Public Service Media in Challenging Times: Connectivity, Climate and Corona. A talk by Graham Murdock, hosted and organised by InnoPSM Mon, 15 February 2021, 16:00 British Time, 17:00 CET Where? In this talk, Prof Graham Murdock will analyse public service media in the challenging times we live in. The institutions and animating ideals of public service broadcasting have been under continuous pressure for the last four decades. Advocates of marketisation have argued long and hard that they are no longer relevant or needed in a world of digital abundance and infinite choice, pointing to the increasing migration of young people to on-line platforms. These arguments continue to gain traction. A new proposal for an alternative future must place relations between broadcasting and the internet at the centre of argument. Discussions around how these relations might be organised has been underway for some time but recent developments have invested them with new relevance and urgency. 2020 was marked by a global pandemic, an accelerating climate crisis, and an explosion of direct action across the political spectrum. The processes driving these events are still unfolding presenting Public Service Media with both new challenges and new opportunities. The talk will open a conversation of how we might respond. InnoPSM - Innovation in Public Service Media Policies is an AHRC research network that facilitates exchange between academic experts and key PSM stakeholders and develops a research agenda across national and disciplinary boundaries with a view to advancing our thinking about innovative policy solutions and strategies to respond to the major digital challenges confronting PSM. This talk is part of InnoPSM’s focus on Envisioning Public Service Media Utopias.

You will learn how to gather, search, filter, deduplicate, cluster, human code, and machine-classify Twitter data using a mixed methods framework. The methods include inductive qualitative as well as deductive hypothesis testing approaches. We will discuss important legal and ethical considerations when working with Twitter data. Participants who complete the training and a short 3-question feedback survey will be granted a 2-month gratis license to pursue their own research and free project consultation as needed. Further, it investigates how the accountability of platform companies is globally demanded and contested by governments and civil society actors, and how the platforms act to reclaim their legitimacy in response. QUALIFICATIONS An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree within media and communication studies or an adjacent field in the humanities, social sciences or data sciences. The default assumption is that the appointee will hold a doctoral degree before commencing work, and have the ability to conduct independent scientific work. The candidate is furthermore expected to demonstrate a background in one or more of the following fields: digital media studies, media policy research, media industry studies, global media studies, internet research. Previous experience in the collection and analysis of digital media data and digital methods is an asset. The successful applicant should also possess appropriate teaching skills in higher education. The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include teaching for the Faculty of Social Sciences (5% of the annual workload). The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki, and to participate actively in the intellectual life of the discipline of Media and Communication Studies and the wider scientific community across and beyond the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University of Helsinki. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation. The working language will be English.
