Search engines and virtual assistants respond directly to questions based on textual or verbal searches (e.g., “Things to do in Philadelphia?” or “What is the capital of Israel?”). The special issue is thus dedicated to the often-invisible ways (to the non-specialist) that internet companies are now actively involved in constructing “knowledge” about the world. Organizations like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon extract, curate, and store facts served to users in new and emerging media products. Such processes have significant implications for the politics of knowledge sharing in the future. We seek papers that examine how design decisions “bake” these facts into the apps and platforms people use daily while focusing on the infrastructures dedicated to orchestrating and presenting this information. The goal is to understand the technologies that will drive social and political outcomes when large internet companies become a primary conduit through which people directly acquire an understanding of facts about the world. We also seek to understand how governments, nonprofit, and nongovernmental organizations engage these media technologies. Semantic media are less about searching for keywords and matches on different websites that are then ranked for people to choose. Instead, they deal with identifying and describing entities (things like people, products, and places) and directing interactions with those entities (actions like purchasing, scheduling, and contacting). How do semantic media identify concepts and connect related information about them? How do companies and organizations produce facts and organize the data? From where does the data originate? What do these semantic processes mean for web users and administrators? What types of gatekeeping or safety checks do companies and organizations perform concerning these facts? Today’s semantic media have a long history reaching back to the “Semantic Web” project initiated by web inventor Tim Berners-Lee. Yet, media researchers do not adequately cover how companies and organizations implement semantic technologies on platforms relative to their central role. These semantic technologies are in proprietary and open source products, and extensive media platforms are now using them to provide facts and represent knowledge to various publics. Google’s Knowledge Graph is a database of facts that Google uses to provide quick answers to the public, and such graphs are in use at other companies. At the same time, Wikipedia has a product called Wikidata that similarly stores facts about the world in data formats through which various apps can retrieve the data. Researchers and journalists also use semantic technologies for search engine optimization, fact-checking practices, and data sharing and organization. This special issue thus focuses on such platformized versions of fact production and examines the underlying infrastructures, histories, and modeling techniques used in knowledge representation systems. We are interested in quantitative, qualitative, and critical approaches and papers that propose new methods, theories, and frameworks. How to recruit without spamming?

Hi everyone, can anyone advise me about how to recruit research participants from particular Facebook pages or Twitter threads without spamming? I just got a Research Page I created on Facebook unpublished after two comments I posted included a standard blurb inviting research participants, that was approved by my IRB, and two replies in a thread were very similar because I wanted both participants in that thread to be research participants. Not sure which of these two repetitions violated FB's policy against "repeating the same comment"--probably the two replies that were almost identical (I note that Twitter has a similar policy). But I can't figure out how to avoid the repetition and stay within my IRB requirements, because unless I've misunderstood, they require me to have a standard invitation that they approve ... Mark Zuckerberg recently demonstrated a tool called ‘Builder Bot,’ where a whole VR environment could be generated using AI through simple voice commands. This talk will cover some recent academic and commercial work being done in the AR/VR domain, and identify places where those questions will touch on several interrelated computing and data fields. Through these examples, the talk will highlight important research and data questions that still need to be answered and hopefully open up areas for collaboration. About the Speaker Tony Liao (Ph.D., Cornell University) is an Associate Professor in the University of Houston Department of Information Logistics and Technology and the Founding Director of the CougAR lab, which explores how augmented and virtual reality technologies could affect society now and in the future. Quantitative Research Assistant Position - Student & Campus Protest Events Project

The analytic focus is on student anti-racism movements. The project’s research objectives are to: (1) explain the factors that facilitated student mobilization, particularly on anti-racism and labor issues, and its diffusion across campuses and countries; (2) learn the factors determining university administrations’ and police departments’ responses; and (3) understand the relationship between competing claims from protesters and administrators. We are creating the Student & Campus Protest Events Dataset, an innovative dataset based on student and campus protests reported in student newspapers. Approximately 25% of the protest events in the dataset also include data on university leaders’ reactions to protest and/or protest policing activities. Theoretically, the project brings together the sociological study of social movements, organizations, policing, and political culture by using techniques of machine learning and sociological coding as well as quantitative, interpretive, and relational analysis. The analyses will demonstrate the back-and-forth interactive dynamics -- in which activists organize, protest spreads (or not), and targeted leaders respond (or not) -- that are fundamental to social movement mobilization. The end goals are to explain the key ways that movements try to generate social change and the way that institutions attempt to manage protest. We also expect to develop partnerships with student social movement networks and to translate the findings so they are useful to student activists. Job Description You will work on merging the event dataset with institutional data, other protest event data (e.g. BLM), Twitter data, and other local data from cities and campuses (e.g., census, voting data). You also will check data quality and perform quantitative data analysis. This position is for one year and 20 hours a week. It also has the potential for co-authorship with the PIs. Impact assessment Fundamental Rights and Algorithms

Dear colleagues, last year, a team at Utrecht Data School together with Janneke Gerards (professor for fundamental rights at Utrecht University) developed an impact assessment for algorithms and human rights. We finally managed to translate it into English: Fundamental Rights and Algorithmic Impact Assessment (FRAIA).
