Dear all, The Department of Media and Communication and the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) is looking for a Post-Doctoral Researcher (60%) / Lecturer (20%-40%) – ‘Popular Science Communication’. We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer that will both conduct research in the context of two Horizon research projects on trust in science and effective science communication funded by the European Commission and teach in our undergraduate and graduate programmes in Media & Communication. The research projects are part of the Inspiring and Anchoring Trust in Science project (started in June 2022) and COALESCE (Coordinated Opportunities for Advanced Leadership and Engagement in Science Communication in Europe). Lecture duties will be focused on contributing to both our bachelor and master level courses in communication including the supervision of student theses in this area. A PhD in Communication, Media Studies, Sociology, or within the domain of other Social Sciences is required, with demonstrated interest in science communication practices and/or public communication. The candidate is expected to possess didactic skills and an affinity for working with students. Furthermore, we’re looking for someone with suitable research and analysis skills, particularly with regards to scientific communication; Proven affinity for empirical research, as evidenced by your research work, publications, research plans and other projects; Didactic potential - teaching experience is desired; Organizational experience and skills; Proficiency in spoken and written English (Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF). CFP: ICA Preconference on the Legacies of Elihu Katz Elihu Katz (1926–2021) was a peerless scholar, colleague, mentor, administrator, and friend to many in the field of communication. His passing has left the field with an absence that calls out for remembrance and for scholarly consideration. This one-day, all-plenary preconference will create a space for scholarly exchange on Katz’s life, works, and themes—a forum, in other words, for active, critical engagement with his legacy for the field. The preconference invites presenters to explore, critique, and extend Katz’s contributions to communication scholarship. Some will situate Katz’s legacies in pertinent historical contexts; others will use his work to imagine media futures; still others will consider Katz’s many roles (teacher, institution-builder, broadcast pioneer, mentor). Some lines of inquiry presenters may wish to explore include, but are not limited to, the following topics: * considerations of journalism and the public that draw upon Katz’s configurations of Gabriel Tarde’s ideas * explorations of the promise and limitations of the idea of the media ritual * elaborations upon the idea of the two-step flow of media effects * diffusion processes in varied media and networks * the evolution and contemporary significance of the concept of media events * perspectives on Katz’s ideas that come from disparate subfields in communication, including but not limited to: interpersonal communication, organizational communication, and intercultural communication * philosophical interrogations of Katz’s ideas and research empirical studies that draw explicitly on Katz’s ideas, for instance cross-cultural readings of American television inspired by the Export of Meaning* (his co-authored book with Tamar-Liebes) * Shifts of emphasis in media studies between content providers and audiences * Katz’s place in the canon of media studies * new ideas concerning the Katzian intersection of mass communication and interpersonal communication * transpositions of Katz’s ideas into new arenas, like human-machine communication and virtual reality * historical scholarship addressing: * Katz’s involvement in broadcasting and mass media, including his role as a creator of Israeli Television * the export of Katz’s ideas to communication and media studies departments around the world * the impact of Katz’s ideas on academic fields and areas of practice outside of communication Abstracts of 400 words (maximum), in Spanish or English, should be submitted no later than 20 December 2022. Draft papers will be pre-circulated in advance of the preconference, with all participants expected to read in advance. It is imagined that if we find the right technology and deploy it in effective ways then previously intractable challenges might soon become a thing of the past. But what if digital education is part of the problem? To the extent it rests upon a continued proliferation of digital devices, ever expanding use of digital data and the embedding of ‘always on’ hyperconnectivity there are serious issues to be raised about the sustainability of digital education. Far from providing a route towards a fairer future the field risks exacerbating climate breakdown. Is it possible to reorientate digital education towards a more sustainable future or are these problems inherent in the digitalisation of education itself? Should we be trying to develop more sustainable forms of individual practice or are these distractions from political questions which need to be addressed collectively? The Pranava Institute <https://pranavainstitute.com/> is inviting contributions for its new blog on Unpacking Deceptive Design, which is part of The Ethical UI/UX design manual project <https://www.design.pranavainstitute.com/> funded by the University of Notre Dame and IBM’s Tech Ethics Lab. Deceptive design or ‘dark patterns’ are manipulative or deceptive practices built into user interfaces by developers that have the effect, intentionally or unintentionally, of obscuring, subverting, or impairing consumer autonomy, decision-making, or choice. They are often carefully designed to alter decision-making by users or trick users into actions they did not intend to take. These deceptive design practices are built into user interfaces across multiple online experiences today. Shopping and eCommerce platforms nudge and manipulate users to share more data and buy products, social media uses deceptive design to increase user engagement to unhealthy levels, and financial apps use deceptive design to trick users into signing up for products that could be harmful. The 'Unpacking Deceptive Design Blog' is a collaborative space for researchers and interested individuals to contribute from diverse disciplinary perspectives and fill knowledge and awareness gaps on the issue. The blog invites contributions reflecting on deceptive design practices as it intersects with competition in digital markets, data protection and privacy, consumer protection online, financial security, human rights, and social security across jurisdictions. We actively encourage contributions focussing on exploring deceptive design from non-western epistemologies, deceptive designs in non-western countries, and the impact on first-generation internet users. We are also happy to announce that contributions will be paid thanks to the support of the University of Notre Dame-IBM's Tech Ethics Lab. A standard honorarium of $200 will be offered to authors. Call For ICA 2023 Panelists: Platforms, Power and a Theory of Friction

Hi All, I’m co-organizing a panel for ICA 2023 that positions the removal and/or creation of friction through policy, design and business practices, as an orienting lens to understand platform capitalism and platform power. We are looking for two more panelists and are particularly interested in scholars who study labor surveillance, datafication, climate change and smart cities. Abstract Technology platform companies, from Amazon to Uber, require the constant flow of user data to maximize profits and fuel their growth. The dependency of their business models on these uninterrupted data flows creates incentives for platform companies to remove any and all frictions that impede their accumulation of capital, including by facilitating user data surrender and obscuring data collection practices through user-friendly design and opposing policies that may regulate or disrupt these data flows. Communication scholars have begun to explore how technology platforms seek to maintain fluid marketplaces through such "frictionless" practices and strategies. For example, Popiel & Sang (2021) examined how platform companies lobby for "frictionless regulations" like public-private partnerships that naturalize platform business models, while privileging their business considerations over democratic values. Vasudevan (2020) examined how platforms employ "frictionless design" to addict end-users to platforms by deploying deceptive interactive features. In this panel, we build upon recent scholarship about friction and frictionless practices employed by technology platforms by examining the construct in the context of labor surveillance, datafication, platform regulation, and climate change. By situating “friction” within a more expansive theoretical context, this panel will offer scholars an adaptable, orienting construct for examining platform power. More broadly, this panel will provide scholars a meaningful lens through which to understand how platform capitalism in the current epoch seeks to erode socio-technical and political frictions that are crucial to a functioning democracy. ICA Panel CFP: Online LGBTQ Discourse + Rhetoric

Hello from Nanditha Narayanamoorthy and Yvonne Eadon, postdoctoral research scholars from the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life (CITAP) at UNC Chapel Hill. We are looking to convene a 6-paper panel for the LGBTQ Studies Interest Group at ICA 2023 in Toronto. The panel seeks to bring together papers that examine online discourses and rhetoric around LGBTQ+ communities on social media platforms from a variety of disciplines, methodologies, and cultural contexts. We invite papers that not only investigate the ways in which virtual queer communities converge and communicate online in the creation of personal and collective identities, but also how they are broadly represented on platforms through the rhetoric of violence, surveillance, conspiracy theories, and far-right nationalism. Emphasizing questions of power, discursive world-building, and social inequalities in relation to digital LGBTQIA+ communities, this panel seeks to foster conversation among scholars around the world by centering queer and trans communities, interrogating and broadening the extant narratives around online discourse on queer and trans experiences. We are particularly interested in papers that bring intersectional perspectives to the discursive study of sex, sexuality, gender, and intimacy using de/anti/postcolonial, and queer/trans/non-binary frameworks. Papers that take an intersectional and comparative approach from the Global North and South are particularly welcome.
