Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. internet studies book list

Hi all — I emailed the list earlier in the year asking if anyone knew of any bibliographies of 1) books, specifically 2) in the field of Internet Studies, broadly defined. The reason for my question was I’m asking my students to write a book review of a monograph in the field for my class <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rshp8enFUQ2_vfuSHN88twwQXxXiDRYx_NTPU2i…> this spring, and wanted to give them a resource so they could find something in their interest area. A few people responded asking me to let them know if I found anything, but I didn’t, nor could my departmental librarian. There are plenty of syllabi for a topic area across many forms of scholarship (articles, books, films, etc), but nothing I could find for books, specifically. So my TA and I built a Google Form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_WaVIdg9Rh--nodpMWYKpLSj03zxouh5…> to help us make one. If you enter in the ISBN number of a book, it queries the Google Books API and populates the results to a public spreadsheet here <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ik83LPyjjqQLfWim53CEObnXdiVDqSkGJ0l…>. It pulls in the book description (from the publisher) and the subject areas (from the LoC), so that it is (reasonably) searchable. My TA and I just started entering in some books from our syllabus and some books that popped into our head, but I wanted to send it out to AoIR in case anyone here wants to contribute or use the list. If you want to contribute — please do! We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible, and you should definitely blast your own books into here, or those of friends, or whatever. It’s a work in progress and we’ll be figuring it out as we go along but hopefully it’s a helpful resource for someone (beyond just my students this term). Best, — Chris

Online Media and Global Communication Call for or Papers: Symposium on Misinformation and Global Communication Digital media technology has accelerated the spread of false or misleading information, particularly amid the pandemic of COVID-19, making it a global social concern and an emerging research topic for various social science disciplines. To date, a variety of scholarship has investigated the various forms of misinformation, their spreading patterns, methods of detection and dispelling, the causes and effects of misinformation, etc. However, more research is still needed to address the global dissemination of misinformation. We are soliciting extended abstracts or full papers for a variety of presentations at our symposium, “Misinformation and Global Communication,” to be held on March 12, 2022, in Shanghai. The symposium will take a hybrid format, consisting of in-person and virtual meetings. We welcome innovative and original research proposals addressing the theme of our symposium from all disciplines, methodologies, and professions, including case studies, quantitative and qualitative research, data and network science, etc. Some possible topics include but are not limited to: * Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on social media * COVID-19 misinformation * The effects of misinformation on audience * Comparative Study on fake news * Fact-checking * New methodologies to study misinformation * The ethic of misinformation * Digital literacy on misinformation * Misinformation inventions * The cultural implications of misinformation * Other related topics Please submit an abstract or research proposal with a minimum of 500 words for your presentation. Decisions for the conference presentation will be communicated on February 25, 2022. OMGC is a new free open-access English language referred journal published quarterly by De Gruyter and sponsored by Shanghai International Studies University. It aims to publish high quality, innovative and original research on global communication, especially in the use of global online media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Weibo, WeChat, Wikipedia, websites, blogs, etc., in an effort to make theoretical contributions under the contextual scenarios of and based on practices of online media and global communication, particularly in but not limited to the Global South. Communication is a time-space relationship that can be and has been mediated by language. Time-space has always been a matter of contestation in the logic of the organization of life in human societies. Overcoming distances and controlling time are at the heart of our concerns. The concept of development is linked to the human capacity for agility in the production, circulation and distribution of goods and knowledge, and depends on the control of time-space. With this in mind, time-space is a socio-historical notion that is at the heart of human culture. The wheel, the navigation, the press, the steam engine, the train, the plane, the telegraph, the cinema, and the internet have at their core the same principle: to approach, communicate, exchange, circulate, produce and deliver. The codes of digital technologies are based on time-space compression. Language as an objective aspect of the human capacity to symbolize, represent, plan, and create has a robust base in the digital age, dependent on ores, optical fiber, cables, plastic, glass, water etc. At the same time, the mathematical phrases and instructions - including those instructions tied up with what is referred to as "artificial intelligence" (AI) - are the symbolic elements that have become tools for organizing, managing, and controlling time-space and everything that is or can become digitalised. In this second decade of the 21st century, we are faced with mounting challenges. The capacity of infrastructure favors the creation of large companies that offer us the dimension of instantaneity, connectivity, transparency and sharing. In return, these companies extract our data. The logics of financial capital and platform companies have in the data flows equivalents of gold, silver, and oil mines - that is, an inexhaustible supply of wealth as long as there is life. Controlling this wealth in the context of a new geopolitics challenges national states. Plurilateral global governance bodies are also challenged. Unemployment grows and the gap between rich and poor has never been greater. Science creates and capital appropriates: from the right to vaccines to internet access, inequality advances. The responsibility for solving these problems has been foisted on the individual who must be an entrepreneur, overcome difficulties, be resilient, and exercise individual freedom to choose the right, the best, and compete to occupy the podium of the successful. What communication is this? What is this development? What science is this? What barbarism is this? What to expect from the future? Future is another dimension of time to be controlled, another portal to be supplanted by technoscience. The future that promises long life, perhaps eternal youth, space travel, other worlds. Science fiction or the future of science? There are so many possible questions. Oppression, exploitation and expropriation are constitutive elements of contemporary capitalism intensely integrated into the development of systems called "artificial intelligence". Human life, in this context, is considered a valuable source of data extracted, controlled and manipulated by powerful corporations for the purpose of serving their own economic and political interests. The practices of transforming human experiences into data are advancing rapidly, promoting evident asymmetries of capital. Forms of resistance to this phenomenon, however, are possible and can offer alternatives that promote the common good, citizenship and democracy. This special issues aims to bring together research and studies focused on the interrelationship of communication, technology and society and that contribute to this debate. ***CALL FOR PAPERS*** THEME: Domesticity and Persona (Volume 8, Issue 2) ISSUE EDITORS: Dr Kim Barbour (University of Adelaide) and Dr Michael Humphrey (Colorado State University) JOURNAL WEBSITE: https://ojs.deakin.edu.au/index.php/ps Revolutions political, social, personal, technological, and beyond have changed the way many people relate to the word “domestic.” At the same time, the feeling of home is still very familiar to many. This became readily evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, as homes became the scene for a far more expansive set of life activities. For some, rather than crossing beyond a private domain to the shared world, the shared world peered into a slice of millions of private lives, prepared neatly for the eye of a webcam, or interrupted by passing pets, partners, and children. For others, the external gaze was resisted, views carefully obstructed to preserve the sanctity of the domestic sphere. For still others, the domestic space became (or continued to be) a place of surveillance, isolation, imprisonment, and repression. In the midst of these changes, both new and old, we are calling for theoretical, critical, empirical, and/or creative responses that investigate the persona in domesticity. Which personas flourish in domestic light and which shrink? Who expands or constricts the boundaries of domesticity? What freedoms and/or restrictions await, and for whom? How do we understand domesticity and personas in a time of collapsed contexts and multipurpose spaces? The Association of Internet Researchers calls for submissions for the 2022 AoIR Dissertation Award. To be eligible for the AoIR Dissertation Award, a PhD dissertation in the area of internet research must have been filed in the 2021 calendar year. Nominations (self and other) must be received by 1 May 2022. All methods and disciplines are welcome. Submissions Details: - A nomination letter that explains why the dissertation is deserving of the award - How it contributes to internet research - A PDF copy of the dissertation should be emailed to dissertationaward [at] aoir.org - The graduate or their supervisor must be a member of AoIR (by 1 May 2022) - Self-nominations are permitted - Filed in 2021 (meaning fully defended, all edits complete, filed/published with a 2021 copyright) The recipient of this award will be announced mid-year 2022.
