Many spaces on the internet have been important for the development and spread of the conspiracy theory, including "dark" social media sites like 8chan/8kun and more widely used sites like YouTube and Facebook. Using a novel dataset of more than 100 million tweets related to QAnon collected between July 2018 and the present, this talk will explore patterns and themes present in this activity. This dataset reveals a range of activity from vigorous support for the ideas promoted by "Q" to the most strident opposition and dismissal of those ideas. Along the way, I describe some of the specific methodological challenges that arose in this project. Finally, I note some of the ways that this dataset and the analyses we are performing can inform public conversations about conspiracy theories and "alternative" knowledge communities. Sam Jackson is an assistant professor in the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity at the University at Albany, which also houses UAlbany's iSchool. His research focuses on antigovernment extremism in the U.S., conspiracy theories, extremism online, and contentious activity on the internet more broadly. He earned his Ph.D. from the Social Science Doctoral Program in the Maxwell School in 2018; while completing his Ph.D., he was also an affiliate of CCDS and worked on the Illuminating project. His book, Oath Keepers: Patriotism and the Edge of Violence in a Right-Wing Antigovernment Group, was published by Columbia University Press in 2020. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to share our call for submissions for the ECREA pre-conference workshop on “Visual Politics & Protest - Current Methodological Challenges” (online, 6-7th October 2022). Call for submissions: ECREA pre-conference workshop on “Visual Politics & Protest - Current Methodological Challenges” Call for submissions War streaming on Instagram, propaganda in press photography, refugee activism on TikTok? - Recent European crises have shown images and videos as essential tools of communication in politics and protest, a trend mirrored in the increasing use of visuals in research methodologies. Visual data can capture practices of visual, performative or non-verbal communication, text-image relationships, the development of visual formats, notions of aesthetics, as well as underlying meanings of symbols and codes. Extant research has since captured different elements of visual politics and protest, including: social history (e.g. protest photography), political commentary or alignment (e.g. through memes or overlays), social cues in political communication (e.g. GIFs, filters, or emoji), visual activism practices (e.g. culture-jamming, sousveillance video coverage, flesh-witnessing), and visual forms of information documentation and distribution (e.g. infographics). Even so, new creative practices have at times challenged research practices, for example with regards to image authenticity and appropriation in mis- and disinformation campaigns (e.g. deepfakes), platform affordances in new visual formats and spaces (e.g. short videos on TikTok), (mis)interpretation and visual (il)literacy in communications, trust in image data as factual evidence, and opaqueness in the production of visual materials. These critical debates have been particularly contentious in the arena of politics and protest, where visuals have been seen to shape political opinion and discourse, electoral campaigns, war coverage, and Covid-19 data visualisations. In response to these trends, the ECREA Visual Cultures section is inviting submissions to the online pre-conference on “Visual Politics & Protest” with a focus on epistemological and methodological challenges, taking place on 6th and 7th October 2022 (= 2 weeks prior to ECREA 2022). The pre-conference workshop will include a keynote by Dr. Jing Zeng (University of Zurich), a series of lightning talks, a panel discussion (including speakers Dr. Stefania Vicari, Dr. Shana MacDonald, & Dr. Jing Zeng), and hands-on discussion rounds with a specific focus on epistemological challenges in research on visual politics and protest. Topics of interest We are looking for lightning talks on challenges encountered in research on visual politics and/or protest, which will be allocated to thematic panels. Towards encouraging lively discussions, we are not looking for entire paper proposals, but focussed submissions that outline the challenge along with examples (in written, visual, or other creative forms). On a broad level this may include (but is not limited to): - New methodological challenges in visual or multimodal data collection or analysis - Platform- or format-specific challenges in conducting visual research on politics and protest - Methodological approaches for capturing visuality or visual cultures surrounding politics and protest - Challenges in embedding visuals or visuality with textual, audio, or sensory materials - Issues in interpreting and/or quantifying visual data - Emerging approaches to visualising image or video data - Suggestions for the ethical treatment of visuality in politics or protest - Approaches in analysing specific political visual practices and/or phenomena - Epistemological discussions of the role of the visual in politics, protest, or social movements - Theorizing visual issues (example: visibility through aesthetics and visuality) Submissions should ideally either discuss new challenges, present in-depth illustrations/ examples of specific challenges, or introduce new approaches or nuances. Submission Please submit a 200 word description of your challenge in researching visual cultures or materials, along with your contact details on this Google Form link <https://forms.gle/YWAUJK7RDjHvo6Fe8> (200 is the maximum incl. references). Proposals can be submitted until 1st June 2022 at 23.59 CEST. Descriptions should be written in English and contain a summary of the challenge that will be presented, as well as a notion of the reflections or approaches that are taken or recommended. The description may follow a conventional abstract structure, but is not bound to it. We encourage creative, unconventional, and work-in-progress submissions, particularly from early-career scholars. The addition of supplementary visual data such as a poster or data excerpt is optional. The submissions should represent a specific issue or challenge encountered in the participant’s visual research. We are aware that not everyone will be able to use Google services due to regional restrictions or privacy concerns. In those cases we invite participants to submit directly by email vppecrea(a)gmail.com. The email should contain following information: paper title, participant first and last name, country of affiliation, affiliation, career stage, email contact, names of co-authors, a 200-word description of the challenge, 1-2 visual materials (PDF, Word, or jpg) if applicable (this is optional), and indicate if you would like to be considered for the special issue. During the workshop, these challenges should be presented as short presentations (7-10 minutes) in panel groups with an adjoining discussion. These presentations do not need to follow conventional presentation formats (creative and purely visual presentations are encouraged). Please note that multi-author submissions are very much welcome, but due to the short nature of lightning talks we ask that only one person (i.e. the submitting author) presents. Details on the presentation format and full programme will be released in due time. Workshop follow-up Post-workshop, a summary (e.g. in the form of a co-authored “living syllabus on visual politics and protest research'') will be created and circulated amongst the participants and the wider public. ITA researcher Astrid Mager will present the results of her FWF project and bring together leading search engine researchers to discuss Google critique, regulation, and alternatives. With Google being front and center, search engines have been exposed again and again for not offering objective results. It has been proven that Google placed its own products on valuable “front-page real estate”, and notions such as the “Googlization of everything” underline its hegemonic position. It has a business model based on user profiling dubbed surveillance capitalism. More recently, Google’s algorithms have been found to output biased and discriminatory results. Building on this critique, what interventions are necessary and what are possible alternatives? How has regulation, specifically of Google and surveillant platforms more generally, responded to these developments? What else is to be done about the hegemony of Google, its vast personal data collection, its discriminatory results, and the governance and accountability of engines and other online platforms? Finally, how can we pave the way towards more open, just, and independent search engines and infrastructures in the future? This public event brings together leading search engine scholars to discuss these questions from a European perspective. On the one hand, it is the infrastructures that support learning, and on the other, it is also how we learn about infrastructures (writ large). First, exploring the infrastructures of learning helps to develop answers to the question, "what infrastructures do learning require in our contemporary world?" The second inquires how we learn about infrastructures and all that they entail. The tension between these meanings highlights one of central problems of infrastructure studies - Infrastructure studies as a field has the thesis of Invisibility. Infrastructure fades from our vision and memories, and accordingly fades as a research topic as it becomes naturalized and culturalized to become part of the background operations of our everyday life; simply put, infrastructure becomes invisible in everyday life. We all face the duty of making infrastructures visible and concrete to our respective audiences in order to legitimize the infrastructures and our practices surrounding them. For over 20 years, learning infrastructures have transformed dramatically toward a more plural set of practices, methods, systems, and tools. Some more liberatory, and some not - some democratic, others lean authoritarian. The accidental experience of learning infrastructures is that like everything else they are part of the technica/social/hidden/etc. curriculum, and students learn them as much or more than the stated curriculum itself.’ We seek papers that engage questions of learning infrastructures, not only in the meanings that we provide, but across all valences of the topic. They monitor environments and measure a multitude of environmental characteristics such as air quality, temperature, noise, humidity, and radiation (Gabrys, 2019; Starosielski, 2021). They attempt to detect, compute, and communicate context (Beigl, 2005). They are increasingly embedded in urban infrastructures, offices, objects, and homes. With our smartphones and watches, we also carry sensors with us or on us. Many smartphones are equipped with proximity sensors, ambient light sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, barometers, biometric sensors, face or fingerprint scanners, heart rate monitors, and sensor receivers like GPS and GNSS. These sensors ‘sense’ and process information and mediate many physical and virtual interactions in public and private spaces. As a result, sensor-mediated communication has become routinely integrated into our daily lives. >From self-tracking apps to self-driving cars, sensing technologies power automated decision-making systems and influence social practices around health and wellness, navigation and transportation, climate and energy use, commerce and consumption, sociality and engagement, and urban governance. Despite the growing prevalence of sensors and citizen-sensing projects (Gabrys, 2016), and the value placed on the data acquired through their use, academic interest in researching their societal, behavioral, and ethical implications is only recently gaining momentum. Even with key contributions that define contemporary societies as “sensor societies” (Andrejevic & Burdon, 2015), and as attributes of the “quantified self” (Lupton, 2016) become foundational to an increasing number of everyday interactions, sensor-mediated communication has remained a relatively under-researched topic. With current crises of mobilities such as climate change, mass migrations and deportations, and pandemics, mobile forms of sensing and sensor-mediated communication and interaction have gained salience as smartphones, Internet of Things devices, and technologies for ‘always-on’, passive data collection are increasingly utilized for controlling and governing communities, societies, and populations. Therefore, we believe that it is time to critically reflect on and empirically analyze sensor-mediated communication practices and their societal and ethical implications. With our special issue on sensor-mediated communication, we open up a critical discussion at the intersections of computer-mediated communication (CMC), critical data studies, surveillance studies, infrastructure studies, and media and communication studies. We invite empirical papers that address emerging debates regarding sensors and sensor-mediated communication, sensor data practices, and their societal implications for measuring, seeing, and knowing bodies, mobilities, environments, and the data they produce. Although the Covid-19 pandemic with its increased uncertainty and anxiety around public health and contagion has created new urgency around sensors and the ways in which they mediate communication and interaction practices, this special issue focuses on issues of ethics, surveillance, technology design and use that may precede the pandemic yet contextualize current discourses and decisions around sensing technologies and sensor data. Our focus includes not only the commonplace use of smart(phone) sensors, such as apps for parents to track their children, or apps for care for the elderly and disabled, but also (and most importantly) the broader uses of sensors and scanners in cities, by platforms and governments, in robotics, drones and satellites, and through other forms of mobile and remote sensing. What does it mean to think about sensing technologies and practices as computer-mediated communication? How can mediated communication foreground investigations of sensing technologies that reveal organizational, cultural and structural mechanisms at work? This might include questions around power, mobilities, and capitalism as sensing and scanning technologies are increasingly embedded in mediated-communication practices of everyday life including personal, wearable, and “smart” devices. In response to these questions, we invite empirical papers that examine practices, processes, power, and ethics as they relate to sensors and sensor-mediated communication and interaction. Multidisciplinary papers and papers from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives are encouraged but must focus on sensors and their societal implications from a computer-mediated communication perspective. Articles for this special issue are expected to contribute to and extend existing CMC debates through a focus on critical questions related to CMC and how our field can examine the impacts and roles of communication technologies and mediated-communication through various aspects of sensors and scanners, i.e. sensor-mediated communication. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication only publishes original research articles and meta-analyses of prior research. Therefore, all submissions are required to have a section that describes and discusses the research process and/or methods. Hi everyone, We will have a debate about the issue of Internet sanctions this Friday. Please join us! To sanction or not to sanction the Internet access: A SancNet debate Friday, April 1st at 4 PM CEST, online, register here<https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMqd-CgrTguHNbZiKa-Rq2ugJHXblvZlO45> Up to now sanctions on the Internet infrastructure have not been explicitly used, perceived by some as an unacceptable barrier to communication. However, recently, when Russia invaded Ukraine, the Ukrainian government explicitly asked for such sanctions. In response to that, Internet governance organizations rejected this notion, but others proposed<https://www.pch.net/resources/Papers/Multistakeholder-Imposition-of-Interne…> that sanctions and boycotts should also be imposed on various properties of the Internet. Sanctions are not new. The Internet and many Internet services have long been affected by economic sanctions that governments impose on other nation states. Such sanctions have blocked people's access to online services and, to some extent, to Internet infrastructure. Considering the importance of the Internet in connecting people, nation states have come up with waivers for certain transactions that take place on the Internet. Today, in the face of atrocities being committed by Russia against Ukraine, is it time to reconsider whether sanctions are "absolutely" bad for the Internet? What can be learned from other examples of internet-related sanctions, such as Iran? Join us to debate the desirability and potential intended and unintended consequences of explicitly Internet-oriented sanctions. Is it possible to design sanctions and boycotts targeting Internet infrastructure and services that can be proportionate, precise, effective and that can provide relief for Ukraine and those affected by war? Please see the open panel description below, and feel free to reach out with any questions! --------------------------------------------------- *Organizers: *Stacy Wood, University of California Los Angeles; Yvonne Melisande Eadon, Department of Information Studies, UCLA *Accepted Languages:* English/Inglés/Inglês In recent years, a growing body of research has focused on mis- and disinformation spreading at scale via social media platforms (Starbird 2019). Small groups can have impact at scale via recommender systems and algorithmic amplification (Krafft and Donovan 2020). The phrase “do your own research” has become a persistent and recognizable call that flattens the distinctions between research methodologies and approaches to searching for information, at once resting on independent critical thinking and fostering community formation. This panel seeks to explore the social construction of legitimacy, authority and credibility within resistant research communities. We define resistant research communities as communities of researchers whose methodologies, qualifications or object of study are explicitly antagonistic to established research infrastructures, institutions and credentials. This might include areas of study that are counter to scientific method and consensus (e.g. anti-vaccination, flat-earth, areas of ufology) or areas of study that are counter to contemporary and/or historic documentation (e.g. QAnon bakers). While there are a suite of methodologies used to track the scale and spread of mis- and disinformation, significant work needs to be done regarding the social and cultural production of knowledge within resistant research communities and the socio-technical configurations within which this production occurs. We welcome all methodologies and frameworks. Possible questions and topics include: How do resistant research communities influence or affect the wider scientific research community? What are gatekeeping functions in resistant research communities? How do community dynamics affect outcomes?
