About the Program The ICFP fellowship program supports individuals conducting research to examine restrictions on the free flow of information by repressive governments. In particular, ICFP fellows track Internet interference practices and investigate emerging means of overcoming censorship in repressive environments - the countries, regions, or areas worldwide where Internet freedom is threatened or under attack. Efforts that focus on investigating the security and privacy of tools used in these contexts are also supported. The ICFP program offers flexibility for candidates with fellowships available for three, six, nine, or twelve months in duration. This allows for the support of a wider range of proposed efforts, from those that are relatively short-term to projects that are larger in scope. The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $5,000 along with stipends for travel and equipment. Independent Study with Organizational Support All ICFP fellows are based with a host organization, which can be academic departments, for the duration of their fellowship term. Host organizations should demonstrate the ability to assist the applicant in carrying out the proposed scope of work. Applicants can propose any host organization on their application as long as sufficient justification for the selection is provided. For example, if you’re proposing to work on a project studying how misinformation spreads online, then your proposed host organization should be equipped to provide expert guidance on this topic. OTF welcomes host organizations from non-academic organizations as well as those that are based outside of the United States. We are inviting you to submit your abstracts on algorithms, temporalities, and futures. See the CfP below. *Call for Papers: Blackboxed Futures: Multiple Temporalities of Algorithmic Technologies (Online Symposium, March 19)* Algorithmic technologies are nowadays proliferating in various sectors of the economy and, more generally, in society. Yet, while their widespread development already occupies several areas of contemporary life, their material configuration often remains opaque and difficult to comprehend, especially when it comes to how algorithms shape the futures of people and societies at large. Often, algorithms and AI technologies are conceived by their users and creators as “magic” that is beyond comprehension — an understanding that has a range of political and cultural implications for society (Campolo & Crawford, 2020) and has been consequently recognized in the theorizations of economy and politics (Pignarre and Stengers, 2012). Questions of vital scholarly and political importance emerge – what future(s) do algorithmic technologies offer for society, who is included in them and left out, how they can be scrutinized and resisted? Do we witness a “temporal stasis in an age of automated media” (Andrejevic, Dencik & Trere, 2020) or a “speculative time-complex” (Avanessian & Malik, 2016)? In this symposium, we invite scholars from critical media, cultural, science and technology studies, as well as adjacent fields, to further reflect upon the imagined futures of algorithmic technologies and multiple temporalities enrolled in their continuous enactment. We suggest focusing on algorithmic temporalities by thinking of them both in terms of related discursive practices and issues of algorithmic design. Addressing both theoretical and empirical matters of algorithmic temporalities, this symposium aims to shed light on how our thinking about time vis-a-vis algorithmic technologies spreads — or meets resistance — in different social and political contexts. The symposium will take place online on *March 19*. *CALL FOR PAPERS: Drones in Society: New Visual Aesthetics* 8th and 9th September 2022, Halifax Hall, Sheffield, UK Drones are an increasingly important social phenomenon. Their use has the potential to change the way people see the world in the same way other technologies have, like smartphones and the internet. Generating questions that go beyond safety and security issues, their widespread use opens new debates on the relationship between media and mobility (Hildebrand, 2021), material practice (Howley, 2017), and vertical power (Kaplan, 2018). Drones are the latest technological advancement to have a significant impact in the world we live in, offering opportunities for new forms of visual communication, culture and practices. We invite the submission of proposals for an interdisciplinary conference on these topics, ‘Drones in Society: New Visual Aesthetics’, which will be held on 8th and 9th September at Halifax Hall in Sheffield, UK. This 2-day conference will be hosted by the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield. *The deadline for submission is 9th of April 2022.* The conference is concerned with the role of drones in society and the way in which they are contributing to new visual aesthetics. The conference invites interdisciplinary research, reflection and critique on topics including (but not limited to) the following: - *People’s perspectives on drones (and their data): *surveillance, ethics and privacy issues in domestic and commercial uses. - *New visual perspectives*: the creation of new visual content (drone art and amateur uses). - *Drone regulations: *potential gaps in regulating domestic and commercial drones, future perspectives. - *Current uses and future applications: *the implementation of drones in society. - *Drones and vertical power*: the uses of drones in war zones, activism and humanitarian activities. (Apparently ICANN's choking point had been the knowledge that there ha been a parallel NFT registration of the domain, something one would think be immaterial.) Dear AoIR Folks, The Curtin University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child is currently advertising for a Research Fellow (0.5 FTE, 3 Year Fixed Term, Level B) working with me in the Connected program of the Digital Child Centre. The Research Fellow will largely be occupied with examining the impact and reach of child and parent influencers across the globe, as well as questions of regulation, policy and best practice. Analysis will consist of engaging with social media and qualitative and quantitative scales, policy documents, online conversations of various forms, a range of online platforms, as well as using a range of techniques and methodologies for analysing online interaction and impact. In addition to its six established Standard Tracks, and reflecting its three-regions model this year, the Data for Policy 2022 conference highlights “Ecosystems of innovation and virtual-physical interactions” as its theme. Distinct geopolitical and virtual-physical ecosystems are emerging as everyday operations and important socio-economic decisions are increasingly outsourced to digital systems. For example, the US's open market approach empowering multinational digital corporations contrasts with greater central government control in the Chinese digital ecosystem, and radically differs from Europe’s priority on individual rights, personal privacy and digital sovereignty. Other localised ecosystems are emerging around national priorities; India focuses on the domestic economy, and Russia prioritises public and national security. The global South remains underrepresented in the global debate. The developmental trajectory for the different ecosystems will shape future governance models, democratic values, and the provision of citizen services. In an envisioned ‘metaverse’ future, boundaries between physical and virtual spaces will become even more blurred, further underlining the need to scrutinise and challenge the various systems of governance. The Data for Policy conference series is the premier global forum for multiple disciplinary and cross-sector discussions around the theories, applications and implications of data science innovation in governance and the public sector. Its associated journal, Data & Policy, published by Cambridge University Press has quickly established itself as a major venue for publishing research in the field of data-policy interactions. Data for Policy is a non-profit initiative, registered as a community interest company in the UK, supported by sustainer partners Cambridge University Press, the Alan Turing Institute and the Office for National Statistics.
