Paper Submission Guidelines Paper submissions must be no longer than 8 pages (the page count limit includes the references list) and formatted according to the two-column IEEE proceedings template. Authors should use the conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference option of the IEEEtran document class. Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (PDF-A standard complies with this), through EDAS. All submitted papers that conform to these guidelines will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. The digitally mediated reality offers a number of affordances to citizens for communication, self-expression, and exercising political and civic agency. ‘Doing’ citizenship in the digital age now encompasses various configurations of social media platforms, messaging services, data repositories, and other networked technologies, and ranges from e-voting and using digital IDs to online campaigning and neighbourhood chat groups. But these affordances are not always possibilities for action: often, they can limit the potential for empowering citizens. Governments also seek to use digital tools to reaffirm their control over the public sphere and information space, while big tech platforms work to collect and consolidate user data for profit as part of their business model. This workshop brings together a group of researchers working on different aspects of digital politics, internet governance and datafied society. The goal is to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue about the promises and perils of networked citizenship and to understand the myriad actors and processes involved in defining, contesting and complicating the practice of being citizens today. In the form of an edited collection, it will extend and innovate current theoretical understandings of and approaches to digital art, visual media, new technologies, digital culture and society. *CFP: Music and the Internet, University of Chicago and virtual, 9-10 June 2023* Music and the Internet (musicandtheinternet.co) is a hybrid, multi-day interdisciplinary conference that will take place virtually and at the University of Chicago June 9-10 2023. Its goal is to bring together scholars and creators to present across a variety of perspectives on the intersection of music, sound, and online culture, and to help cultivate the developing international network of thinkers at work on these topics. >From autoplaying videos to social media echo chambers, the 21st-century internet is a noisy place. The internet and online platforms have become increasingly entwined in both the music industry and in everyday musical activity, with music as both a shaped and shaping medium. Online music communities have emerged around net-native genres with distinct aesthetic, communicative, and meme-based conventions. Such developments have varied throughout the history of music on the internet, with reverberating effects in other online creative industries. Accordingly, a range of theoretical, practical, and ethical issues are in open (and often urgent) discussion for those studying these phenomena. In all these applications UAVs may coexist with ground Internet of Things (IoT) devices. For example, UAVs autonomously perform remote sensing relaying the collected data by the sensors. Additionally, one or more UAVs can collaborate to provide services that require efficient protocols where multiple objectives and constraints need to be considered. For this workshop, we seek papers that combine the design of algorithms and testbed implementations to develop the theoretical foundations for UAVs as well as the synergies with IoT devices. The proliferation of IoT devices as well as the numerous use cases reveal the very promising potentials of IoT in revolutionizing several aspects of common activities as well as business processes. The vision of interconnecting billions of devices in a holistic network, where machines communicate along with traditional human communications is now being realized, towards the formation of the Internet of Everything (as called by Cisco). The workshop focuses on Industrial Internet of Things systems and applications, which represent the highest value segment of the IoT market. The heavy research endeavors of last years have provided efficient solutions and enhanced technologies that enable the creation of such a network, overcoming several challenges stemming from the special attributes of device-to-device communications, embedded devices, and big data management. The new challenge is to identify efficient ways of integrating IoT technologies in contemporary applications exploiting the potentials of real-time monitoring, interactive control, self-management, and data analytics towards "smart" behavior and enhanced performance. Future and emerging technologies, such as 5G and 6G networks, Distributed Ledger Technologies, and crowdsourcing systems, along with innovative models and paradigms, such as the Internet of Things, Industry 5.0, and community networks, will play an important role in the transition to Circular Economy. The development of relevant international standards and policy-making initiatives, such as the European Green Deal, will also facilitate the transition. Smart Circular Economy is an international workshop focusing on the role of ICT as an enabler for Circular Economy. The Future Internet paradigm, the proliferation of emerging networks and architectures, wireless access technologies and multi-homing smart devices are evolving towards a competitive environment, where users and devices have access to various resources, while their behaviors become strongly interdependent. This fact demands and motivates the development of user-centric resource management and optimization frameworks, which enable user's self-optimization and autonomy. This vision is further motivated and supported by the convergence of various emerging technologies enabling Cyber-Physical Systems operation, including 5G/B5G/6G technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Edge Computing and Software Defined Networking, all targeting flexibility and efficiency. To deal with the involved complexity, and driven by the requirements of autonomy and scalability, distributed resource orchestration approaches appear as a necessity rather than a desire. The REFRESH Workshop aims at to stimulate research on the most novel topics of real-life modeling in 5G/6G networks and beyond. This year's edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of wireless networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as, but not limited to: mobile edge computing, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, public safety networks, dynamic spectrum utilization, smart grid communications, wireless power communication, green wireless networks, information-centric wireless networks. The development of IoT, however, has reached a crossroads, which means that without intelligence, an IoT system will act as an ordinary information transfer system. Emerging IoT applications in various fields, including smart city, smart home, smart grid, e-health, intelligent transportation systems, etc., require trustworthy networking solutions that are resilient against high mobility, high density, disasters, infrastructure failures, cyberattacks, and other disruptions. This interdisciplinary landscape of IoT applications demands researchers from different areas such as machine learning, computational intelligence, optimization, distributed computing, embedded systems, and big data to synergize their efforts in better understanding the untapped opportunities to produce highly efficient, deployable, intelligent IoT systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UrbCom 2023 (5th International Workshop on Urban Computing) It is undeniable that the cities' urbanization has modernized people's lives, bringing several benefits to the population. However, it has also brought serious challenges such as public management of collective spaces, air pollution, traffic congestion, energy consumption, and quality of life. In this context, Urban Computing emerges as a process of acquisition, integration, and analysis of a large volume of heterogeneous data generated from different sources in urban spaces, such as portable devices, sensors, vehicles, humans, among others. Urban Computing is an interdisciplinary area that connects information and communication technology, advanced management of large volumes of data, and diverse data analysis methods to propose solutions to problems faced by cities. In addition, Urban Computing seeks to understand the nature of urban and social phenomena to better plan the future of cities and improve their inhabitants' quality of life. Topics of interest for C19:ST&DC include several novel methods used for COVID-19 detection using deep learning and distributed computing methods. Distributed computing has accelerated COVID-19 research in molecular dynamics as it allows people around the world to make their computers available to researchers for effective virtual screening of chemical compounds. Distributed computing encourages international collaboration and enables access to richer datasets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WCNEE 2023 (7th IEEE International Workshop on Wireless Communications and Networking in Extreme Environments) Wireless communications and networking in extreme environments such as underwater, underground, rural areas, intra-body, in flight and in space have been attracting growing interest from both academia and industry in an effort to conquer the last frontier for wireless technologies. In recent years, underwater wireless networks have attracted significant attention for military and commercial applications including oceanographic data collection, disaster prevention, tactical surveillance, offshore exploration, and pollution monitoring. Unmanned aerial systems that are autonomously networked can assist humans in extreme or difficult-to-reach environments as well as provide cost-effective wireless connectivity for devices without infrastructure coverage. Underground wireless networks could enable applications such as precision agriculture, pipeline fault diagnosis, mine disaster rescue, concealed border patrol, and crude oil exploration, among others. Wireless networked systems of intra-body sensors and actuators could play a key role on real-time monitoring and medical treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, as well as enable automated drug administration and targeted drug delivery. Satellite (mega-)constellations could improve communications and ongoing monitoring of Earth phenomena ranging from weather and climate to disaster management. Rural areas remain underserved by increasingly core societal applications. Despite the obvious differences, underwater, aerial, underground, intra-body, rural and space wireless networks share common core research challenges that arise from the harsh nature of the propagation medium (fading, absorption, scattering, multipath) and the inaccessible nature of the environment. As a result, conventional communication and networking techniques do not "scale up" in extreme communication environments mainly due to the excessive propagation losses of traditional wireless technologies and the financial limitations of operating far from "grids". The goal of the WCNEE workshop, now in its 6th edition, is to bring together academic researchers and industrial players to share their research findings and technical contributions, from the physical all the way to the application layer in realizing underwater, aerial, underground, intra-body, rural and space wireless communication networks with a focus on bridging the gaps between theory, algorithms, prototypes, testbeds, demonstration and production networks. WCNEE will also facilitate discussions about modeling and characterizing propagation and wireless network performance in such diverse environments based on real-world data measurements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LS-NoT 2023 (1st International Workshop on Long and Short Range Wireless Technologies Applied to IoT for Networks of Tomorrow) The popularity of the IoT has grown over the last decade thanks to its numerous applications and the evolution of micro electronics. Moreover, with this evolution, the price of IoT components decreased during the last decade, which made them more accessible and eased their integration in specific areas. This leads to pioneer IoT applications opening an exciting path to the world of tomorrow. From these domains, we can note : Satellite communications (satellite-to-satellite, satellite-to-earth, earth-to-satellite), Wide range communication in white areas, Vehicular communications (vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, infrastructure-to-vehicle), Fog and Edge computing, etc. just to name a few. These new domains in IoT bring challenges and opportunities in terms of communication, whether in long or short range, that the actual wireless technologies need to tackle. For these reasons, this new workshop aims at finding and promoting new solutions for long and short range IoT applications. Moreover, any recent communication technologies that can be applied to IoT devices have to be investigated and promoted. In this sense, we can already see many useful application areas like Smart Cities, environmental monitoring, connected logistics, smart digital supply chains, healthcare, smart manufacturing, predictive maintenance, and smart power grids. Yet, more unconventional solutions could be devised with the support of IoT-related technologies, for example, to interconnect the real and the virtual worlds of the Metaverse. In Un-IoT, we seek papers that address unconventional IoT uses and applications targeting new target areas that still remain mostly unexplored. The Internet of Things provides unparalleled opportunities for the development of new novel services. Currently, most of the new electronic devices are offering from basic to advanced networking capabilities in the context of smart environments. Newer vehicles are partially or completely autonomous, powered by modern microprocessors, hundreds of sensors and Internet enabled services. The same applies to robotic and medical devices and almost every other advanced equipment. Despite the longstanding efforts of the scientific community to secure Internet and Network communications, Operating Systems and Software Applications, only a limited amount of this knowledge has been applied to the IoT ecosystems. Most of the IoT devices, including modern vehicles suffer from numerous and multilayered vulnerabilities. Default, weak or no password authentication for remote connections, unencrypted traffic or obsolete and insecure cryptographic algorithms, outdated, unmanaged and vulnerable software are among the most serious problems of the IoT landscape. Even more alarming is the unregulated manufacturing process of many IoT constructors. Aiming to reduce the cost and minimize the time to market of their products, minimal or none effort is put to secure and support them sufficiently. Worse, there are recorded cases of IoT devices delivered with preinstalled malware that demonstrate total lack of operations security in the supply chain. In contrary to software applications in PCs and mobile devices, the owners are not likely to replace their devices because of security problems. As consequence, these systems remain vulnerable for extended periods. Indeed, as computing and communication technologies are becoming increasingly pervasive, and complexity of systems is growing in terms of scale, heterogeneity, and interaction, hence the focus tends to shift from the intelligence of individual devices or agents to the collective intelligence (CI) emerging from a dynamic collection of diverse devices. Such intelligence would allow systems to address complex problems through proper coordination (e.g., cooperation or competition), to self-organise to promote functionality under changing environments, and to improve decision-making capabilities. The workshop aims to provide a forum where researchers and practitioners can share and discuss fundamental concepts, models, and techniques for studying and implementing collectively intelligent distributed systems. With our Special Issue, we encourage authors to explore whether and how shifting from critique to care as a central concept for the developing field of data studies opens new pathways for more generative engagements with the transforming roles, relations, practices, and politics of data-driven automation. It has developed as a response to the data-utopian views on society which gained traction with the technological advancement of algorithmic and automated systems used for processing Big Data. This critical response was initiated amongst others by boyd and Crawford (2012) who formulated critical questions to the imaginaries of big data envisioning new possibilities for datafied knowledge production based on data's interconnectivity and portability. Central to data studies is its critique of technological determinism and 'data-intensive and positivistic' approaches to datafied societies enacted through narratives of big tech corporations. At the same time, scholars also identify a need for more generative and care-ful perspectives that counterbalance and/or challenge the data-utopian narratives and envisaged "big futures" (Michael 2017) of big tech corporations and policy makers. In particular, concepts of care have been used to critically examine data science and the increasingly important role of digital data in a variety of social domains. This turn towards care-ful perspectives in data studies follows a general trend of care-ful engagements with technology (design), where scholars propose alternative strategies such as community-led design and organisation, survival, repair, or refusal. In this Special Issue we want to explore these engagements with concepts and theories around 'ethics of care' further. In doing so, we shift our attention from the implications of data-driven automation for societies as 'matters of concern' (Latour 2004) to one that understands processes of datafication as 'matters of care' (Puig de la Bellacasa 2017). In this approach, care can be understood as both an ethico-political obligation (Puig de la Bellacasa 2017; Tronto 1993; 2016) and a practice of local tinkering (Mol 2008) required to create and maintain better futures. This 'double vision of care' (Lindén and Lydahl 2021) bridges normative perspectives on care, often critiqued as distanced from experience, and the local, partial practices of caring. The Special Issue invites scholars to submit empirical and conceptual contributions covering, but not limited to, various social domains from education, health care, ageing, to the public sector and welfare state. These domains are not only those where care is a necessary part of upholding (social) relations, but are also characterised by expectations of good care, while this care is increasingly required to meet certain datafied criteria. We especially invite submissions from or work engaging with scholars and activists of Black feminism, of the 'Global South' and Asia, and Indigenous scholars. Aware of different perspectives on data universalism, advocating plurality (Milan and Treré 2019) or making non-Western values more universal (Hoffmann 2021), this Special Issue aims to bring together contributions situated locally and not aiming to make universal claims. We invite care-ful engagements with, about and in data studies, addressing one or more of the following questions: What can we learn by examining data politics and practices as care-less or care-ful? How do practices of data care evolve through and in opposition to human-centred care practices and responsibilities? How can data management and governance be designed to incorporate collective practices of caring? What 'dark sides of care' (Martin, Myers, and Viseu 2015) are obscured when care is presented as an individual obligation and practice? What (un)caring transgressions may we observe across care and technology sectors?
