New Book: DESIGNING FOR DEMOCRACY

Hi all, Forgive the self-promotion, but I recently published a book that many of you may be interested in: Designing for Democracy: How to Build Community in Digital Environments (Oxford UP, 2022). How should we "fix" digital technologies to support democracy instead of undermining it? In Designing for Democracy, Jennifer Forestal argues that accurately evaluating the democratic potential of digital spaces means studying how the built environment--a primary component of our "modern public square"--structures our activity, shapes our attitudes, and supports the kinds of relationships and behaviors democracy requires. While many scholars and practitioners are attentive to the role of design in shaping behavior, they have yet to fully engage with the question of what structures are required to support democratic communities--and how to build them. Forestal closes this gap by providing a new theory of democratic space. Drawing from a wide range of disciplines, including architecture, psychology, and the history of political thought, she argues that "democratic spaces" must be designed with three environmental characteristics--boundaries, durability, and flexibility--that, taken together, afford users the ability to engage in fundamental civic practices. Through extended analyses of Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, Forestal shows precisely how well these digital platforms meet the criteria for democratic spaces, or whether they do so at all. The result is a more nuanced analysis of the democratic communities that form--or fail to emerge--in these spaces, as well as more concrete suggestions for how to improve them. Two Ethics Working Group roundtable proposals for AoIR2022

Hello, AoIR friends, On behalf of the AoIR Ethics Working Group, I am working on two roundtable submissions for AoIR2022 in Dublin. The first is an open roundtable discussion to learn how the AoIR community has applied the Ethical Guidelines 3.0 in their research, help identify gaps and limitations in the current version, and brainstorm additional topical companion resources as we think about version 3.1 and beyond. The second is a more focused roundtable that engages with the ethical complications of data collection under data protection regimes (such as GDPR) and aims to bring together academic, industry, and policy folks. We have space for a few more primary contributors, so please email me directly (michael.zimmer(a)marquette.edu) if you'd like to help finish up the submissions and be listed among the primary roundtable discussants. Humlab Talk Queer in AI: Making AI Queer-Inclusive and Prioritizing Grassroots D&I Activism 30 mars, 8.30-9.45 (CET), ZOOM (pre-sign up required) Trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important topic because trust in AI systems and their creators has been lost. Researchers, corporations, and governments have long and painful histories of excluding marginalized groups from technology development, deployment, and oversight. As a result, these technologies are less useful and even harmful to minoritized communities. We argue that any AI development, deployment, and monitoring framework that aspires to trust must incorporate both feminist, non-exploitative participatory design principles and strong, outside, and continual monitoring and testing. We additionally explain the importance of considering aspects of trustworthiness beyond just transparency, fairness, and accountability, specifically, to consider justice and shifting power to the disempowered as core values to any trustworthy AI system. Creating trustworthy AI starts by funding, supporting, and empowering grassroots organizations like Queer in AI so the field of AI has the diversity and inclusion to credibly and effectively develop trustworthy AI. We explain what Queer in AI is, the mission of the organization, and the initiatives that Queer in AI runs (from community education and empowerment to policymaking and advocacy). We then leverage the expert knowledge Queer in AI has developed through its years of work and advocacy to discuss if and how gender, sexuality, and other aspects of queer identity should be used in datasets and AI systems and how harms along these lines should be mitigated. Based on this, we share a gendered approach to AI and further propose a queer epistemology and analyze the benefits it can bring to AI. We additionally discuss how to regulate AI with this queer epistemology in vision, proposing frameworks for making policies related to AI & gender diversity and privacy & queer data protection.
