Dear AoIRists, I'm writing today in partnership with Michael Zimmer (cc'd) to see if anyone would like to join a set of panel and/or roundtable proposals for #AoIR2023 focused on research ethics. We are both on the AoIR Ethics Working Committee, but we aren't limiting our call for participants to those members. Anyone is welcome to join us, but note the deadline is coming up rather quickly! Recognizing that it's getting a bit tight in terms of the March 1 deadline for proposal submissions - nonetheless, we would ask for extended abstracts for contributions to a panel proposal centered around a theme of research ethics. A few have already come forward expressing interest but we have room for more participants. You'll need to provide us a 1000-1200-word extended abstract (adheringto AoIR’s pre-formatted template) by February 22, to allow us to compile the proposal for the panel(s) in time for the March 1 deadline. Hello everyone, I’m writing to see if there are folks interested in submitting a proposal for AoIR 2023 for a roundtable or a fishbowl on the topic of technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV). The purpose of this session is to reflect on TFSV-related research and issues with this field. Specifically, we would like to discuss challenges and opportunities of doing TFSV research, and we envision this session as providing the space for critical reflections, information sharing, and recommendations. Here are some potential themes and questions we’re interested in exploring: * Theoretical and conceptual issues: How is TFSV defined? What are its limitations? To what extent do the identifiers of “survivors”/”victims” and “perpetrators” apply to TFSV? * Knowledge and research issues: What gaps exist? What are emerging as critical areas in this field? Where should the field go next? * Logistical issues: How do we do research on TFSV? What are some ethical concerns? * Funding issues: To what extent is TFSV a priority in different contexts? Do agencies recognize TFSV as its own field, or is it grouped in with studies on cyberbullying, sexting, etc.? * Partnership and mobilization issues: How do we involve stakeholders? Who are key partners? How do we engage in knowledge transfer/mobilization in meaningful ways? * Personal issues: How do we, as researchers, manage our own health and safety as we study this sensitive topic? This would be a good fit for a graduate student or a recent PhD with knowledge of (or interest in) current academic research on trust and credibility, interpersonal communication and conflict, and/or media literacy. The work would be to help assemble an annotated bibliography of this literature, which will be used to power the development of an online tool that will help people navigate complex conversational exchanges around contentious topics like vaccines. The project, funded by the National Science Foundation’s Convergence Accelerator<https://artt.cs.washington.edu/hacks-hackers-partners-advance-to-phase-ii-o…>, is an initiative that is building an online tool focused on helping people engage in conversations in trust-building ways and facilitate constructive online exchanges around difficult topics. As part of this work, SSRC will develop the second version the ARTT Catalog<https://artt.cs.washington.edu/artt-catalog/>, which will contain interdisciplinary scholarly research that offers insight into practical methods for improving conversations, both online and in-person. The ARTT Catalog will ultimately help power the development of the project’s online tool, the ARTT Guide, which will empower users to develop their own responses during complicated exchanges by offering guidance and suggestions about how to best correct or engage with others. In partnership with the Media & Democracy Program Director, the contractor will: * Review extant literature in the first version of the ARTT Catalog and the MediaWell<https://mediawell.ssrc.org/> Zotero library. <https://www.zotero.org/groups/2243448/mediawell_citations_library/library> * Develop an open literature review of research into methods for generating trust, that starts with the nine different categories offered by the current catalog and verifies as well as builds upon them; * Attend an SSRC-hosted conference that invites experts to add to and expand on the research review; * Incorporate feedback from the conference to the research review, and build it out further based on recommendations from the broader community of scholars who may be interested in the project. * Amend and build the review into a second version of the ARTT catalog, with papers highlighted for methods that may be incorporated by the ARTT tool. Qualifications: * PhD candidate, or recent PhD, in the social sciences or humanities or a related field, which could include psychology, communications, political science, conflict studies, and science communication. * Knowledge of current academic research on trust and credibility, interpersonal communication and conflict, and/or media literacy. * Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail and a high degree of professionalism. * Excellent interpersonal skills; team player with demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and respond flexibly to changing demands. * Strong writing skills.
