(My editor has asked me to embark in an exercise of shameless self-publicity, so here it goes. Apologies for cross-posting) My newest book, The Eroticising of HIV: Viral Fantasies, is now available in Palgrave's Health, Technology, and Society series. This book examines sexual fantasies and their influence on everyday life through the stories of twenty-two men who introduce themselves as bugchasers, i.e. gay men who eroticize HIV. The book defines bugchasing, charts its history and contexts, and considers how it has changed in the age of internet and PrEP. Through the participants, their experiences and contexts, this text also theorizes about sexual fantasies, seeking to understand how people define sexual fantasies and use the internet. Chapters also consider how fantasies influence HIV prevention and care. Thrilled to share this recent publication by the Institute of Network Cultures in Amsterdam (INC) - *The Critical Meme Reader #2: Memetic Tacticality* (edited by Chloë Arkenbout and Laurence Scherz). The INC Reader series is derived from the Institute’s conference contributions and ties together many academic and non-academic thinkers dealing with the (political) power of memes beyond virtual images. This collection emphasizes the ability of memes to serve as tactical “weapons” in times of conflict. The multimodal novelty of memes has proven its efficiency in mobilizing people in events like the Capitol riots, sparking memetic violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and playing a substantial information delivery role in the war in Ukraine. It seems that in times of conflict, memetic warfare becomes more immediate and accessible than real-life demonstrations, and the distinction between the virtual and ‘real life’ no longer applies, or perhaps was never there? This collection delves into the current events that have driven the spread of memetic responses through digital infrastructures, policies, regulations, and bodies. Furthermore, this collection envisions the concept of "memetic tacticality" as a catalyst of a cultural revolution and raises important questions such as what kind of labor would require to materialize this reality? Hello all! I am putting together a panel on gender & misinformation for AoIR 2023 with a couple of colleagues. We are looking for one or two additional papers that examine online misinformation, disinformation, and/ or conspiracy theories through the lens of gender and/or gender studies (what are we missing when we don't discuss gender as a significant category in mis- and disinfo studies?), gendered case studies (intersectional approaches to online misogyny, harassment of women, etc.), and/ or instances in which women and femmes have either freely spread or pushed back against gendered misinformation. We are particularly interested in papers that examine these topics in majority world contexts. If interested, please shoot me an email with a 1 - 2 sentence description of your paper. Hi all, We are organizing a workshop at CHI this year titled “The Future of Hybrid Care and Wellbeing in HCI.” We aim to gather researchers across academia and industry to discuss remote care and wellbeing as we transition into a world increasingly adopting hybrid lifestyles and modes of operation. The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Computer Society's TCDP. It is a premier annual forum for sharing original, novel ideas in mobile ad-hoc networks and smart systems, defined broadly. As wireless ad-hoc networks continue to evolve and specialize into a number of application scenarios and environments, and sensor-based systems and technologies increasingly permeate our everyday life and become the inner fabric of the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems, the unfolding of smart environments such as smart cities, smart farming, smart healthcare, and smart manufacturing, to name a few, demand integrated solutions that can make intelligent use of both cloud and edge systems, while applying machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to handle their growing complexity and to leverage the vast amount of available data created. The MASS organizing committee invites proposals for full-day or half-day workshops affiliated with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to provide a platform for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than at the conference itself. The goal is to enable stimulating discussions of state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and perhaps controversial topics. Workshop proposals are solicited in all areas and topics related to mobile ad-hoc and smart systems. Addressing emerging research directions in these areas are particularly welcome. Accepted MASS 2023 workshop papers will be included in the conference proceeding published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, showing their affiliation with IEEE MASS. We expect all accepted workshops to adhere to a common paper submission (i.e., two-column IEEE conference style, maximum paper length of 6 pages) and reviewing schedule, as outlined in the dates indicated below. The media underwent massive restructuring through neoliberal policies in the 1970s. Introducing new communication technologies such as satellite and cable television, internet, and web platforms went hand in hand with market liberalisation and communication commercialisation. The multiplication of channels and media outlets was accompanied by concentration and centralisation of ownership. Recently, large transnational digital platforms have solidified their position as core companies within contemporary capitalism, restructuring the distribution of media advertising investments, speeding up the circulation of capital, automating global consumption patterns, avoiding national taxes, and siphoning revenues to offshore entities. At the same time, they benefit from automated management of their diversified and essentially precarious workforces of content moderators, warehouse workers, and gig workers, as well as from software inputs from free and open source communities (FLOSS) communities. The rise of platforms reshapes traditional institutional mechanisms that broadly safeguard freedom of expression, media pluralism, and public interests. How these mechanisms will be re-considered and how private interests will shape markets and societies is an open political issue. Alternatives are being envisioned in areas ranging from platform cooperatives and commons projects to strategic calls for technological sovereignty and public wealth creation. However, such initiatives usually need broader political support from the public already accustomed to the commercial logic of the media. The commodification of everyday life through data capture, surveillance and privacy intrusion is easily dismissed by citizens as a minor side effect of free usage and flexibility of ubiquitous digital services. This biennial course aims to explore traditional (e.g. ownership, production, content, consumption, labour, regulation) and contemporary (e.g. algorithms, platforms, data, artificial intelligence) perspectives on the media from the lens of critical political economy. The course will explore how capital and the state(s) control, regulate and form the media (broadly conceived as ranging from traditional printed press to algorithms and software) in societies shaped by persistent social inequalities. The level of analysis can vary from macro phenomena of geopolitics, transnational, national and institutional dynamics, through mid-range phenomena of the structure(s) of the public sphere(s), to micro-phenomena of class-based conditions shaping inequalities of access and skill for using the media in everyday life and for work. The course will include presentations from keynote speakers, course directors and presentations by advanced MA and PhD students. Through lectures and discussions with international experts, students will gain in-depth knowledge about recent communication, media, and journalism developments from the critical political economy perspective. Methods and analytical tools commonly used in the approach will be explained and discussed. Presentation of the research papers (considered work in progress) will lead to comprehensive feedback that will help students develop their projects further and result in publishable academic writing. Discussions will be carried out collaboratively, with reciprocal assessment by students. Deadlines: • Course is open to advanced MA and PhD students. Please submit your CV (maximum two pages), title and an extended abstract of your presentation (maximum two pages with references) by 15 April 2023 to political.economies.of.the.media(a)gmail.com • Course directors will review applications, and final decisions on acceptance will be sent by 15 May 2023. • Accepted applicants will be invited to submit 6 to 9,000-word research papers by 1 September 2023. After completion of the course, the applicants will be encouraged to submit their papers for review in an international peer-reviewed journal in the field of political economy. • Note: only PhD students can receive 10 ECTS points upon course completion, which entails a submitted research paper, paper presentation and full-week active attendance participation in the course (more information will be published on the course website). • Please note that all participants pay a registration fee of 50 EUR.
