I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication

Online Media and Global Communication Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication Digital media technology has accelerated the spread of false or misleading information, particularly amid the pandemic of COVID-19, making it a global social concern and an emerging research topic for various social science disciplines. To date, a variety of scholarship has investigated the various forms of misinformation, their spreading patterns, methods of detection and dispelling, the causes and effects of misinformation, etc. However, more research is still needed to address the global dissemination of misinformation. We are soliciting extended abstracts or full papers for a variety of presentations at our symposium, “Misinformation and Global Communication,” to be held on March 12, 2022, in Shanghai. The symposium will take a hybrid format, consisting of in-person and virtual meetings. We welcome innovative and original research proposals addressing the theme of our symposium from all disciplines, methodologies, and professions, including case studies, quantitative and qualitative research, data and network science, etc. Some possible topics include but are not limited to: * Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on social media * COVID-19 misinformation * The effects of misinformation on audience * Comparative Study on fake news * Fact-checking * New methodologies to study misinformation * The ethic of misinformation * Digital literacy on misinformation * Misinformation inventions * The cultural implications of misinformation * Other related topics Please submit an abstract or research proposal with a minimum of 500 words for your presentation. OMGC is a new free open-access English language referred journal published quarterly by De Gruyter and sponsored by Shanghai International Studies University. Communication is a time-space relationship that can be and has been mediated by language. Time-space has always been a matter of contestation in the logic of the organization of life in human societies. Overcoming distances and controlling time are at the heart of our concerns. The concept of development is linked to the human capacity for agility in the production, circulation and distribution of goods and knowledge, and depends on the control of time-space. With this in mind, time-space is a socio-historical notion that is at the heart of human culture. The wheel, the navigation, the press, the steam engine, the train, the plane, the telegraph, the cinema, and the internet have at their core the same principle: to approach, communicate, exchange, circulate, produce and deliver. The codes of digital technologies are based on time-space compression. Language as an objective aspect of the human capacity to symbolize, represent, plan, and create has a robust base in the digital age, dependent on ores, optical fiber, cables, plastic, glass, water etc. At the same time, the mathematical phrases and instructions - including those instructions tied up with what is referred to as "artificial intelligence" (AI) - are the symbolic elements that have become tools for organizing, managing, and controlling time-space and everything that is or can become digitalised. In this second decade of the 21st century, we are faced with mounting challenges. The capacity of infrastructure favors the creation of large companies that offer us the dimension of instantaneity, connectivity, transparency and sharing. In return, these companies extract our data. The logics of financial capital and platform companies have in the data flows equivalents of gold, silver, and oil mines - that is, an inexhaustible supply of wealth as long as there is life. Controlling this wealth in the context of a new geopolitics challenges national states. Plurilateral global governance bodies are also challenged. Unemployment grows and the gap between rich and poor has never been greater. Science creates and capital appropriates: from the right to vaccines to internet access, inequality advances. The responsibility for solving these problems has been foisted on the individual who must be an entrepreneur, overcome difficulties, be resilient, and exercise individual freedom to choose the right, the best, and compete to occupy the podium of the successful. What communication is this? What is this development? What science is this? What barbarism is this? What to expect from the future? Future is another dimension of time to be controlled, another portal to be supplanted by technoscience. The future that promises long life, perhaps eternal youth, space travel, other worlds. Science fiction or the future of science? There are so many possible questions. Oppression, exploitation and expropriation are constitutive elements of contemporary capitalism intensely integrated into the development of systems called "artificial intelligence". Human life, in this context, is considered a valuable source of data extracted, controlled and manipulated by powerful corporations for the purpose of serving their own economic and political interests. The practices of transforming human experiences into data are advancing rapidly, promoting evident asymmetries of capital. Forms of resistance to this phenomenon, however, are possible and can offer alternatives that promote the common good, citizenship and democracy. This special issues aims to bring together research and studies focused on the interrelationship of communication, technology and society and that contribute to this debate. CFP Special issue of Fastcapitalism Academic Automation, Machine Un/Learning and Artificial Non/Intelligences, Over the last 70 years, computational and networked media have become deeply integrated with higher education and have slowly adopted and integrated various technologies. The newest generation of technologies engaging higher education centers around what is popularly called artificial intelligence, otherwise known as machine learning. Machine learning creates models that self-design solutions that may include interaction, prediction, and other simulatable aspects. In other words, it is an attempt to automate certain processes. This special issue invites papers that engage with technological automation, machine un/learning, and artificial non/intelligence in the academic context. It seeks critical papers that examine questions around automatic grading, artificial teaching assistants, robotic instructors, other educational technologies, and the transformation of the student and professor roles concerning these technologies. This call for papers also seeks papers that engage these technologies in other academic roles, such as research or service. How are these technologies mediating different academic functions? Who benefits from these technologies? And who is privileged by them? How will these technologies change undergraduate education or graduate education? It asks authors to consider the roles of craft, artistry, and humanity in those roles. Is there an argument to be made for automation in the academy? Is there an argument to be made for AI/Machine learning in the academy? What kind of relations do these establish? Following Ivan Illich, should we rethink our relations to develop tools and systems that treat us as human, perhaps even more human than our current system? Hello, The Centre for Internet and Society is happy to announce the fifth edition of the Internet Researchers’ Conference (IRC22)! The conference will be held online in April, 2022. For the call for proposals, and more details, see: https://tinyurl.com/irc22 See below for a description of the theme of this year's conference: The ‘home’ has been a key line of defense in efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19. Public health recommendations and governmental measures over the last two years have relied on the construction, and assumption, of home as a familiar, stable and safe space. As we continue to come to terms with, and find ways to reorient the disruption of life, being at home has acquired many new meanings. What has it meant to be at home, and what is home? What is and has been the role of the internet and digital media technologies in navigating the contours of a changing ‘normal’? How have/can digital technologies help overcome, or exacerbate existing social, economic and political challenges during the pandemic? What forms of digital infrastructure—tools, platforms, devices and services—help build, sustain and alter the notion of home? The conference will focus on three sub-themes as they relate to the notion of home - violence and care, labour, and movement-building. CfP Frontiers / Interrogating the Design of Smart, Sustainable, and Socially Just Urban Spaces: A Look at Institutions, Places, and Values

People experience the city in different ways. These experiences shape how people view the city and the values they seek to draw from this space. Increasingly, people are experimenting with big data and digital tools within the context of community-based public goods provision as a way to realize values such as sustainability and social justice. In such a way, they claim their right to the city. These experiments can be transformative. There has been a groundswell of scholarship on local efforts to become smarter in support of urban experiments. However, our knowledge of these experiments’ design features remains scant. Design shapes interactions within all collective endeavors. When spatial, institutional, and value-based design principles are weak or missing, urban experiments may fail. This is why this Research Topic’s special focus is on the question of spatial, institutional, and value-based design in urban experiments. Smart urban development seems inevitable for the future of our cities, but who should decide what that future should be like and whose interests smart urbanism serves? Politics is inherent to urban development, and there is increasing evidence that political struggle lies at the heart of urban transformation. From LGBTQ+ activism that claims a right to public space to youth climate protests, political struggle is a call to action. These movements are the flints that spark urban experiments. However, we have scant knowledge of these experiments’ governance, the co-evolution of institutions that guide them, and ways in which they are designed to render value. Research indicates that it is challenging to translate and implement public values in smart city technologies. This Research Topic explores the dynamics between socio-technological processes - particularly, value-based design - that shape urban space and how citizens can participate meaningfully, highlighting how institutional design principles can be leveraged without incurring associated risks. This Research Topic calls for original papers, empirical as well as theoretical, that use the analytical lens of institutional and/or value-based design principles to explore and connect current popular, normative, academic, and political notions on urban commons, such as in the “smart”, “inclusive”, “resilient”, "participatory", "citizen-centric", “sustainable” and “just” cities. The overall goal of this collection of papers is to bring together contributions on the role of institutional and value-based design principles within complex urban systems from different academic disciplines and perspectives. THE FINAL ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF PEER PRODUCTION #15 TRANSITION http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-15-transition Issue editors: Panayotis Antoniadis & Mathieu O’Neil JoPP #15 TRANSITION features six peer-reviewed articles exploring diverse aspects of transitions in peer production projects. Each article is accompanied by an additional piece or ‘complement’ which addresses the same topic in a non-academic manner. This experimental format aimed to explore the transitions, permutations and transformations of research on peer production. Reflections about change also inform the future of the Journal of Peer Production itself. It was collectively decided that the correct transition path for the Journal is to close its circle: this will be the last issue of the JoPP. This final issue will serve as a vehicle to strengthen the JoPP community and encourage its members to collectively learn from the past, and support each other in our future endeavors. To that end, the issue comprises two dedicated sections: ‘Reflections on the past’ and ‘The future’ which will remain open for contributions by members of the JoPP community until the end of 2022, the final year of the Journal of Peer Production. In early 2023, a closing ceremony will mark the end of this era. More detail on the content of the issue – in its current incarnation – and the plans for its expansion can be found in our Editorial Notes. We look forward to your feedback and contributions.
