Sorry for Cross-Posting This one-day workshop aims to engage researchers, Smart city practitioners and refugees in discussions about Smart Cities and the increasing role of technology in our environments. The main aim is to empower marginalized stakeholders in these discussions, who are currently underrepresented in design and development processes of digitalized environments. During this workshop, we use and further develop an inclusive card game method to scaffold discussions among different stakeholders. We aim to support a mutual learning environment for participants, in which we can share and discuss different perspectives. Finally, we aim to create a sharing community in which this card game and other methods and tools support collaboration with marginalized citizens can be shared with practitioners, researchers and citizens. For researchers and Smart city practitioners, this workshop will be hold as a one-day, hybrid workshop. The main activities will take place in zoom and we offer networking opportunities during the breaks. For the refugees, we offer a series of three co-located, in-person workshops in different countries of the organizers (Austria, Germany, the Netherlands): * A pre-workshop to brainstorm about relevant topics the refugees would like to discuss during the conference workshop and to practice the experience of a workshop. Researchers (other than the organizers) and practitioners are not participating in this workshop. * During the main conference workshop the participants of the co-located workshops participate virtually, supported by the organizers. The researchers and smart city professionals take part in the discussions with the participants of the co-located workshops via zoom. We will play a visual card game to scaffold discussions and to support participants with a language barrier. The topics of the discussions will be Smart city related and picked by the participants during the pre-workshop. * A post-conference workshop will be held with the participants of the co-located workshops to discuss the participant’s experience and to learn how we can improve the methods we used during the workshops. All participants will be invited to contribute to the main outcomes we aim for: 1) a scientific publication about methods for involving marginalized groups in Smart city discussions 2) a sharing community to support practitioners with methods and tools to involve marginalized groups in Smart City projects. Researchers (other than the organizers) and practitioners are not participating in this workshop. We invite to this workshop researchers, practitioners who work in fields related to Smart Cities, and refugees. We aim to create an inclusive and accessible workshop experience for all participants. To have a balanced number of participants from each group, we limit the amount of participants for each. We invite a maximum number of 10 researchers and a maximum of 10 Smart city practitioners to take part in this workshop. The submission format is open and flexible. Platforming and Unplatforming: A Research Workshop Los Angeles, February 4-5, 2023 (Writing Sprint, February 6-7, 2023) Over the last decade, there has been growing concern over the influence of platforms on multiple spheres of life. Definitions of “platforms” are various and controversial. As defined by van Dijck, platforms are, “providers of software, (sometimes) hardware, and services that help code social activities into a computational architecture; they process (meta)data through algorithms and formatted protocols before presenting their interpreted logic in the form of user-friendly interfaces with default settings that reflect the platform owner’s strategic choices” (2013, p. 29). As Tarleton Gillespie (2010) notes, the choice of the term “platform” itself is an indication of the role many of these sites hope to project and establish their role in society as a “neutral intermediary.” Yet, major social platforms like Facebook and Twitter have affected (inflected, infected) social discourse, leading to questions of how people use and are used by these platforms (Burgess, 2021). And while social platforms have dominated many of these conversations, interdisciplinary scholars have called attention to the platformization of everything from healthcare to business education (e.g., Ajunwa & Greene, 2019; Berg et al., 2018; Kelkar, 2018; Kellogg, Valentine, & Christin, 2020; Lee et al., 2015; Zhang, 2021). Critical attention to platforms and platformization across domains raises common questions: namely, when we all use the same “Software as a Service” how far does that remove the locus of control from the users and from the institutions and organizations they work within? We invite you to join us for a two-day unconference and workshop that seeks to bring together researchers from across disciplines who are seeking to understand the role of platforms, broadly construed, in society and within institutions, the threats and opportunities they pose, and how effective policies might be crafted to address them. An optional writing sprint will follow the unconference, with the intention of producing substantial collaborative and individual works, to be published in a collected volume. We ask participants interested in attending the workshop to submit a 500 to 1000 word position paper, no later than December 1, 2022, to unplatforming(a)gmail.com. The position papers may include any of the following: - Explorations of how we should be defining and conceptualizing platforms themselves. What is included in these definitions, and what might be missed? - A potential empirical study of a specific platform. - An analysis of the conceptual traditions and methodologies that may be of most benefit to researchers interested in studying platform mediation. - Structures of ownership and control for platforms. - Theoretical perspectives that advance our understanding of the relationship between platforms and users. - Design implication or policy position papers that address the role platforms are playing in society. - Critical examination of the field of platform studies itself. We are seeking unformed, unpolished work that is at a stage that can be influenced by the discussions that will occur at the meeting. Additionally, this work can take many forms: research ideas or drafts, speculative fiction, and other forms of creative work. Registration for the workshop is free to participants. CALL FOR POSTERS ICDCN 2023, the 24th International Conference on Distributed Computing and Networking, welcomes exciting posters showing promising early works on novel distributed computing and networking technologies and applications. We seek participation from both industry and academia. Selection posters will be based on a short abstract, evaluated based on technical merit and innovation as well as the potential to stimulate interesting discussions and exchange of ideas at the conference. The poster session is meant to introduce new or ongoing work and provide opportunities for authors to interact directly with attendees. Topics of Interest: We welcome all topics that align with the ICDCN main conference topics of interest. Poster Abstract: Poster abstracts should report on research work where at least some preliminary results are available, but they need not necessarily describe completed work. Call for Papers: Cultural Representations of Machine Vision Editors: Jill Walker Rettberg, Gabriele de Seta, Marianne Gunderson, Linda Kronman, (University of Bergen) The ERC project Machine Vision in Everyday Life<https://www.uib.no/en/machinevision> invites submissions to a collection of papers dedicated to the representation of machine vision technologies in cultural and creative works including fictional narratives, videogames, and artworks. The collection will be published in the Open Library of Humanities or a similar open access journal. As visual technologies are increasingly automated, using machine learning to interpret and generate images, societies around the globe face practical and ethical questions about how machine vision technologies should be implemented, evaluated and governed as they impact people’s everyday life. With their anticipatory and speculative potential, cultural representations of machine vision play a key role in answering these questions. Our premise is that cultural production – including literature, art, cinema, video games, science fiction, memes, fandom and more – is a rich source for understanding the impact of machine vision technologies on society, as well as their potential future trajectory. What can we learn from how machine vision is represented, used and discussed in digital art, video games, novels, movies, TV-series, fan fiction, electronic literature, popular culture, social media content and other aesthetically or culturally expressive genres? The Special Collection welcomes submissions engaging with the project’s dataset on machine vision in 500 creative works<https://doi.org/10.18710/2G0XKN> (see references below) as well as qualitative analyses, close readings and speculative studies of machine vision in fiction, art, games, social media narratives, and other forms of cultural production. Creative contributions such as artworks or short fictions are also welcome.
