. Spatio-temporal correlation between the manually curated event list and the submissions will be calculated to determine the score for each submission, using an adaptation of the method used in Hammond and Weidman (2014) and applied for analysis of the dynamics of conflicts (Zavarella et al. 2020). Participation You can participate either individually or as a team. April 2021 ------------------------------------------------------------- Games educate us, challenge us, and generate novelty in how we relate to ourselves and each other. They help us learn that failure can be fun and encourage us to explore. Yet, it is worth asking ourselves: when we think about the potential of gameplay for teaching, how can we better consider the ecosystem of unique relationships between players, creators, and those who try to facilitate spaces for meaningful play? If we hope for games to reach their most meaningful potential in - and as - educational environments, starting an authentic and open dialogue of intentionality and failure is crucial. As a community, we need stories, models, practices, and theories of teaching to map out the complex ecosystem of learning. Like teaching, gameplay is environmental. The social and cultural setting, the ambitions (and biases) of designers, educators and players, and the technologies used all influence the colors, moments, stories, and characters we ultimately experience on our screens. Gameplay is at its most meaningful when we intentionally put play and its environment in dialogue, making space for learning, exploration, and engagement. However, understanding the living, complex, and dynamic intertwining between the inhabitants of this ecosystem and the actualizing of meaningful teaching has proven difficult. It is often the "thingness" of the game, not the persons involved, which captures our attention – flashy visuals and impressive technologies overshadow the unique qualities of those who gather around the screens, who create experiential environments of gaming hardware, and who code and curate the pixelating properties of gameplay. In this special issue, we want to curate a collection of accessible stories, theories, and methods of triumphs and failures involving gaming and teaching. We invite perspectives from inhabitants of the entire gameplay ecosystem: developers, teachers, museum guides, facilitators, students, policy makers, scholars, journalists, artists, and anyone else who would like to share their experiences of creating and incorporating games and game-based technologies into their teaching. We particularly invite methodological/theoretical approaches addressing the topic of teaching and games, especially those involving, new approaches as well as critical discussions and praxis involving missed opportunities and failures, as well as moments of unexpected successes and meaningful change. We encourage reflections on positive and negative experiences as sharing both is necessary if we want games to ultimately become accessible to everyone, and ensure that we create inclusive learning environments. This call is an invitation to join the conversation. In addition to the journal's traditional formats of peer-reviewed articles, we are also including a /Call for Failures and Successes, /a short-paper format focusing on real-world experiences with games and teaching (see information below). Zoe SPEAKER BIO: Veronica Barassi is an anthropologist, the mother of two daughters, and Professor in Media and Communication Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen, as well as the Chair of Media and Culture at the MCM Institute (MCM-HSG). She was previously a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths University of London, where she launched together with her colleagues the Goldsmiths Media Ethnography Group. Her work has appeared in top-ranked international journals and edited collections. Her first book, Activism on the Web: Everyday Struggles against Digital Capitalism (Routledge, 2015), was the product of years of ethnographic research (funded by the AHRC and the British Academy) on digital participation and social media campaigning. Her TED Talk on What Tech Companies know about Children has reached more than 1.6 million views. At the moment she is launching a new project titled The Human Error: AI, Human Rights and the Conflict over Algorithmic Profiling. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 'Child Data Citizen: How Tech-Companies are Profiling Us From Before Birth' is the direct result of the Child | Data | Citizen project. The book explores the datafication of children and its democratic implications. Today, for the first time in history we are tracking individual children from long before they are born. From the moment in which a child is conceived, important biometric information is uploaded on social media or pregnancy apps. As children grow up, most of their health and educational data is digitized, archived and sold by privately owned corporations. All these different forms of data monitoring and processing are just the tip of the iceberg. The picture becomes much more complex if we consider the role played by home hubs, artificial intelligence devices, and facial recognition technologies. What is becoming obvious is that children’s personal information is now being collected, archived, sold and profiled in ways that were not possible before. The book talks directly about this transformation, and critically reflects on its implications for our society and our democratic futures. The book focuses on four different typologies of children’s data: health data, education data, home life data and social media data. It has been written by an anthropologist and a parent, who spent three years working with families in the UK and the US and analyzing the complex ways in which children’s data is being produced, collected, aggregated, and shared. The author combines intimate stories about data-tracking in family life, parental consent, and ‘sharenting’ with a critical investigation into the privacy policies, business models, patents applications and sharing agreements that allow companies and other agents to mine children’s data. Barassi argues that when we think about children’s data traces the question at heart is not only one about privacy, but about how these data traces may be used by AI systems and predictive analytics to profile them throughout their lives, and define them in public, as citizens. By engaging with critical question about algorithmic bias, AI ethics and data justice, the book asks what are the social and political implications of building a society where data traces are made to talk for and about citizens across a life-time? And how can we protect ourselves when we realize that the ‘predictions’ and narratives that algorithms construct about individuals are reductionist, discriminatory and, in the case of children, pre-emptive representations of who they are? ~We are the LSE Digital Ethnography Collective, an interdisciplinary group exploring the intersections of digital culture and ethnographic methods. Hi everyone, There is one week left to submit an abstract for the Special Issue on "Critical Technical Practice(s) in Digital Research" that I’m guest editing together with Dr. Karin van Es (Utrecht University) and Dr. Jonathan Gray (Kings College London) for Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies. Please consider submitting an abstract and spread the word! Information on the CFP: The criticism of knowledge technologies has a long tradition in science and technology studies (STS), feminist studies and media studies approaches often addressing the ways in which technologies frame epistemic processes in scientific and technical settings (e.g. Latour, 1987; Latour and Woolgar, 1979; Haraway, 1988 and 1997; Chun, 2011; Galloway, 2012; Manovich, 2013). Knowledge technologies are not just the preserve of natural scientists and engineers, but also present in a wide variety of everyday and professional settings –including social and cultural research, in particular, in critical approaches to ‘Big Data’ and algorithmic systems. Importantly, these tools frame how we approach our objects and sites of study; they are not neutral, but active mediators impacting the ways knowledge is produced and disseminated. This special issue explores the contemporary relevance of the notion of ‘critical technical practice’ (Agre, 1997a) to digital research in the humanities and social sciences including internet studies, critical data studies (e.g. Iliadis and Russo, 2016), critical algorithm studies (Gillespie and Seaver, 2016), and software studies (e.g. Rieder, 2020). Philip Agre (1997a and b) coined the notion of critical technical practice (CTP) in his work on artificial intelligence, proposing the challenge of having ‘one foot planted in the craft work of design and the other foot planted in the reflexive work of critique’ (Agre, 1997b: p. 155). The issue aims to bring together, advance, and reflect on recent work on the relevance of critical technical practice(s) for scholarship, pedagogy, and public engagement around digital devices and computational tools in the context of social and cultural research. It takes up recent calls advocating the relevance of such approaches to tool development, research, and education in cultural and social studies in order to approach digital media as both objects and instruments of investigation (e.g. Dieter, 2014; Gray, Bounegru, Milan, and Ciuccarelli, 2016; Gray and Bounegru, forthcoming; Rieder & Röhle, 2012 and 2017; Van Es, Wieringa, Schäfer, 2018; Van Geenen, 2018 and 2020). The editors welcome contributions from a range of disciplinary perspectives that explore questions such as: * How can researchers organise critical inquiry with and about such digital tools, methods, and data collections? * How can devices such as network graphs, spreadsheets, scrapers, APIs, machine-learning tools, and code libraries be repurposed in cultural and social research, with a critical sensibility towards their genealogies and sociocultural lives? * How can methods be taken as sites of experimentation around the composition of collective life, between research and other areas of practice (e.g. activism, education, journalism, or policy)? AoIR2021 Conference Update

The Association of Internet Researchers has some big news to share: *AoIR 2021 is going virtual! And everyone’s invited!* Due to ongoing public health concerns and travel restrictions, AoIR has been able to renegotiate our hotel contract in Philadelphia, PA (U.S.A.). This means that AoIR 2021 WILL BE A FULLY VIRTUAL CONFERENCE that will take place 13-16 October 2021! We are extending the call for papers deadline to 15 April in order to encourage YOUR participation! As you may know, the AoIR organization had made plans for an in-person 2021 conference in order to fulfill contractual obligations in Philadelphia, PA (U.S.A.), and with the bitter recognition that many would be unable to attend in person. However, we have now been able to reach new agreements with our conference partners. We are very grateful for the team that had been working on conference organizing details in Philadelphia, and we are pleased that several of them will be able to continue to provide leadership in the planning of what is now an entirely virtual 2021 event. We’re now forming the conference planning committee for the #AoIR 2021: Independence conference. Would you like to help us as a volunteer for this event? If so, please be in touch!
