Hi everyone, I hope you’re making process of your research on these difficult days. I’m Ziyu, a last semester master student from the University of Sydney. I’m recruiting survey respondents for my dissertation project! It concerns the employment of social media as a new arena for political propaganda across many countries. The topic is mostly related to internet research, international relations (also as my degree), political communication (e.g., propaganda, public perceptions, media literacy, digital information market, etc.). And any other area for who may consistently following the process of regulating online propaganda. Desired participants should be qualified as “expert” in the related fields. It’s because that I adopt the Delphi method in the study. This method is an iterative anonymous panel discussion among knowledgeable individuals that allow them to present their future forecast and exchange opinions in a safe environment. I plan to run three rounds of this survey, and currently it’s in fact running to the end of the first round. I really don’t want you to be deterred by the expectation of “expertise”. The first-round already have 11 participation who comes form 9 countries, different academia interest and discipline. However, one of them may consider dropping out in the next round. It is designed in three parts to understand your perception of the employment and development of current online propaganda; how different stakeholders have addressed these problems; and discuss a few scenarios of future online environments and regulations. It also concludes a few jargon such as “information operation” “deterrence” “grand strategy”, and requires your judgment and analysis of the political or commercial motivation of countries and internet companies. If you have more knowledge of their technical ability to control and detect propaganda information on social media platforms, that would be desirable. Dear friends and colleagues, Please, do not miss this nice initiative: As an institution, the University faces the challenge of its own survival in the 21st century. The educational ecosystem that integrates it is under pressure and some hard conditions that restrict the work of teachers and researchers. The ‘Accelerated Academy’ project is promoted by an international group of academics willing to problematize the university institution. The global aim of the initiative is to critically reflect and rethink the spaces and times that constitute the university as an institution. Edition #8 of the ‘accelerated academy’ arrives in Valencia on the 1st and 2nd October 2021 with the title: “Decelerated Academy? Enclosures, Enthusiasms, and Epidemics”. The event is sponsored and co-organized by the University of Valencia (Spain) and CRITICOM and it is open to the entire international university, academic and research community. The conference will feature the opening and closing lectures by César Rendueles and Remedios Zafra and expects to open spaces for debate and the construction of alternatives for a ‘better university’. The conference discusses academic research on the relationship between media and political processes around the world. Kim is a 2019 Andrew Carnegie Fellow. Kim’s research concerns data-driven, algorithm-based, digitally mediated political communication. Kim’s recent research project, Project DATA (Digital Ad Tracking & Analysis), empirically investigates the sponsors, content, and targets of digital political campaigns across multiple platforms with a user-based, real-time, ad tracking tool that reverse engineers the algorithms of political campaigns. Kim and her team’s research, “The Stealth Media? Groups and Targets behind Divisive Issue Campaigns on Facebook,” identified “suspicious groups,” including Russian groups on Facebook. The work received the Kaid-Sanders Best Article of the Year in Political Communication (2018), awarded by the International Communication Association. Kim testified at the Federal Election Commission‘s hearings on the rulemaking of internet communication disclaimers and presented her research at the Congressional briefings on foreign interference in elections. If so, what forms is state involvement taking, and with what consequences for the future? What challenges does state regulation pose to democratic values? Should we fear the 'splinternet'? Its rise has spawned a community (or diverse communities) of developers, investors and enthusiasts around the world. This issue of JDSR proposes to consider these communities as scenes, in the sense of collectivities who create or gravitate around specific workplaces and spaces of assembly (including digital environments), engaging in practices of visibility and invisibility. Originally theorized in popular music studies, the notion of scene has been taken up in urban studies to analyze the ways in which sociability in its public forms may settle around particular kinds of work or diverse objects of cultural, social and economic interest. In the case of what we are calling blockchain scenes, this perspective might offer insight into the spatial inscriptions and local specificities of the tech industries (through a study of such phenomena as the Berlin blockchain scene). More broadly, the notion of scene invites to consider the cultural and material shaping of blockchain networks. It suggests new ways of understanding the diverse ethical worlds, behavioural protocols and regimes of attention that compose the blockchain sphere. WHAT WE SEEK This JDSR special issue has two goals. First, it aims to bring together empirical research on the social composition, organizational forms and material settings of blockchain scenes through various research methods (onsite ethnography, web ethnography, social network analysis; etc.). Second, it seeks innovative theoretical, analytical, and critical approaches to blockchain through the lens of scene studies. We specifically encourage submissions which will engage with the notion and theory of scenes as analytical tools. The special issue welcomes contributions on the following themes, but is not limited to them: # Geographies of blockchain scenes: the cultural, social, political, urban characteristics of local and national scenes, and their transnational connections. # Sociality and organization: online and offline spaces of assembly and conviviality; workspaces and networking spaces (co-working spaces, online code repositories, conferences). # News media and information channels dedicated to blockchain, such as news websites, magazines, podcasts, social networking services or messaging apps. # Diversities in blockchain scenes: women in blockchain, BIPOC & LGBTQ+ voices, explicit and implicit structures of exclusion or inequity # Blockchain art scenes: studies of NFTs, art-related DAOs, and cultural intermediaries (e.g. galleries) dedicated to blockchain-based art. # The ethics and aesthetics of blockchain projects: the affective, performative and speculative dimensions of projects and their relationship to ideas of anonymity, strategies of visibility/invisibility and techniques of publicity or promotion. WHAT AND HOW TO SUBMIT We invite researchers to submit an English-language abstract of no more than 500 words (without references).
