Dear Colleagues, We are glad to share the call for papers for the first book of the book-series 2024 of Communication Processes and Cultural Practices. ---------------- Cultural and creative industries (CCIs) encompass visual and performing arts, literature, and music, but also design, fashion, cultural heritage, and publishing (Sawyer, 2014; Razzoli et al., 2020). This concept also includes cultural and communicative processes (Casey and O’Brien, 2020). With few notable excep tions (Hesmondalgh and Baker, 2015; Snowball and Hadisi, 2020), social science has not yet set out to offer a systematic treatment of the field and its labor and organizational processes. However, forms of production within the CCIs are a promising subject of investigation for social scientists. Firstly, because formality and informality overlap more in cultural work (Banks, 2007) than in other sectors (Micalizzi, 2022; OECD, 2021). This is because it is presented as “cool” and apparently fun work (Hesmon- dalgh and Baker, 2015; Been and Keune, 2020). However, its organization often conceals dynamics of power and exploitation. A class dimension seems to be evident, with some jobs being considered prestigious and others second-class (Hesmondalgh, 2012), as well as a gender dimension, with several studies in diffe- rent sectors that have shown that there exists a deep occupational segregation (Rocchi et al., 2023; Micalizzi, 2022). Moreover, the critical contractual and organizational issues in these worlds are illustrated by the fact that in 2020, the Covid pandemic will lead to the loss of at least 10 million jobs in CCIs worldwide (UNESCO 2021). Finally, “over-the-top” platforms (Abreu et al., 2016; Magaudda, 2020) and the unexpected risks of automation associated with using artificial intelligence raise new questions about the future of work in this sector (Mazzone and Elgammal, 2019; Anantrasirichai and Bull, 2022). The call for papers invites theoretical and empirical, qualitative and quantitative research con- tributions that focus specifically on: - What are the boundaries of CCIs? - What does it mean to produce culture? Streaming platforms and new ways of producing CCIs - The types and forms of inequalities in the CCIs - Artificial Intelligence and the transformation of working and producing processes in CCIs. Authors are invited to send their proposals to culturalpractices_proposal(a)writeupbooks.com including an abstract of the book (no more than 800 words included bibliography), and a short bibliography. The abstract must clearly shed light on goals, methods and main results of the research, if the paper will be an empirical focus. The deadline for the submission of the proposals will be December the 22nd (2023). - Notifications of acceptance will be sent before the end of January. - Final version of the paper is due to the end of march. - The publication is foreseen for the end of June 2024. The proposals could be in Italian or in English. The Popular Culture Studies Journal<https://www.mpcaaca.org/popular-culture-studies-journal> is seeking authors to review works on any aspect of American or international popular culture. Specifically, we are interested in reviews of recent (i.e., published within the last two years) scholarly monographs or anthologies and general interest books examining all areas of popular culture from a variety of perspectives. In addition, we are soliciting reviews of films, videos, websites, games (both digital and analog), theater, or any other popular works that have been published, released, performed or posted in the last two years. Once again, we will also consider older seminal works that deserve a second look. We only ask that reviews of popular media texts highlight how such works might be used in pedagogical or scholarly situations. If you wish to review a popular media text, you must submit a brief rationale for the relevance of the review. A short paragraph outlining why you think the text is worthy of review in the journal will suffice. Reviews should adhere to the ethos of the Popular Culture Studies Journal, meaning they should be largely positive with any criticism of the work being constructive in nature. Now—as evidenced by movements from the Arab Spring to Black Lives Matter—revolutions, protests, and political dissidence are profoundly shaped by information circulating through digital networks. *Digital Unsettling* is a critical exploration of digitalization that puts contemporary “decolonizing” movements into conversation with theorizations of digital communication. Sahana Udupa and Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan interrogate the forms, forces, and processes that have reinforced neocolonial relations within contemporary digital environments, at a time when digital networks—and the agendas and actions they proffer—have unsettled entrenched hierarchies in unforeseen ways. *Digital Unsettling* examines events—the toppling of statues in the UK, the proliferation of #BLM activism globally, the rise of Hindu nationalists in North America, the trolling of academics, among others—and how they circulated online and across national boundaries. In doing so, Udupa and Dattatreyan demonstrate how the internet has become the key site for an invigorated anticolonial internationalism, but has simultaneously augmented conditions of racial hierarchy within nations, in the international order, and in the liminal spaces that shape human migration and the lives of those that are on the move. Digital Unsettling establishes a critical framework for placing digitalization within the longue durée of coloniality, while also revealing the complex ways in which the internet is entwined with persistent global calls for decolonization.

These complex systems are frequently distributed over heterogeneous networks and process a large amount of data, leveraging emerging artificial intelligence (AI), large language models, and machine learning techniques. Complexity arises from many factors, including the dynamic environment and the scenarios these systems operate in, demanding and sometimes conflicting requirements in functionality, efficiency, scalability, security, dependability and adaptability, data heterogeneity, as well as the wide range of development methodologies, programming languages and implementation details. Performance, real-time behaviour, fault tolerance, robustness, security, adaptability, development time and cost, and long life concerns are some of the key issues arising in the development of such systems. The International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS) is a well-established event that has been held around the world for over 25 years. The goal of this conference is to bring together industrial, academic, and government experts from a variety of application domains and software disciplines, to discuss how the disciplines’ problems and solution techniques interact within the whole system. Researchers, practitioners, tool developers and users, and technology transfer experts are all welcome. The scope of the conference includes long-term research issues, near-term requirements and challenges, established complex systems, emerging promising tools, and retrospective and prospective reflections of research and development into complex systems. The ultimate goal is to build a rich and comprehensive conference program that can fit the interests and needs of different classes of attendees: professionals, researchers, managers, and students. A program goal is to organize several sessions that include both academic and industrial papers on a given topic and culminate panels to discuss relationships between industrial and academic research. SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION Full papers are divided into two categories: Technical Papers and Experience Reports. The papers submitted to both categories will be reviewed by the program committee members, and papers accepted in either category will be published in the conference proceedings. Technical papers should describe original research, and experience reports should present practical projects carried out in the industry, and reflect on the lessons learnt from them. Short paper submissions describe early-stage, ongoing or PhD research. All short papers will be reviewed by the program committee members, and accepted short papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Submissions to the conference must not have been published or be concurrently considered for publication elsewhere. All submissions will be judged on the basis of originality, contribution to the field, technical and presentation quality, and relevance to the conference. The proceedings have been published by the Conference Publishing Services (CPS) of the IEEE Computer Society. Submitted manuscripts should be in English and formatted in the style of the double-column IEEE CPS format. Full papers should not exceed 9 pages + 1 page for bibliography, and short papers should not exceed 5 pages + 1 page for bibliography, including figures, references, and appendices.
