*Reactionary Digital Politics: Ideologies, Rhetorics, Aesthetics* June 21-25 You are warmly invited to a five-day series of unique interdisciplinary international conversations about online politics, right-wing populism and reactionary ideologies. This series stages a range of cross-disciplinary dialogues addressing the impact of digital culture and platform technologies on the take-up and spread of radical-right politics, aesthetics and ideologies. It will feature a ‘keynote conversation’ between *Whitney Phillips* (Syracuse University) and *Quinn Slobodian* (Wellesley College) alongside panel discussions addressing topics such as reactionary ideologies, online extremism, conspiracy theory, reactionary rhetorics and aesthetics, and the politics of digital platforms. Hosted by the University of East Anglia and Birkbeck, University of London, the series is part of the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project Political Ideology, Rhetoric and Aesthetics in the Twenty-First Century: The Case of the ‘Alt-Right'. In particular we will reflect on key themes prominent in online political subcultures, such as ‘the red pill’, and key themes such as inequality, nationalism and gender. Participants -Jean-Francois Drolet (Queen Mary, University of London, author of articles on political philosophy, neoconservatism and the relationship between European and American right-wing movements) -Eve Gianoncelli (University of Oxford, former fellow of Columbia University, researching European conservatism and antifeminism past and present) -Mark Sedgwick (Aarhus University, historian whose research interests include Islam, Traditionalism, radicalization, and the history of terrorism, editor of Key Thinkers of the Radical Right: Behind the New Threat to Liberal Democracy) --June 22nd: Mapping Online Extremism and the Far Right In this session we will look at the organisation and political strategy of groups and movements on the far right, discussing how white supremacist and racist organisations operate online, their future in the post-Trump era and the politics of race and gender they promote. Participants -Bethan Johnson (Centre for the Analysis of the Radical Right, specialist in terrorist and extremist movements from the Cold War era to the present) -Annie Kelly (researcher and journalist, specialising in the study of online antifeminism and conspiracy, UK correspondent for the QAnon Anonymous podcast) -Matthew N. Lyons (author of Insurgent Supremacists: The US Far Right’s Challenge to State and Empire, expert in right-wing politics and regular contributor to the radical antifascist blog Three Way Fight) -Alexandra Minna Stern (University of Michigan, historian of ethnicity and eugenics, author of Proud Boys and the White Ethnostate: How the Alt-Right is Warping the American Imagination) --June 23rd: Reactionary Rhetorics and Aesthetics A discussion of the techniques of propaganda and persuasion deployed by the online right, including the forms and styles of language and imagery, the influence of meme culture, vlogging, and gaming. Participants -Alfie Bown (Royal Holloway, University of London, author of Playstation Dreamworld and In the Event of Laugher and editor of Post-Memes: Seizing the Memes of Production) -Leslie A. Hahner (Baylor University, co-author of Make America Meme Again: The Rhetoric of the Alt-Right) -Alex Newhouse (Middlebury Institute Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism, specialist on right-wing extremism, religious fundamentalism, online extremism) -Marc Tuters (University of Amsterdam, member of Open Intelligence Lab and author of articles on 4chan, memetic antagonism, and the deep vernacular web) --June 24th: Reactionary Politics & Digital Platforms This session will ask how the features and affordances of digital platforms shape political cultures, how their design may be facilitating reactionary radicalisation, and whether those calling for moderation and regulation are taking aim at the right targets. Participants -Deen Freelon (University of North Carolina, media scholar, data scientist, and software developer, author of over 30 articles, book chapters and public reports focusing primarily on political expression through digital media) -Bharath Ganesh (University of Groningen, political geographer focusing on new media, political communication, and cultures of hate) -Paolo Gerbaudo (King’s College London, author of Tweets and the Streets: Social Media and Contemporary Activism and The Digital Party: Political Organisation and Online Democracy) -Jessica Johnson (University of Washington, anthropologist specialising in religion, radicalisation and reactionary masculinities) --June 25th: Keynote Conversation: Whitney Phillips and Quinn Slobodian This final 'keynote conversation’ brings together experts in vernacular digital culture and in the political history and ideology of neoliberalism to discuss the culture, history, politics and political economy of misinformation today. *Whitney Phillips* has been highly influential in shaping understandings of online communities, networked communication, and the relationships between digital subcultures and mainstream media. Co-authored with Ryan Milner, her recent book You Are Here: A Field Guide for Navigating Polarized Speech, Conspiracy Theories, and Our Polluted Media Landscape, draws on theories of ecology and environment to propose means of combating misinformation, antagonism and the amplification of toxic political ideas. *Quinn Slobodian* has made landmark contributions to the disciplines of political theory and intellectual history. As the author of Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism and the co-editor of Nine Lives of Neoliberalism his work has been instrumental in mapping the contemporary political landscape. Hodkinson and Das show how the ways new fathers are positioned by society can make it hard for them to recognize their struggles as legitimate, or reach out for help. The book explores a range of different uses of digital communication by struggling fathers, from selective forms of disconnection, to the seeking out of online information or support. The authors highlight the significance even of the smallest digital acts as part of coping journeys and outline the development of tentative or hidden attempts to reach out for help, and the potential for supportive digital interactions to emerge. The book's conclusions highlight the agentic possibilities digital media might offer for struggling new fathers, while emphasizing the need for improvements in how they are prepared and supported by health services and others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CALL FOR PAPERS Elsevier Online Social Networks and Media Journal (OSNEM) Special issue on Online Social Networks and Media: human behaviour under big data microscopes Submission Deadline: June 30th, 2021 https://www.journals.elsevier.com/online-social-networks-and-media ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Online Social Networks and Media are a fundamental component of the cyber-physical convergences, representing one of the main bridges between the human behaviour across the physical and virtual worlds. Therefore, the “trails” users leave behind while using OSNEM can be mined, via big data analytics and AI, to characterize individual and social human behaviours at an unprecedented scale. Moreover, the speed at which events can be detected via OSNEM data analysis makes OSNEM a prime way to monitor the evolution of human behaviours and nowcast their development and consequences in both the physical and virtual worlds. For example, OSNEM can be used to shed light, through big data analysis, on the diffusion of COVID-19 in the real world. This special issue seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in all facets of the use of OSNEM as big data microscopes to investigate complex human individual and social behaviours. We solicit manuscripts presenting quantitative analysis and modelling based on BigData collected from OSNEM. Within this framework, topics include, but are not limited to: - Analysis of social structures via OSNEM - Analysis and modelling of information and opinion dynamics in OSNEM - Early detection of critical phenomena in the cyber and physical worlds - Prediction of (near-)future events based on OSNEM data analysis - OSNEM monitoring and analysis for the protection of users and critical infrastructures - Mobility characterization and modelling - Characterisation of users’ behaviour in smart cities - OSNEM data-driven approaches to study COVID-19 related phenomena - Pandemic tracking and control via OSNEM big data analysis - Models of individual and social behaviour through OSNEM big data during the pandemic - OSNEM users’ characterization for mass customization of products and services - Analysis of large social phenomena (e.g., political movements) via OSNEM big data - Privacy-preserving big data analytics for human behaviour characterisation - Efficient methodologies for large-scale OSNEM data collection and analysis Online Social Networks and Media is a multidisciplinary journal for the wide community of computer and network scientists working on developing OSNEM platforms and services and using OSNEM as a big data source to mine, learn and model the (online) human behaviour. Manuscripts only based on questionnaires, even focused on the reported use of social media, are outside the scope of the journal. Gender bias in popular movies: A computational approach

We analysed the frames of more than 3500 popular movies and counted faces of women and men to perform various analysis, among which a temporal analysis over 30 years of women presence on-screen, a comparison with the Bechdel Test, and various correlations with metadata. You can participate by attending in Christchurch or from your home town via Zoom. Plenary presentations will take place live. Other presentations (7-10 minutes long) should be recorded, but at least one presenter of each paper should attend their session in person or on Zoom. The conference will encourage discussion and provide time in each session for face-to-face questions and Zoom chat. At sites with multiple participants, we will help you gather and with providing morning and afternoon tea (according to what is possible while following good public health advice for the region). Because travel to Aotearoa New Zealand from outside the bubble with Australia is uncertain, we recommend international participants plan to take part remotely. In case of New Zealand entering Covid-19 level 3 or 4, the conference will move entirely online. Submission guidelines Abstracts of papers and proposals for panels are welcomed. Abstracts should be 750-1000 words in total. Please specify the area of your presentation and provide keywords to help us put together the sessions. Panel proposals should provide an overall justification of 300-500 words, name of chair/respondent and also specify how each participant will contribute (300 words per presenter). When proposing panels, please let us know the format you suggest would work best for the panel. Panels may be either face-to-face or Zoom-based. All abstract and panel proposals will be reviewed by our conference team and invited reviewers.
