Two-year (Post-doctoral) researcher position in the digital distribution and reception of film and TV series Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen, Norway A researcher position is available for at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies (Infomedia), Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Bergen from 1 January 2023. The position is part of the EU funded CHANSE project DIGISCREENS: Identities and Democratic Values on European Digital Screens: Distribution, Reception, and Representation. The position is for a fixed-term period of two years. About the project/work tasks: DIGISCREENS is a three-year international collaborative project led by Dr. Maud Ceuterick. The project focuses on five European countries: France, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania, and has the objective to analyse how the current practices of digital distribution of films and TV series on global and national platforms (Netflix, HBO, NRK, France TV, …) intertwine with the representation and the reception of identities and democratic values. The researcher will use film analysis and anthropological methods such as textual analysis, field work and interviews and be responsible for the research undertaken in France or in Norway (depending on the candidate’s expertise) in order to formulate answers to the project’s research questions. The successful candidate will develop a more specific research design in collaboration with DIGISCREENS’s project leader and the international collaborators of the project to analyse how the digitalisation of film and TV distribution affects the representation and reception of identities and democratic values across Europe. Research outputs should include peer-reviewed articles, conference presentations and co-organising one or more workshops and an international conference. The researcher will form a local team with the project leader and a research assistant and will join an international team consisting of 4 principal investigators and 4 postdoctoral researchers located in Norway, Spain, Sweden and Lithuania. The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to Bergen. Funding will be provided for fieldwork, research visits and conference visits. The starting date would be in or around January 2023. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded. · The candidate must have experience with researching film production or distribution, and/or with ethnographic methods or audience studies. · Experience with streaming platforms in a Norwegian or French context is an advantage. · The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, as well as have the ability to cooperate with others. · The position requires proficiency in both written and oral English, and a good command of Norwegian or French. Smart Computing is a multidisciplinary domain based on the synergistic influence of advances in sensor-based technologies, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, edge computing, big data analytics, machine learning, cognitive computing, and artificial intelligence. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, industrial systems, entertainment, and social media. SMARTCOMP 2023 will provide an international technical forum for experts from industry and academia to exchange ideas and present results of on-going research in most state-of-the-art areas of computing, sensing, and communications in heterogeneous application domains. The Workshops co-chairs of SMARTCOMP 2023 invite proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee during June 26-30, 2023. The purpose of the workshops is to stimulate discussions on state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and also controversial topics in the area of Smart Computing, and to create new opportunities for attendees' interactions in a less formal and more sharply focused context than at the conference itself. Therefore, workshops should be organized to promote lively interactions, and appropriate plans should be described in the written workshop proposals. Papers presented in the SMARTCOMP 2023 workshops will be included in the conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore. The organizers of the accepted workshops are required to publicize the workshop through disseminating the call for papers, soliciting submissions, organizing the review process, and deciding upon the final workshop program. At least one organizer should be physically present at the workshop in the case of SMARTCOMP will take place at least partially in presence and there will be no travel restrictions due to the pandemic situation. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Each workshop proposal must include the following: * the title and acronym of the workshop; * the names, addresses, and short bios of up to 200 words for each organizer; workshops may have up to three organizers. Dear colleagues, the LSST Corporation announces its Catalyst Fellowship Funded by the John Templeton Foundation for postdocs in the social sciences (broadly construed). The Catalyst Fellowship in social science supports early-career researchers to study social aspects of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) for up to three years. Prospective applicants may be interested in, for example, collaboration networks, the social organization of large-scale collaborations, broader implications of astronomical science, and methods for studying socio-technical systems. The social science postdocs will be part of a cohort with astrophysics postdocs and will be supported by a broad network of renowned mentors to realize the full potential of Rubin Observatory's LSST. Call for Papers The Twenty-Fourth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association New York City June 22–25, 2023 The Media Ecology Association (MEA) invites the submission of papers and proposals for panels for presentation at its 24th Annual Convention, which will be held June 22–25, 2023 in New York City. The deadline for submissions is December 16, 2022. While we are open to explorations on any topic of interest to media ecologists, we also include a convention theme with the aim of generating further discussion and probes involving multiple perspectives. Submissions do not have to address the theme, but are invited to do so. The theme of the 2023 convention is “Arts/Symbol/Context/Meanings.” In this time of global pandemic, political breakdowns, environment devastation, and mass confusion, we look to the arts and artists: what do the arts have to teach us? Media Ecology has a long and honored connection to the arts. In abandoning established forms of academic expression, Marshall McLuhan was fond of quoting Ezra Pound’s dictum “the artist is the antennae of the race.” Philosopher Susanne Langer underscored the contributions of artists to human knowledge as those who put “feeling into form” in a way that speech is unable to do. Neil Postman and Christine Nystrom urged the centrality of context in understanding the meaning of symbols and insisted on humor and plain language to communicate some of the most penetrating and enduring ideas of media ecology. In short, the arts employ forms and symbols that shape our view of the world, give us tools for thought, and allow us to reshape, re-imagine and re-contextualize our world. The annual meeting of the MEA provides an opportunity for our community of scholars, artists, educators, professionals and practioners to exchange experiences and ideas in a friendly environment. Participants at MEA conventions address a wide diversity of topics in our programs, and we encourage submissions that explore media ecological approaches from any number of different disciplines and fields of knowledge and social practice. We seek papers, thematic panels, roundtable discussion panels, creative projects, performance sessions, and other proposals of interest to media ecologists. New York City, traditionally a stronghold and showcase of both the popular and fine arts, will be the context in which our discussion takes place. The home of the Bowery and Broadway, doowop and opera, wall graffiti and some of the finest art museums in the world, New York will provide the backdrop to our conversation about the arts, symbols, contexts and meanings. Held at various locations in New York, participants will have ample opportunity to explore the rich cultural life of the City and not be confined to just one venue or neighborhood. Guidelines for Submission Please submit paper and panel proposals, in English, by December 16, 2022 to MEA2023Convention(a)gmail.com. A maximum of two submissions per author will be accepted. Authors who wish to be considered for the Top Paper or Top Student Paper award must indicate this on their submission(s). Submission Guidelines for paper and panel proposals: - Include title(s), abstract(s) (maximum 250 words), and contact information for each participant. - Outline, as relevant, how your paper or panel will fit with the convention theme. - Authors with papers submitted as part of a panel proposal or as a paper proposal who wish to be considered for Top Paper or Top Student Paper must send the completed manuscript (see guidelines below) to the convention planners by April 28, 2023. Submission guidelines for manuscripts for authors who wish to be considered for the Top Paper or Top Student Paper award: - Manuscripts should be 4,000–6,000 words (approximately 15 to 25 double-spaced pages) - Include a cover page with your institutional affiliation and other contact information. - Include an abstract (maximum 150 words).
