Global in scope, Sutherland’s research focuses on the critical and liberatory in archival, digital, and science and technology studies, emphasizing the often-messy entanglements of memory, community, and technology. Sutherland, an internationally recognized expert in studying Black archival practices, is the author of Resurrecting the Black Body: Race and the Digital Afterlife (University of California Press, 2023) and over two dozen articles and book chapters. Through a diachronic analysis informed by corpus linguistics and feminist theory, the book examines how rape discourse has (or has not) changed over the past decade, and it explores how age-old myths about sexual violence re-emerge in different forms within news narratives. Against the backdrop of twelve years of newspaper coverage of rape, including many high-profile cases, this study also traces the rise of “celebrity culture”, the emergence of #metoo, and the development of the backlash against it. The historical events and media trends covered in this book are placed within broader debates on feminism and the role played by (social) media in shaping contemporary rape discourse. The book is timely as the issue of online information quality (especially on social media platforms) is now front-page news. The book proffers an alternative to the algorithmic engagement-based ranking of content by social media platforms: a new system for ranking online content based on information quality. Social media has brought billions of people from across the world together online and the impact of diverse platforms, such as Facebook, WeChat, Reddit, LinkedIn, Signal, WhatsApp, Gab, Instagram, Telegram, and Snapchat, has been transformational. The internet was created, with the best of intentions, as an online space where written content could be created, consumed and diffused without any real intermediary. This empowering aspect of the web is still, mostly, a force for good. People, on the whole, are better informed and online discussion is more inclusive because barriers to participation are reduced. As activity online has grown, however, an expanding catalogue of research reveals a darker side to social media, and the internet generally. Namely, misinformation’s ability to negatively influence our behaviour both online and offline. The solution we provide to this growing dilemma is informed by Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, which examines the relationship between language and reality from a philosophical perspective, and complements Claude Shannon’s Information Quantity Theory, which addresses the quantification, storage and communication of digital information from a mathematical perspective. The book ends by setting out a model designed by us: a "Wittgensteinian" approach to information quality. It defines content published online by clarifying the propositions and claims made within it. Our model’s online information quality check allows users to effectively analyse the quality of trending online content. This approach to misinformation analysis and prevention has been designed to be both easy to use and pragmatic. We particularly welcome investigations that focus on one or more of the following: (1) the archives that undergird our memory and memory-making practices; (2) scientific and biomedical investigations, their contributions, failures and controversies; and (3) community participation, such as activism and community advocacy. STS scholarship on HIV/AIDS has distinct phases. Prior to 1996, before effective HIV treatments became available, it was marked by widespread social inquiry. With the advent of antiretroviral treatments, public attention waned and scholarly fragmentation occurred. The mistaken underlying rationale was that this pandemic was over (or at least well-managed). Biomedical innovation, inflected by activist engagement, did result in treatments that can enable people living with HIV to live near a full lifespan. However, antiretroviral therapies come with side effects, require resources and stability to remain in care, and are dependent on the pharmaceutical industry and strained health systems. HIV has become a long pandemic – one that is both exceptional and intersects with ongoing human rights, socioeconomic, and public health crises. We seek submissions that take a long view, bridging historical STS work with contemporary trajectories in the field, including about the nature of expertise, knowledge production, archives, and activist and community participation in technoscience.
