The research field of culture and video gaming has been growing steadily over the past years. In an effort to bring together people working in the field and providing a space for exchange, the International Academy for the Study of Gaming and Religion (IASGAR) is now hosting its first PhD-Summer-Day. This will give PhD students and other early stage researchers the opportunity to discuss their work and receive feedback from renowned international scholars from the field. Research addressing media-centered approaches, the perspectives of games developers, and publishers as well as the recipients’ point of view are welcome. The IASGAR-Summer-Day 2022 will give doctoral students and master students an opportunity to receive feedback from international senior scholars in a collegial atmosphere. The IASGAR PhD-Summer-Day offers a chance to engage in a critical exchange about practical methods and theoretical approaches for the scientific handling of religion, culture and video gaming. The conference will take place in hybrid form, i.e. the experts will be on site, but the doctoral students can also join digitally – in the event of travel difficulties. On the Margins: Hypertext, Electronic Literature, Digital Humanities Senate House, University of London London, UK, December 15-16, 2022 https://easychair.org/cfp/Margins22 Since its early days as a series of experimental approaches, the Hypertext paradigm has proven itself vital in dealing with what Ted Nelson called “deep structural changes in the arrangements of ideas and phenomena.” Whether we conceive of Hypertext as non-sequential writing that branches and allows choices to the reader, or as a body of written or pictorial material interconnected in such a complex way that it could not conveniently be represented on paper, thinking in Hypertext has become a ubiquitous part of everyday life. In our research lives, Hypertext technologies and methodologies are similarly amongst the most prominent and visible outcomes of the “digital age.” Mature products of its investigation by research communities can be found in the work of Electronic Literature scholars and practitioners, Hypertext and Hypermedia specialists, and researchers in the Digital Humanities. However, owing perhaps to their disparate angles of investigation and the sheer scope of activity, these research communities remain fragmented and somehow “on the margins” of wider Humanities and Computer Science scholarship. We invite members of the Hypertext, Electronic Literature and Digital Humanities communities, including PhD and Early Career Researchers, to come together for a two-day conference reflecting on how Hypertext has shaped our research and creative practices, to build research opportunities between sympathetic communities, and to envision how to push the boundaries of Hypertext beyond its current incarnations. We want to inaugurate a space that will promote debate and connections, building new understanding at the crossroads between disciplines. We are planning to hold the conference in person, but can make arrangements to show pre-recorded presentations if you are unable to attend. The Popular Culture Studies Journal is currently soliciting reviews for our upcoming October 2022 issue. We are seeking authors to review works on any aspect of American or international popular culture. Specifically, we are interested in reviews of recent (i.e. published within the last two years) scholarly monographs or anthologies and general interest books examining all areas of popular culture from a variety of perspectives. We will also consider older seminal pieces that deserve a second look. In addition, we are seeking reviews of films, videos, websites, games, theater, or any other popular works that have been published, released, performed, or posted in the last two years. Once again, we will also consider older seminal works that deserve a second look. We only ask that reviews of popular media texts discuss how such works might be used in pedagogical or scholarly situations. If you wish to review a popular media text, you must submit a brief rationale for the relevance of the review. A short paragraph outlining why you think the text is worthy of review in the journal will suffice. Reviews should adhere to the ethos of the Popular Culture Studies Journal and be largely positive with any criticism of the work being constructive in nature. Kate ________________________________ Elizabeth Losh - Selfie Democracy: Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and the New Digital Politics Wed, 4 May 2022, 16:00 – 17:30 BST Register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/selfie-democracy-barack-obama-donald-trump-a… Based on interviews with White House insiders, archival research, and a trove of digital data, this presentation provides a preview of the author’s forthcoming book about digital literacy in the White House. It reveals important insights about the smartphone practices of the most significant actors in recent American politics—Barack Obama and Donald Trump as presidents and Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden as presidential candidates—and how their approaches to domestic governance and crisis management related to their everyday technological choices as users of computational media. Such powerful political leaders often reinforce certain cultural assumptions about the power of the smartphone that perpetuate myths about connection, transparency, participation, and access. These myths are further amplified in rhetoric borrowed from Silicon Valley about how these technologies supposedly strengthen social bonds, enable exploration, encourage engagement, and overcome barriers. Obama might have been the anti-Trump and Trump the anti-Obama, but they both used mobile computing in ways that redefined the office of president. This talk exposes the unintended consequences of wireless technologies on political leadership and shows how seemingly benign mobile devices that hold out the promise of direct democracy can ultimately undermine representative forms of government, as the January 6th, 2021 storming of the US Capital by a selfie-taking mob livestreaming the insurrection demonstrates.

Postdoc positions 'Governing the Digital Society'

Utrecht University offers two full-time positions for Postdoctoral researchers for two years (24 months) in the focus area “Governing the Digital Society” (GDS externe link<https://www.uu.nl/en/research/governing-the-digital-society>). This interdisciplinary focus area fosters the collaboration between the Departments of Media and Culture, Law, Governance, and Information Science. The GDS group promotes research on the social processes of datafication, algorithmisation and platformisation. Our basic research inquiry revolves around the question: How to develop and apply principles of (good) governance in digital societies? Applied research based on this question is also welcomed. The postdoc positions will be part of the Spinoza-funded project, led by Prof José van Dijck and will start no later than September 1, 2022.
