Deadline: 15 February. ********** The research project ‘Sustainable journalism for the algorithmic future’ in partnership with the Aleksanteri Institute and Swedish School of Social Sciences of the University of Helsinki invite the submission of papers to be presented at the online conference *Automation and data-driven journalism beyond the Western world: Actors, practices, and socio-political impact* *Keynote speaker: Prof. Payal Arora, Erasmus University Rotterdam* Algorithmic systems and other data-driven practices exert increasing influence over today’s societies, reshaping how social and economic systems function (Gillespie 2014). Algorithms are society’s new “power brokers,” dictating the stories that we pay attention to, the activities we participate in, and the people we connect with (Kitchin 2017). The news media is among those industries where artificial intelligence and algorithms are making strides and reordering the playing field as their use diversifies and expands. AI and algorithmic systems are implemented in newsrooms at various stages of the workflow: from smart tools that assist journalists in producing stories to the fully automated production of news articles, and from audience data analysis that informs editorial decisions to algorithmic recommendation systems that match specific content to users. On social media platforms, that form an increasingly central node in news consumption, algorithms not only generate news feeds based on our acquaintances’ actions and advertisers’ preferences (Van Dijck & Poell 2013) but also perform as actors with their own judgment (Carlson 2018). The algorithmic systems employed by social media platforms, news aggregators and other recommender systems can therefore affect the journalistic process and professional practices of media practitioners. Current scholarly debate on these issues prioritizes and builds upon empirical studies conducted in democratic, Western contexts. Much less is known about the drivers of digital innovation uptake and its socio-political impact in other political and cultural contexts, and this is problematic. Countries such as China, Russia, India, Brazil, South Africa and South Korea do implement global or introduce their own AI-driven tools in their news media This challenges the mediated reality they produce and can, in turn, affect global media agendas (e.g., in the international activities of Chinese Xinhua, Russian RT and Arab Al Jazeera). At the same time, the socio-political impact of news and disinformation amplified through social media is evident across the Global South, where moderation efforts by global platforms lag behind. This online conference strives to place the discussion of automation and data-driven journalism beyond the Western and Anglophone world. We build upon previous research (Hanitzsch et al 2019, Henkel et al 2020) demonstrating that media innovation and its adoption develop differently depending on the specific characteristics of media systems and markets. Understanding the algorithmic turn in journalism as a socially constructed process – dependent on a country’s journalistic culture, news media’s formal and informal institutions , and the societal role of media – we propose an alternative list of questions to be added to the discussion. When the main media outlets are owned or controlled by the state, who benefits from the automation of media processes, and in what way? When censorship and self-censorship are embedded into journalist professional culture, will the implementation of algorithmic systems lead to more freedom and independence of journalists, or vice versa? How does the economic efficiency promised by automation leverage the political/ideological efficiency of media institutions in authoritarian contexts? What is the importance of algorithmic systems in spreading and amplifying propaganda and disinformation in different media systems? We welcome both disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives and studies employing various social scientific methods, including comparative case-studies, ethnography, socio-legal, and STS studies. Submissions could address, but are not limited to, the following areas: · The effects of algorithmic and AI-driven tools on professional practices and routines in newsrooms; · Media interlopers and newcomers to the media industry – from IT developers in newsrooms to the role of big technological companies; · Implications of AI and data-driven journalism on the public value of news media; · Disinformation, fake news and fact checking; · The influence of global social media platforms and their algorithmic recommender systems on media outlets; · Robotised, algorithmic, augmented, computational, data-driven and other innovative forms of journalism: challenges and opportunities across the globe. *We accept two types of submissions:* · Individual paper submissions should be written in English and contain a clear outline of the argument, theoretical framework, methodology and results. Context The discussions around platform governance can be traced back to long-standing debates on the legal, social, and material structures that constitute the Internet's ordering. For over 20 years, scholars from multiple fields have sought to decipher this sprawling web of power struggles. However, the consolidation of a few digital platforms as central global spaces of interaction and consumption has re-oriented many of these endeavours, making them more specific but not less complex. How platforms create, enforce, and enact rules and technologies that affect billions of people around the world — and the ways in which different actors seek to affect those structures — is now a major focus of public and governmental attention. As a scholarly area, platform governance can be understood as a part of a longer-term project to explore the logics behind, and the consequences of, the “private mediation between Internet content and the humans who provide and access this content” (DeNardis, 2012). Work on this topic now is increasingly featured at various disciplinary conferences ranging across communication, public policy, computer science, human-computer interaction, law and technology, and science and technology studies, as well as interdisciplinary platforms like COCONET and conferences like AoIR, FAccT, or GIGANET. However, there still is no single venue that tries to bring together these broader communities into a more focused and global conversation, looking more specifically at the multifaceted and increasingly complex role that online intermediaries play in today’s platformized societies (Van Dijck et al., 2018), and research from the most affected communities often remains excluded (Costanza-Chock, 2020). In an effort to help foster this conversation and potentially spur new forms of collaboration, we are hoping to create a Platform Governance Research Network. Building upon the success of a few workshops held online in the past year, including the ‘Empirical Approaches to Platform Governance Research’ workshop at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society and the recent ‘Against Platform Determinism’ workshop at Data and Society, we are happy to announce a three-day online conference in late March 2021 seeking to bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers who produce work on platform governance across a variety of methods and fields. Research Track: Wednesday March 24 and Thursday March 25, 2021 For the first two days of the conference, we welcome abstracts of 250-500 words for papers that use different theoretical or empirical methods to answer research questions related to: -Empirical studies of platform governance in all of its forms, from the micro to the macro, utilizing a range of qualitative as well as quantitative, experimental, and/or computational methods. Suitable topics might include, but not be limited to, analyses of the practices of commercial or community platform rule-making and norm-setting, systems-based studies of automated decision-making across various types of platforms, or more focused explorations of specific topical issues such as political advertising, corporate or governmental surveillance, disinformation, and copyright. -Policy oriented analyses of private and governmental efforts to regulate platforms across the broad categories of online content, competition policy, and data protection. Proposals might include comparative policy analyses or detailed case studies of specific regulatory frameworks and approaches, and work that focuses on under-examined cases, regulatory episodes, or regions is especially welcome. -Normative, conceptual, or theoretical insights into aspects of platform governance that highlight gaps in current public or scholarly conceptions of platform governance. Submissions might evaluate various aspects of the current status quo from critical perspectives across a range of scholarly traditions, from science and technology studies to postcolonial and critical race theory, gender and sexuality studies, and Marxist political economy. -The meta-aspects of scholarly work as it relates to major technology platforms, and the relations between policy, academia, and civil society in the emerging platform governance research and policy landscape. Possible submissions might include work on the best ethical practices for collaborating (or not) with industry, on ways to secure privacy-preserving data access for researchers, or strategies used by civil society advocates to push industry and governments in more just directions. Our goal will be to not only highlight the state of the research landscape as it exists at the moment, but also to identify the major limitations facing researchers from different subfields, sparking collaborations that strive to move beyond extant limitations and silos. We encourage submissions from underrepresented groups and from a diverse range of cultural and geographic backgrounds. We are especially interested in perspectives outside of U.S. and European contexts. The precise format for presentations and panels will be determined depending on the amount of submissions received. We welcome contributions from researchers located all around the world, and will work to accommodate multiple participant timezones. Network Building Track: Friday March 26, 2021 On the final day of the conference, we will discuss how best to structure and grow a platform governance research network as well as how to make global inclusion and diversity explicit in its aims. Digital and human rights organizations have long conducted research and advocacy; yet those conversations too often occur in spaces siloed from scholarly discussions, which themselves frequently focus on Europe or North America. How could a new research network explicitly seek to remedy these issues? What are the possibilities of a stronger connection between scholarship and civil society (re: research and advocacy) on platform governance? We will host a set of conversations about how to create a robust network with staying power, how it should be organized and governed, as well as how this network could best serve the community. The call for papers is as follows: *Transgenerational Listening: Telling Stories about Global STS Programs and Formations* Organizers (listed alphabetically): Isha Bhallamudi, Anna Ma, Angela Okune Chair: Kim Fortun | Discussant: Sharon Traweek Extending ongoing dialogue about Transnational STS in recent years, this panel invites scholars located around the globe to share their work conceptualizing, practicing and extending Transnational STS in different ways. In particular, we are interested in drawing out and foregrounding student experiences in various STS programs and organizations (including formations outside of the academy) to reflect on the paradigms and programmes in which we are training and being trained. This year’s conference theme raises important questions about turning a critical eye to the oppressions maintained within technoscience, especially neoliberal university structures. Attending to the transgenerational character of collaborative relations, both within and beyond the university, sets up the possibility to dismantle violent, entrenched practices and build alliances that span age and temporal contexts. Inspired by critical university studies and radical education thinkers like Paulo Freire, Gregory Bateson, and Gayatri Spivak, we call for transgenerational and transformative listening and dialogue and are interested in learning about experiments and tactics that help build “good relations” across geographic, disciplinary and generational hierarchies. Leveraging conversations from last year’s three-part panel on Transnational STS (find abstracts at https://stsinfrastructures.org/content/open-panel-4seasst-2020-transnationa…) rather than approaching “transnational” as an ideal temporal-spatial universalism to be achieved, we question and reflect on the use value of the analytic of the “nation-state” when studying technoscientific developments across contexts. Layering such transnational sensibilities with transgenerational listening promises fresh perspectives on the character and use of STS at varying scales and locations. This panel furthers work being undertaken by the Student Section of the Society for the Social Studies of Science (6S) to develop a reference database of STS programs around the world with the aim of fostering greater transnational collaborations and network building. The panel will be chaired by Kim Fortun and Sharon Traweek will serve as discussant. Contributions may address, among others, the following questions: - How are transnational student research and collaborative relations formed and organized? What kinds of tactics have they leveraged? How do research networks set collaborative agendas and what enables them to sustain over time? - What infrastructures can support transnational and transgenerational STS collaborations, particularly those that extend beyond the academy? - What tactics do STS programs use to stay tuned to both local and transnational contexts and issues? - What pedagogical philosophies (explicitly or implicitly) orient differently situated STS programs, and to what effect? - How does transnational STS contribute to STS teaching and pedagogy? Yet despite this wide variation in technoscience communities, many continue to reproduce gendered patterns of exclusion visible in science and technology more broadly. This panel provides space for critiquing community practices and structures of exclusion that contribute to limiting who can participate in the production of technoscientific knowledge, who can contribute to decision-making around policy and innovation priorities, and who gets to design the technological products and infrastructure that shape our lives. But, in line with this year’s theme of “good relations”, it also aims to celebrate successful inclusion strategies, to identify replicable practices for enhancing community diversity, and to highlight radical experiments in relationship-building and community development. We believe that this year, of all years, this celebration of progress is particularly important. We welcome contributions–from any geographical location in the Global South or North–that explore feminist community inclusion strategies from a wide range of theoretical approaches. These could include (but are not limited to): communities of practice; space and place-making; social field theory; identity theory; affect theory; participatory design and co-design practices; and critical making. We also welcome practice-oriented presentations that are not necessarily based in theory. New CDT Report on Disinformation, Race, and Gender.

Hi all, We published a new report from CDT <https://cdt.org/insights/facts-and-their-discontents-a-research-agenda-for-…> that assesses what we know about online disinformation and identifies the main research gaps in terms of race, gender, and intersectionality. It also looks at some of the methodological problems we face when tackling these questions and how we might address them. While the research we draw on is mostly US based, we think the analysis can be relevant to other contexts too. We plan to build on these findings for future work in this area. Academic Automation, Machine Un/Learning and Artificial Non/Intelligence Over the last 70 years, computational and networked media have become deeply integrated with higher education and have slowly adopted and integrated various technologies. The newest generation of technologies engaging higher education centers around what is popularly called artificial intelligence, otherwise known as machine learning. Machine learning creates models that, in part self-design solutions that may include interaction, prediction, and other simulatable aspects. This panel invites papers that engage with questions of academic automation, machine un/learning, and artificial non/intelligence in the academic context. It seeks critical papers that examine questions around automatic grading, artificial teaching assistants, robotic instructors, other academic technologies, and the transformation of the student and professor roles concerning these technologies. This panel also seeks papers that engage these technologies in other academic roles, such as research or service as work. How are these technologies mediating different academic functions? Who benefits from these technologies? And who is privileged by them? We have to consider the roles of craft, artistry, and humanity in those roles. Is there an argument to be made for automation in the academy? Is there an argument to be made for AI/Machine learning in the academy? What kind of relations do these establish? Following Ivan Illich, should we be rethinking our relations to develop tools and systems that treat us as human, perhaps even more human than our current system? Following Virilio, what will be their accident? What are the good relations between our academic institutions, their people, and these new technologies?
