CfP: 4S 2021 Open Panel: Digital Data Collection and Migration Studies: Fostering Good Relations Across Time and Place
by Cansu E. Dedeoglu 22 Feb '21

22 Feb '21

Dear colleagues, Please consider submitting an abstract to our open panel at 4S 2021. Open Panel #59: Digital Data Collection and Migration Studies: Fostering Good Relations Across Time and Place Disparities and oppression are evident in migrants’ everyday lives, exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of international migrants in 2019 approached 272 million, with 80 million forcibly displaced worldwide. As people move, or are restricted from movement, reliance on digital tools has grown to support social, academic, economic, and health dimensions of life. Remote data collection measures to conduct research with migrants and about migration is necessary to identify problems, support communities, and understand the complex social, technological, and political-economy of the changing world. This panel will focus on the critical questions that surface when conducting remote and/or digital research with migratory communities, broadly defined. We aim to generate discussion about how or where the use of digital technology to collect research data might reproduce or interrupt colonial relations and dynamics of power. These can occur between researchers and participants, between differently situated participant groups, across research teams, or, throughout larger institutional systems of research and practice. How can we identify and better understand techno-colonial power and resistance in the adoption of digital data collection in migration research? How can digital research methods be used to foster participatory and/or anti-oppressive practices across time and place, related to race, class, gender, sexuality, age, and/or ability? How can an ‘ethics of care’ be applied to digital research? This open panel will bring together scholarship adopting digital data collection techniques, considering how to foster good relations across the axes of technology, research, power, privilege, and oppression in migration studies. Proposing ethics-related sessions for #AoIR2021
by Zimmer, Michael 22 Feb '21

22 Feb '21

Hello, AoIR! I'm writing today in partnership with Ylva Hård af Segerstad (cc'd) to see if anyone would like to join a set of panel and/or roundtable proposals for #AoIR2021 focused on research ethics. We are both on the AoIR Ethics Working Committee, but we aren't limiting our call for participants to those members. Anyone is welcome to join us, but note the deadline is coming up quickly! The Ethics group typically submits two types of proposals for an AoIR conference: - A panel of contributed papers centered around a theme of research ethics. A few have already come forward expressing interest be we have room for more participants. You'll need to provide us a 1200-word extended abstract by the end of the week (hoping there might be work already in progress...I'm not asking anyone to scrounge this up on such short notice). And we should again be in a position to publish selected papers in a special issue of the Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society. Details on that to come later. - A roundtable discussion to spark informal conversation on new issues emerging since the publication of the Ethical Guidelines 3.0, possible topics for new addenda to add to those guidelines, and really anything else. If you are interested in joining either the panel or roundtable, please email Ylva and me directly. Thanks! ~ Michael Zimmer -- Michael Zimmer, PhD Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science Marquette University michael.zimmer(a)marquette.edu www.michaelzimmer.org @michaelzimmer

Research Assistant Vacancy
by Ben Light 22 Feb '21

22 Feb '21

Hi folks, We currently have a vacancy for a UKRI / AHRC COVID Response project: Public Health Messaging during the COVID Pandemic: Dating App Usage and Sexual Wellbeing among Men Who have Sex with Men Public health measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus are translated into media messaging by organisations that target the health of different groups. Engaging experiences of the minority group of men who have sex with men (MSM), we will provide rapid evidence on the approaches and responses to these messages in relation to using digital platforms to connect for sexual purposes. We must understand MSM’s reception of these messages to impact upon policy and practice for this group, shed light on what to look for where minorities are concerned, and provide learning about COVID public health messaging that will benefit the general population. The University of Salford, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia and Birmingham City University have been awarded funds to appoint two Research Assistants to investigate this area through the UKRI’s Covid Response Call and via the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Knowledge and experience of research related to gender and sexuality in a digital context is essential for this project. Additional knowledge and experience of digital methods, survey methods, or large scale qualitative data analysis is desirable although some training will be available. For an informal discussion about the roles please contact Professor Ben Light at B.Light(a)salford.ac.uk. The post is working with myself at the University of Salford, John Mercer at BCU and Jamie Hakim, UEA. Call for Ideas—Forecast Mentorship with Francesca Bria Application deadline: February 28, 2021, 11:59pm CET forecast-platform.com/open-call/<https://forecast-platform.com/open-call/> Forecast, Mentorships for Audacious Minds Innovation economist and digital policy expert Francesca Bria is one of six mentors in Forecast’s 2021–22 edition. Bria works at the intersection of technology, geopolitics, economics, and society to make digital innovation more socially responsible. As an international mentorship program, Forecast offers artists and creative thinkers the chance to work with accomplished mentors toward bringing their projects to fruition. As a mentor, Bria is interested in working with people who seek to articulate a strategic vision of how digital technologies can facilitate the transition from today’s digital economy of surveillance capitalism and data extractivism to an alternative political and economic project based on data democracy, digital sovereignty, and citizen participation. The possible focus of the application can be on rethinking smart cities to meet citizens’ needs, using technology and data at the service of people and the green transition. “This will kickstart a creative and interdisciplinary movement that develops political, aesthetic, as well as functional standards—in sync with state-of-the-art technology, environment, and climate,” she says. “I am looking for a candidate with a strong interest in economics and geopolitics of technology, and those with a good grasp of current technological developments, especially big data, AI, industrial automation, decentralized trust protocols, distributed ledgers, and so on,” she explains. “This systemic change needs its own aesthetics, blending design, arts, and sustainability. It’s at the intersection of these worlds that many of the emerging technopolitical issues, from global trade to economic national development to the future of welfare, are to be tackled.” About the Mentorship Program For each edition, Forecast selects six different mentors, all accomplished in their respective fields. Thinkers, artistic practitioners and cultural producers working in all creative fields, anywhere in the world, are encouraged to apply with projects that could benefit from the expertise of one of this edition’s mentors and their unique approach to material and knowledge production. There is no age limit and no processing fees. The other mentors in this editions are: architect Tatiana Bilbao<https://forecast-platform.com/mentor/tatiana-bilbao/> (Mexico); experimental singer and composer Sofia Jernberg<https://forecast-platform.com/mentor/sofia-jernberg/> (Sweden); cartoonist Ulli Lust<https://forecast-platform.com/mentor/ulli-lust/> (Austria); choreographer Mathilde Monnier<https://forecast-platform.com/mentor/mathilde-monnier/> (France); and artist Emeka Ogboh<https://forecast-platform.com/mentor/emeka-ogboh/> (Nigeria). The selection process is two-tiered. First, the mentors carefully review all proposals and invite three candidates each to workshop with the mentor and present their ideas at the Forecast Forum in Berlin, taking place in July 2021. Nominees receive an artist fee to present at the Forum. Following the Forum, nominees will get several weeks to fine-tune their proposals based on the exchanges with their respective mentor, and submit the revised version by August 27, 2021. On September 1, each mentor will select one mentee. All six selected mentees will receive a production budget and a licensing and artist fee, and will have several months to produce their projects with the mentor’s support. In addition to ongoing exchanges, this period also includes a one-on-one work-stay with the mentor at an international partner institution. The final productions will be presented to the public at the Forecast Festival in April 2022. The Forum and the Festival both take place at radialsystem, Berlin. How to Apply Forecast can only accept applications submitted in English via the online application form<http://new.forecast-platform.com/open-call/apply/>. Please consult the FAQ<http://new.forecast-platform.com/open-call/faq/> and Guidelines<http://new.forecast-platform.com/open-call/guidelines/> sections on our website for more details before applying. Forecast is a project by Skills e.V. in cooperation with radialsystem. It is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. CFP - Diversifying Persona Studies: Online International Conference and Special Issue
by Kim Barbour 21 Feb '21

21 Feb '21

(Apologies for cross-posting) *Diversifying Persona Studies: Online International Conference and Special Issue* -What is persona studies? What should persona studies be? -How can the field be as inclusive and diverse as possible? -What are possible futures for persona studies research and scholarship? In 2021 we wish to ask hard questions about the assumptions and the scope of study that have hitherto grounded the field. We see this as a crucial opportunity to destabilise and to interrogate what we do and why we do it, to make space for new voices and areas of study, and to actively facilitate inclusive scholarship. *Participation in the online conference is in two parts. Accepted presenters pre-record a 10 minute research presentation and submit with an extended abstract of 800-1000 words. These will be collated into themed playlists, equivalent to a conference session. These playlists, extended abstracts and author bios will be circulated in a program to registered presenters and other participants for viewing throughout July and August. Presenters will then be invited to participate in a webinar with others from their playlist or theme. The webinar will be broadcast live and be equivalent to a panel and Q&A discussion. Those watching the livestream will be able to ask questions, through the webinar chair, both before and during the panel. The webinars will be crucial opportunities to discuss, develop, and grow our work. All presentation proposals can also be considered for inclusion in the special double issue of Persona Studies. This issue will be, as always, online and open-access, with no APCs. All topics relate to Persona Studies will be considered but we particularly encourage and welcome submissions that address: -understudied theories of persona -challenging persona studies -queering personas -activism and persona -indigeneity and persona -race and persona -disability and persona -age and persona -gender and persona -exceptional personas -contested personas -personas and the banal -persona and migration/diaspora -other considerations of difference, diversity, and justice with a persona studies framework *Call for Papers:* Abstracts: In the first instance, submit a 300-500 word abstract outlining the proposed presentation and its connection to the theme of diversifying persona studies. Please include title, brief author biography, and indicate whether you’d like to be considered for the 2021 special issue. Send abstracts to personastudies [at] gmail [dot] com with the subject heading “Diversifying Persona Studies” by 31 March 2021. Special Issue: Building on the pre-recorded presentations and the webinar discussions, Persona Studies will be issuing a special issue on the theme of Diversifying Persona Studies in late 2021. Invitations to submit full length (6000 words) papers will be based on abstracts submitted to conference. Full papers will be due 16 August 2021. Key dates: -Abstracts due: 31 March 2021 -Notification of acceptance to present, invitation to submit full paper; Registration opens: 15 April 2021 -Pre-recorded presentation and extended abstract due: 14 June 2021 -Registration closes: 5 July 2021 -Curated playlists and programs released: 5 July 2021 -Discussions with authors, livestreamed and recorded (dates indicative only): 16 July 2021, 23 July 2021, 30 July 2021, 6 August 2021 -Full papers due for peer review: 16 August 2021 -Special issue released: October 2021 Costs: This conference and webinar series is being run on a volunteer basis. We are asking a nominal registration fee for participants of AU$50 to offset the costs of administrative support. Contingent, unwaged, and student presenters can apply to have this cost waived upon notification of acceptance. Your capacity to pay will not impact your ability to participate.
