The 2022 AoIR Student Paper Award has been awarded to Vincent Obia for his paper, “Matrix of Dependence, Postcolonialism, and Social Media Regulation in an African Context. <https://www.conftool.org/aoir2022/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_sessio…> ” The paper was highlighted for its focus on the very important topic of digital media regulation but also for its clear-eyed application of a postcolonial lens. It emphasises the importance of situating policy analysis and policy itself in its domestic context but also the importance of understanding that context as bound within flows of dependency, domination, and autonomy. Congratulations also go to Alaina George and Nicholet Deschine Parkhurst whose paper, “Infrastructures of Care in NDN Spaces: Mutual Aid as a Form of Radical Relationality <https://www.conftool.org/aoir2022/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_sessio…>,” was Highly Commended. Their paper not only does the important work of showcasing Indigenous modes of knowing but does that within a wider intersectional feminist approach, offering the kind of radical decentring of colonial thought that is so vital to developing a just research agenda. The Department of Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks to build on our 50-year tradition of critical and community-engaged media and communication research with this hire in the area of race, media, and communication studies. We are looking for an Associate / Full Professor with a record of intellectual leadership and engaged scholarship examining the politics of race in media and communication, communication and racial justice, and/or race and representation in popular culture. We seek a colleague who can advance our department's mission to center issues of racial justice in communication research, collaborate with our diverse and international faculty and students, and extend our core strengths in critical cultural studies and media and communication studies. The Department of Communication is one of the most internationally diverse faculty in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Of particular interest are candidates who draw from critical bodies of theory and epistemologies of Black, Latino/a/x, Asian, Indigenous, and Ethnic Studies when studying media, communication, and racial politics in the United States. We also welcome candidates who draw from intersectional perspectives of feminist, queer, and postcolonial theory and those who study racial politics in transnational perspective. We are open to diverse methodological approaches and community engaged scholarship. Particular areas of expertise may include (but are not limited to) the following: • Race and representation in film, television, and social media • Systemic racism in media, creative, and tech industries • Racial equity and critical data studies • Racial justice narratives, digital activism, and strategic communication of social movements • Black digital cultures, creativity, and media-making • Queer and transgender politics of race • Race and Blackness in performance studies • Race and racial discrimination in health communication • Mediated solidarities, joy, and conflicts between/among communities of color • Racially targeted disinformation, hate, and digital harms • Race and mediated communication in geopolitics • Postcolonial and decolonial studies, and transnational and diasporic media • Critical approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion in media and communication studies Requirements The candidate is expected to have a PhD in Communication or related fields. This is a mid-career or senior-level position, and the candidate will be reviewed for tenure during their first year of appointment. They are expected to have at least 5 years experience in a tenure-track professorship post in Communication or related fields, with a record of excellence in research, teaching, and outreach. The violence that day and the tech industry’s response to the tsunami of polarizing content triggered a major public debate over how social media and tech companies manage their platforms and services and the impact of content moderation policies on polarization, extremism, and political violence in the United States. One big question is: How did niche social media sites geared toward far-right audiences, like Parler, contribute to polarization around the 2020 presidential election and to what extent did Parler and other platforms factor into the January 6 attack? Based, in part, on an early assessment of a cache of an estimated 183 million Parler posts publicly archived after Parler was temporarily deplatformed, we present an analysis that offers unique insights into online and offline early warning signs of the potential for election-related violence in the year-long run up to the Capitol attack. We also discuss the ethical and methodological challenges related to this work. He is also a Senior Research Fellow for the Future Frontlines program at the New America Foundation. His research uses tools like natural language processing and network modeling to understand organizations, communications, and cultural trends, especially disinformation and strategic influence. He also studies the specific contributions libraries can make to artificial intelligence models and intelligent systems. Simeone received his MS and PhD in English at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Illinois Informatics Institute at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Dr. Shawn Walker is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Arizona State University and a Senior Research Fellow for the Future Frontlines program at the New America Foundation. He received his PhD in Information Science from the University of Washington Information School. His research focuses on mis and disinformation and online resistance circulating in social media during social movements, protests, and elections as well as the related challenges of collecting, analyzing, and preserving data from social media platforms. BERKELEY CENTER ON COMPARATIVE EQUALITY & ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW 10th ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2023 Hosted by Utrecht University Utrecht, the Netherlands: 28-30 June 2023 CALL FOR PAPERS Equality Law in Context: Illuminating Intersections in Search for Global Justice The conference will provide a space for critical reflection on how to move equality law forward. The conference organizers particularly welcome submissions that seek to illuminate intersections between equality law and other fields of law as well as other disciplines (e.g. sociology, political theory, political economy, history, gender and queer studies, economics, etc) and/or intersectional inequalities (e.g. racism, sexism, class inequality, ableism, etc). There have been many calls to tackle deep-seated structural and intersectional discrimination in recent years, but so has the strong backlash against these campaigns. With these realities in mind, the conference will consider possibilities for crafting effective short-term and long-term responses. These responses will incorporate a global perspective. Paper proposals may address the broader themes described above or any area of equality and anti-discrimination law. Specific conference sub-themes are: * Multidisciplinary equality law * Effective mainstreaming and enforcement * Intersectionality and structural forms of discrimination * Covid-19 and inequality in times of crises * Opposition to equality projects * Digital equality * Disability rights * Racial justice * Gender equality * LGBTQI equality * Climate justice and just transitions * Financial equity and living wage * Sexual harassment and violence * Global systemic racism We plan to hold the conference on site in Utrecht. We will stream keynotes and make some of the recordings of the presentations available online. Instructions for submission We are now inviting submissions for workshop presentations and panels on topics related to these themes, and aspects of equality law more generally. We encourage applications from PhD/SJD candidates, postdoctoral fellows and individuals with significant practical experience of working to advance equality. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and clearly indicate objectives and methodology. Please include a brief biography (max. 100 words, suitable for publication on the conference website), including affiliation and your email-address. Panel submissions should include a title and an abstract for the entire panel as well as titles, abstracts, and author information for all papers. Each panel should contain between three and four papers. The panel can be submitted by any of the authors. Please note that initial abstracts must be submitted in English, but we may be able to make some accommodation if you wish to present in another language at the conference. Please indicate this in your submission. Timeline * The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 November 2022. * The abstracts will be reviewed by the conference committee and invitations to present will be sent out in January 2023. * Either detailed outlines of the presentation, presentation slides or full papers will be due on 1 June 2023. The Department of Communication Studies (CST) at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Communication Studies with an emphasis in media. We are a large and robust department that prioritizes excellence in teaching. We offer a student-centered curriculum which emphasizes the importance of undergraduate research. ABD will be considered. The degree must be earned by the personnel review held in the spring of the first year. • Ability to teach existing course offerings including Emerging Media & Communication Technology, Media Industries & Audiences, Multimedia Production, and Media & Society. • Ability to utilize our new Center for Media Production and Research in teaching. The Center offers students high-caliber media production equipment, virtual reality experience, and opportunities for user-experience and other forms of digital media research. • Ability to teach the Communication Studies department’s basic course, Communicating Effectively, and contribute to teaching our research core curriculum, which includes Introduction to Communication Studies, Communication Theory, Research Methods, and Senior Research Project. • Knowledge of how to support diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching. • Minimum 2 years of university-level teaching experience. • Active research agenda and commitment to departmental and university service. Preference will be given to candidates with experience as the instructor of record. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop new courses for our growing Media Studies major and minor, as well as our interdisciplinary Digital Media Studies and Design minor. Faculty teach on a 9-month contract at the university load of 4 courses per semester and may have options for summer and winter sessions if interested.
