Hi AoiR, I'm looking for an internet policy researcher to help support part-time (30 to 40 days over a period of three to four months) on an exciting new project exploring the role cities (can) play in preserving privacy in public spaces. This is a joint project between Nesta <https://www.nesta.org.uk/> and the City of Amsterdam. The project would present a good fit for experienced policy researchers, but also current PhD students and early career researchers in academia, advocacy or the public sector. The budget for this work is relatively flexible, and can be adapted depending on the level of experience of the successful candidate. We are looking for someone with demonstrable knowledge of internet policy, particularly around issues of privacy and data protection, with strong writing skills. Candidates are preferably UK or EU based, and need to be available part-time from the start/middle of April. This Special Topic aims to investigate how digital media affordances—such as human-machine and human-human interactivity, multimedia capacities, dynamic visual appeal, playfulness, personalization, real-time immersion, multilinear narrative, and so on—have been and can be used to effectively communicate health and science issues. We would like to go beyond the current discourse on fake news, mis/disinformation and online radicalization, which recognizes the malignant effects of digital media on health and science affairs, to refocus on the positive affordances of digital media—both in direct education (e.g., museums, public demonstrations, school settings) and through the media (e.g., news, film, games)—as communication tools and techniques for health and science topics. The ways that crowds have been constituted, apprehended, understood are historically, geographically, and culturally contingent. The discourses that differentiate crowds from (and conflate them with) adjacent categories of analysis, such as audiences, mobs, masses, multitudes, are similarly variable across different contexts. The purposes to which crowd control has been put have also changed over time and space, organizing the flows and stases of bodies in order to impose political, social, cultural, and economic logics specific to and co-constitutive of the contexts in which its various technologies are situated. This SHOT session seeks to develop an understanding of technologies used to control crowds of people over time. Participants will present research on historically-situated technological devices, protocols, systems, and infrastructures that modify built and natural environments in order to contain, channel, direct, arrange, expel, disperse, and otherwise direct the movements and stillnesses of human bodies. The significance of this work to the history of technology lies in concentrating discussion about the ways that technological interventions have shaped the spatial dispositions of groups of human bodies in order to sculpt the experiences of those spaces and of the crowds of people those spaces attract. Proposals engaging with any era and geographic context are welcome. The organizer is interested in placing in conversation scholars and audience members working with and curious about a range of materials and methodologies. Potential participants are therefore invited to imagine the notion of crowd control in adventurous manners. Note: A pair of panels had been constituted for SHOT 2020, which was cancelled due to public health concerns. Not all panelists are able to participate in SHOT 2021, so a small number of additional papers will be selected to round out the group. Procedure: Those interested in proposing presentations for potential inclusion in this session should kindly prepare a one-page abstract (500 words maximum) and a one-page short CV (300 words maximum) with current contact information. Games & Gaming (Social and Digital Media) 55th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) January 4-7, 2022, at the Hyatt Regency Maui For the sixth straight year, the Games & Gaming minitrack at HICSS is seeking papers that examine the social aspects of digital gaming. We feature work related to digital games and sociality that covers a variety of methods: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods papers are welcome, ranging from interviews to big data analyses, as well as theoretical papers looking at digital gaming practices in general. The Case Against Spreadsheets

The Case Against Spreadsheets https://vimeo.com/526218014 When is a Tweet not a Tweet? My answer: “When it appears in a spreadsheet, or is deleted, or the account has been suspended.” Though the video title sounds polemical, half of the argument strongly supports doing certain parts of Twitter research using spreadsheets. Indeed, Twitter is actively encouraging and training academic researchers to transform raw JSON into CSV files for research purposes. Though I find it counterintuitive to mechanically separate the data from the platform that gives it vitality beyond the moment of the Tweet, I do it all the time with Twitter metadata for a variety of research and model building purposes. However, it is the interactional, evolving, multimodal media content, and distinctive, color-rich look and feel that makes Twitter a quintessential early 21st century social media platform. No spreadsheet can capture that. The case against spreadsheets is rooted in a desire for reliable and authentic interpretation practices for digital artifacts. Tweets do not live and cannot make meaning in spreadsheets. Many researchers wait weeks, months, or years to find the time to look at the data closely. After the collection process stops, Tweets often get deleted. Accounts are suspended or deleted. Though a sophisticated (usually well-funded) research team might have a system and method for compliance checking deletions and suspensions at scale, there is no practical way to check and recheck the 10 million Tweets per month academics can now get under Twitter’s new sponsored quotas. Studying Tweet content in spreadsheets is like studying polar bears in a zoo to explain their fate on the melting ice caps. Many things are fundamentally different at the zoo. Inductive and qualitative methods require seeing Tweets in the native display. The same is true for medium to large scale content analysis, where machine-learning training models informed by features intrinsic in the Twitter display are often more robust than those trained on observations that are text-based only. I have heard the story repeatedly of researchers clicking from spreadsheets to Twitter and back to the spreadsheet to record their observation. This common practice is a lot of work on the mouse. Anyone who has done it at any scale has probably felt the carpal tunnel kick in as it requires a minimum of 4-5 clicks, perhaps more depending on labeling variations. In the video, I describe findings accumulated over ten years of studying and coding Tweets using the Twitter display, obscuring deleted and suspended content in real time, and avoiding whenever possible the computer mouse.
