Non-software uses of GitHub

I’m looking for GitHub repositories that are used for things other than software, especially where users are actively collaborating rather than just putting together static collections. So far, we have found a few books being written, some musical transcriptions being error-checked, and some policy documents maintained online. Does anyone know of any examples of these or other categories? Any pointers much appreciated. Happy to share what we find with anyone interested. Hi all — I emailed the list earlier in the year asking if anyone knew of any bibliographies of 1) books, specifically 2) in the field of Internet Studies, broadly defined. The reason for my question was I’m asking my students to write a book review of a monograph in the field for my class <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rshp8enFUQ2_vfuSHN88twwQXxXiDRYx_NTPU2i…> this spring, and wanted to give them a resource so they could find something in their interest area. A few people responded asking me to let them know if I found anything, but I didn’t, nor could my departmental librarian. There are plenty of syllabi for a topic area across many forms of scholarship (articles, books, films, etc), but nothing I could find for books, specifically. So my TA and I built a Google Form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_WaVIdg9Rh--nodpMWYKpLSj03zxouh5…> to help us make one. If you enter in the ISBN number of a book, it queries the Google Books API and populates the results to a public spreadsheet here <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ik83LPyjjqQLfWim53CEObnXdiVDqSkGJ0l…>. It pulls in the book description (from the publisher) and the subject areas (from the LoC), so that it is (reasonably) searchable. My TA and I just started entering in some books from our syllabus and some books that popped into our head, but I wanted to send it out to AoIR in case anyone here wants to contribute or use the list. If you want to contribute — please do! We’ve tried to make it as easy as possible, and you should definitely blast your own books into here, or those of friends, or whatever. It’s a work in progress and we’ll be figuring it out as we go along but hopefully it’s a helpful resource for someone (beyond just my students this term). Best, — Chris

CALL FOR PAPERS Algorithms for Her? 2: Feminist approaches to digital infrastructures, cultures and economies March 23rd-24th 2023 – Sheffield University Our daily lives are increasingly governed by algorithmic processes of selection, identification and discrimination. This international symposium focuses on the intersectional forms of injustice that algorithms—and the systems in which they are embedded—help to propagate and sustain. Given the significance and ubiquity of such processes in everyday life, and their disproportionate effects on those marginalised across intersections of gender, sexuality, class and race, this event will create a dedicated space for the discussion of algorithmic forms of oppression and inequality. Algorithms for Her? 2 seeks to support in-depth analysis of algorithms—together with their functions and entanglements—with critical feminist works that meaningfully examine the production and ethics of bias. “Newness” is often fetishised in analyses of digital culture. The approaches sidelined by this fetishisation are often those by women, nonbinary folks and scholars of colour, who have struggled to have their contributions included in dominant canons of thought. In recent years we have welcomed the increased visibility of critical perspectives on algorithms that are inclusive, intersectional, reflective and feminist, but there is still work to be done. Following the success of the first Algorithms for Her? event in January 2020, this conference seeks to give a platform to perspectives on algorithms and algorithmic culture that are still under-represented in the academy. We welcome both traditional conference presentations (15 minutes in length) and creative alternatives such as performances or artistic interventions. We invite contributions relating to… – Intersectional feminist work critically examining machine learning, content moderation and algorithms (broadly defined). – Intersectional feminist work examining software/tools/app design and infrastructure. – Intersectional feminist work on platform labour and inequalities. – Feminist methodologies for studying and teaching algorithms and the ethical questions they raise. – Industry/nonprofit cases of addressing discrimination/bias sustained by and ‘within’ technologies. The mission of the Department of Media Studies is to analyze media culture, technology, labor, literacy, policy, infrastructure, and inequity. Our goal is to provide students with the tools to evaluate and shape media. With global reach, our faculty and students examine media from a variety of perspectives that include media history, aesthetics and form, audience analysis, media uses, the impact of media on public opinion, and the relations between media and the law, including free speech issues, as well as the commerce and regulation of media in the public sphere. The department engages the role of media in these social arrangements through a combination of humanistic and social scientific approaches. We further focus on connecting with media stakeholders, drawing on close proximity and connection to Washington, DC and other national media centers to explore the global questions of the field. Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in media studies, communication, or a related field. We are additionally interested in candidates who have an active research program related to media policy and show a strong record of publication or a clear potential for such (in accordance with career stage). Candidates should also demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, a willingness to contribute to the scholarly life of the Department of Media Studies, and a commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and affirmative environment for faculty, staff, and students from historically underrepresented groups at the University of Virginia. The appointment begins in the fall semester of 2023. Applicants must have received their PhD by July 1, 2023. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
