I am seeking your help in recruiting participants for a study I am doing with a friend. If you could share the below text to Facebook or to others via email, that would really help us! And, of course, if you’d like to take it yourself, we’d love your thoughts! “The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on our lives, including how we experience our fandoms. Cons were moved online or cancelled. New movies came out on streaming apps at the same time as theatrical releases. Online gaming replaced in-person gaming. And people turned to their fandoms to cope with the pandemic. Krysten Stein and I are academics interested in understanding how fans have responded to the pandemic and how they see the pandemic impacting their fandoms. This questionnaire asks you to reflect on your experiences over the past year for how they relate to your fandom experiences before the pandemic – as well as your hopes for how to experience your fandom after the pandemic. The questionnaire is completely anonymous and anything you tell us will be kept confidential. We are hoping to publish the results of this questionnaire but will do our best to remove any identifying information before publishing. We expect the questionnaire to take 15-20 minutes to complete, but your time may vary depending on how much you want to tell us. This second edition is on "Responsible Use of Data". The series features prominent researchers and practitioners, whose work has made fundamental contributions in these fields. The adoption of artificial intelligence, data science, data analytics, among other techniques is predominant in many contexts and domains: often used to help us decide which items to buy, what music to listen to, and in high-stakes domains such as education, healthcare provision or criminal justice, among others. The performance of such AI systems depends both on the learning algorithms, as well as the data used for their training and evaluation. The role of the algorithms is well studied. In contrast, research that focuses on the data used in AI systems is not commonplace. Data, however, is always at their core, being a crucial component for advancing and assessing the technological field. In this seminar series on the topic of "Responsible Use of Data", we take a multi-disciplinary view and explore further lessons learned from success stories and examples in which the irresponsible use of data can create and foster inequality and inequity, perpetuate bias and prejudice, or produce unlawful or unethical outcomes. The Popular Culture Studies Journal is currently soliciting reviews for our upcoming October 2021 issue. We are seeking authors to review works on any aspect of American or international popular culture. Specifically, we are interested in reviews of recent (i.e. published within the last two years) scholarly monographs or anthologies and general interest books examining all areas of popular culture from a variety of perspectives. We will also consider older seminal pieces that deserve a second look. Alternately, you may suggest recent titles that are absent from the list. In addition, we are soliciting reviews of films, videos, websites, games, theater, or any other popular works that have been published, released, performed, or posted in the last two years. Once again, we will also consider older seminal works that deserve a second look. We only ask that reviews of popular media texts highlight how such works might be used in pedagogical or scholarly situations. If you wish to review a popular media text, you must submit a brief rationale for the relevance of the review. A short paragraph outlining why you think the text is worthy of review in the journal will suffice. Reviews should adhere to the ethos of the Popular Culture Studies Journal and be largely positive with any criticism of the work being constructive in nature. PhD students are encouraged to submit their ongoing research related to the broad topic of platform work. We especially welcome submissions related to studies that improve our understanding of the platform economy business models in promoting certain working conditions. Some topics may include:^: - Future of Work and Workers - Gender, Race and Platform Economy; - Worker-owned platforms and platform cooperativism; - Data Commons and Platforms; - Platform Governance Beyond Big Tech; - Platform Work, Decent Work, and Sustainability; - Design Justice and Platform Work; - Public Policies and Platform Work; - Action-Research on Platform Work; - Consumption of Platforms; - Workers' Organization: tech and platforms sectors; - Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Platform Economy; - The Future of Micro-Work Platforms; - Academic Work and Platformization; The doctoral symposium is designed to provide a platform for students and researchers at different stages wishing to present and receive guidance on various aspects of their research and career perspectives from established researchers and other PhD students. The symposium aims to enable PhD students to interact with each other and potential collaborators by stimulating the exchange of ideas and experiences. On the one hand, students at different stages of their research will have the opportunity to present and discuss their research questions, goals, methods and results. On the other hand, the PhD Symposium will offer training sessions on topics and skills that may be useful to future researchers. To achieve these, postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers will share their experience and lecturers will deliver training on research skills and future career prospects. Each strand of the Symposium will be coordinated by two experts who will chair the discussions and respond to the presentations. Participants' presentations should deal with the issues addressed or hypotheses tested in their doctoral research, the results so far obtained, and above all the methodology applied. Each presentation will last no longer than 5/10 minutes, followed by 5 minutes' discussion. Each session will be followed by an open discussion between the participants. Participants are expected to be available throughout the two days of the Symposium, to attend all the presentations and to take an active part in the discussions. In parallel to the Symposium, a conference track conformed by keynotes and roundtables with renowned experts on the field of platform work will be held. Eligibility The Doctoral Symposium welcomes applications from PhD students as well as early stages PostDoc researchers. PhD students in their first year of studies are welcome to participate as attendees and as far as they have a well-defined problem statement and some ideas about the solution that they would like to discuss. The Symposium is opened for participation of students and researchers meeting the requirements, worldwide. The working language of the event is English. Submission Guidelines The application should take the form of a summary of the project of no more than 300 words, indicating: * The main topic and issues, including the thesis proposed/hypothesis defended; * The methodology (theoretical tools and standpoints); * Where relevant, the corpus or primary literature under consideration; * The results obtained so far. This award recognizes the best scholarship of the Association of Internet Researchers, and highlights the breadth of work relating to the social and cultural dimensions of networked media. To be eligible for the award: - The book must be authored or co-authored as a monograph and must explore a single topic (edited collections are not eligible). - All of the book’s authors must be current members of AoIR at the time of submission (May 15, 2021). Online Seminar "The proposed EU Digital Services Act and extreme speech: What should be the role of online platforms?"

The Meijers Committee is organizing an online seminar: "The proposed EU Digital Services Act and extreme speech: What should be the role of online platforms?" Online platforms, such as social media companies, enable more speech, but people also use platforms for extreme speech. Extreme speech covers hate speech but also expressions such as incitement/glorification of terrorism, blasphemy, and denial/minimisation of gross human rights violations. While there is a relatively wide consensus on the prohibition of some forms of extreme speech, the exact boundaries between unlawful speech and speech falling within the right to freedom of expression is a matter of continuous discussion (e.g. with regard to blasphemy/defamation of religions). There is thus not a simple binary between lawful and unlawful speech. Under the current EU e-Commerce Directive, online platforms are not liable for extreme speech on their platforms unless they have knowledge of the information and do not expeditiously remove it. However, European policymakers are moving towards creating more responsibilities for online platforms to combat extreme speech. For example, the Digital Services Act as proposed by the European Commission introduces new rules for online platforms regarding online content moderation, such as rules regarding voluntary own-initiative investigations by online platforms, due diligence obligations, and legal conditions for notice and action mechanisms. This move to further regulate the role of online platforms in combating extreme speech raises critical questions. For instance, when are online platforms doing enough against extreme speech? And, are these companies in the right position to engage in the delicate balancing act between different rights and interests and between legal and illegal speech, which is normally the realm of courts? How much freedom should online platforms have in setting and enforcing their own rules on extreme speech? Should there be more legal regulation of the way their recommender systems act - which are often thought to promote extreme forms of speech? How should online platforms deal with content moderation in countries with less liberal or democratic governments (outside, but to a certain extent also inside, the EU)? This seminar looks into the approach by the Digital Services Act towards such questions and evaluates the proposal in light of the fundamental right to freedom of expression.
