Call For Chapters Routledge International Handbook of Online Deviance Project Description The aim of the Routledge International Handbook of Online Deviance is to be a compendium of the current state of sociological and criminological scholarship on online deviance. There is increasing scholarship in different disciplines on social interactions transformed by the growing importance of internet use. Some use the reference to cyber, others use references to digital and online behaviour, and there are disciplines claiming that there is no division between online and offline interactions in connected societies. In this editorial volume, online deviance is understood in the broadest sense: as [online] behaviour that differs from the normative behaviour of a significant number of people in society, or behaviour evaluated negatively by others. This handbook will be a corrective to the lack of focus in multidisciplinary objectives on online harms and will feature chapters that are focused on deviant social phenomena occurring due to internet use in diverse contexts. By focusing on different networks, structures and techniques, this book aims to provide an extensive collection on deviant actions/behaviour and highlight contextual differences, including the role of textualities, language and culture. Beside the legal, social, political and economic connotations of online deviance, we invite contributions from a wide range of disciplines and in different formats. The editors are seeking chapters for these broad topics (see below for a more detailed explanation of topics): 1. Theories and Concepts 2. Methods and Data 3. Gender, Sex, and Sexuality 4. Violence and Aggression 5. Lies and Deception 6. Communities and Culture 7. Theories and Concepts - This section is devoted to exploring broad theoretical perspectives (e.g., conflict perspectives, feminist perspectives), distinct theories (e.g., labeling theory), or specific concepts of theoretical import (e.g., anomie, moral panics). Chapters can summarize the current scholarship about a theory or concept, compare competing theories, or problematize how a theory or concept is currently being used. While traditional theories and concepts are welcome, the editors are particularly interested in new or novel ideas that help us understand aspects of online deviance. 2. Methods and Data - The chapters in this section will explore issues of method - the forms of legitimate data, types of data collection, and data analysis. We would like to move beyond the simple qualitative/quantitative distinctions, and toward including philosophical discussions of ontology and epistemology, processes of data collection, and different types of data analysis. The editors would appreciate chapters that describe and demonstrate to the reader novel or emerging methods of inquiry, such as the collection and exploration of Big Data. 3. Gender, Sex, and Sexuality - The chapters in this section will present empirical research on expressions of gender, sex, and sexuality in online spaces that are considered deviant. Chapters are welcome from all perspectives including, but not limited to postmodern, critical, symbolic interactionist, and positivist. Of particular interest are studies about the experiences of transpersons online. Also of interest are studies exploring various manifestations of sex work. 4. Violence and Aggression - The chapters in this section will highlight empirical research on types of violence and aggression including cyberbullying, cyberstalking, flaming, hate speech, and trolling. Of particular interest to this section are articles that explore the degree of hate speech towards disadvantaged groups and the use of social media as a form of vigilantism (i.e., "cancel culture".) 5. Lies and Deception - Deception that leads to financial loss such as romance scams and the sale of counterfeit goods can be met with a response from law enforcement. The studies in this chapter will focus on lies and deception such as misrepresenting oneself online, the manufacturing of moral panics by political actors, and the spreading misinformation and disinformation. 6. Communities and Cultures - The chapters in this section will describe empirical research on online communities and networks that can be described as deviant by wider society. Given the prevalence of online radicalization, the editors have a keen interest in studies that explore international and domestic terrorists, white supremacist groups, and anti-feminist "manosphere" groups. 7. Regional Perspectives - Although the digital environment is characterized by global networks, nations and geographic regions have differing customs, laws, institutions, and histories. There may be some issues that are uniquely pressing or phenomena uniquely present in a given geographic area. The chapters in this section will describe empirical research of online deviance rooted in a particular area of the globe. Best, David Arditi Fast Capitalism - General CFP Fast Capitalism<http://fastcapitalism.com/> is an academic journal with a political intent. We publish reviewed scholarship and essays about the impact of rapid information and communication technologies on self, society and culture in the 21st century. We do not pretend an absolute objectivity; the work we publish is written from the vantages of viewpoint. Our authors examine how heretofore distinct social institutions, such as work and family, education and entertainment, have blurred to the point of near identity in an accelerated, post-Fordist stage of capitalism. This makes it difficult for people to shield themselves from subordination and surveillance. The working day has expanded; there is little down time anymore. People can 'office' anywhere, using laptops and cells to stay in touch. But these invasive technologies that tether us to capital and control can also help us resist these tendencies. People use the Internet as a public sphere in which they express and enlighten themselves and organize others; women, especially, manage their families and nurture children from the job site and on the road, perhaps even 'familizing' traditionally patriarchal and bureaucratic work relations; information technologies afford connection, mitigate isolation, and even make way for social movements. We are convinced that the best way to study an accelerated media culture and its various political economies and existential meanings is dialectically, with nuance, avoiding sheer condemnation and ebullient celebration. We seek to shape these new technologies and social structures in democratic ways. Our submissions are always open. We invite contributions on these and related issues. Some papers will stick close to the ground of daily life and politics; others will ascend the heights of theory in order to get the big picture. The work we publish is both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, bridging the social sciences and humanities. Culture and capital are keywords. We are also interested in cities, the built environment and nature, and we encourage people who theorize space to submit their work. Conference: Global Fact 9 (international factchecking summit with academic track) Date: 22 June 2022 Location: Oslo, Norway Submission deadline: 18 February 2022; notifications by 25 March 2022 Global Fact 9 is the largest annual fact-checking summit, bringing together journalists, researchers, government and industry representatives, and of course, fact checkers. As the profile and community of this form of journalism grows in the face of misinformation, Global Fact provides an important venue for sharing best practices, networking, and identifying coming challenges. This year, Global Fact will be held at Oslo Metropolitan University in Oslo, Norway. Global Fact 9 is currently planned as an in-person event, from June 22 – 25, 2022. (The academic track has the potential to include hybrid online and in-person sessions.) The first day of the summit, 22 June, will be devoted to an academic track, with several invited panelists and speakers addressing topics such as: * Best academic practices in—and potential contributions to—this developing field. * Fact-checking in the context of misinformation and increasing polarization. * Directions of fact-checking, e.g., towards more debunking and tech partnerships. * (Socio)technical tools–old, new, and yet-to-be-developed–in fact-checking. * Fact-checker safety–mental, emotional, and/or physical. * Collaborations between different types of actors, based on topics, aims, regions, languages, etc. * Regulation efforts aimed at big tech and platforms, and the impact on fact-checking partnerships and funding. * Media and information literacy in the age of COVID-19 and declining institutional trust. * The importance of publicly available data (e.g., national statistics, platform insights) and other resources for fact-checkers. * Fact-checking in the context of oppression–e.g., how it can be conducted and disseminated. In addition to the invited presentations, we are reserving a portion of the academic track for lightning round presentations. These will entail discussions of your work, at whatever stage—conceptual, in progress, or finished—in a shorter time frame. Overview In an era that has been termed one of post-globalization (Flew, 2018), there is considerable debate around governance of the global Internet. In particular, multistakeholder approaches which seek to bypass nation-state governments in the name of global "netizens" have been critiqued as lacking real regulatory capacity to transform the behaviour of digital platforms towards public interest goals. This one-day symposium will explore questions of sovereignty in the digital environment from international and comparative perspectives. We are particularly interested in papers which address: ·The ‘regulatory turn’ towards digital platforms and comparative insights. ·How digital platforms with an international footprint navigate competing jurisdictional rules and regulations; ·The rise of “tech nationalism” and the promotion of digital “national champions”; ·New forms of regulation being developed by national governments and the European Union; ·The role of quasi-self-regulatory entities developed by companies themselves (e.g. Facebook Oversight Board); ·Proposals for reform of international internet governance institutions; ·The relationship between global digital platforms and questions of sovereignty and accountable governance; ·The impact of COVID-19 on digital platform governance.
