For some, AI is being positioned as a fix to our social problems, which in turn will change how we live, communicate, work and travel. Others raise substantive concerns that these developments might reinforce inequality, exacerbate the opacity of decision-making processes, and ultimately question human autonomy. We are thus living in a time when the infrastructures and institutions of our everyday lives are being (re)built at the hands of techniques which already elude popular and professional understanding; but while the controversies about the specific pathways to be taken are still visible, we can already perceive elements of closure and institutionalization. Our symposium invites contributions from an international audience to interrogate the shaping of AI. Building on an international collaboration between research teams from Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Canada, we invite presentations that pursue critical engagements with AI’s media representations, policy framings, and scientific debates. Crucially, we also invite epistemic reflections in how we are all Shaping AI, including practice-based research or research-creation. The event is hosted at the Milieux Institute at Concordia University by the Machine Agencies Research Group and is supported in part by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Come feel out the nightmares and dreamscapes of digital touch at the 4S conference! Abstracts of 250 words are due FRIDAY, May 26th. The 4S conference is happening in Honolulu, HI, USA, this November 8-11, 2023. The conference will be a hybrid conference with the opportunity to present either in-person or online remotely. Our panel will explore the fantasies, dreams, utopias, and dystopias that are conjured in the development of emerging digital touch technologies. VR, AR, XR, and novel stimulation methods imagine and order the relationships between touch, human bodies, and technology. We are interested in exploring their utopic and dystopic registers, from fantasies of touchless haptic experiences to conspiracies about militarised virtualisation of the natural world. Our panel seeks to examine how digital touch affects human bodies and the social relationships that they inhabit. We seek to question engineers' attempts to abstract and quantify touch, asking what happens when physical sensations are emptied of their relational, practical, social, and historical meanings. We want to explore the conflicts and uncertainties brought about by new digital touch technologies - tensions between distance and proximity, violation and consent, pleasure and pain, and hype and conspiracy. We want to subject fantasies of digital touch to some reality-testing, asking: what anxieties and desires underpin them? who stands to benefit from them? who will take on the burden? whose bodies are on the line? and, importantly, what do technologies like this do for us as critical STS researchers? We welcome theoretical, empirical, or arts-based, work which explores haptics, digital touch, the metaverse, or VR/AR/XR technologies. Hello all! Abstracts of 250 words are due FRIDAY, May 26 for our 4S Open Panel: Decolonial, Colonial, and Indigenous Imaginaries in Games of Sea, Sky, and Land! Here’s the CFP as posted on the 4S site: While game studies has begun to acknowledge postcolonial and decolonial theory, the sociotechnical basis of games is rooted in colonial and imperial imaginaries. Trammell (2022) argues that game studies' fundamental theories of play are likewise racist and colonial. In-game conceptions of sea (kai), sky (lani), and land (ʻāina) seem subject to the same doctrine of discovery as reality; Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) is just one example of terra nullius exhibited in a cute resource management game. Sea, sky, and land are simply there to be occupied, mined, developed, and abandoned once the game - or the player - is done. These colonial concepts are embedded in the hegemony of play (Fron et al., 2007). As scholars from settler colonial societies that parallel this exploitation and the oppression of Hawaiian peoples, we seek to create a space where scholars can expand conversations about how the natural environment is imagined, represented, and envisioned in games, who and what can 'take space' in games, and what that means in our realities and to our futures. We encourage papers that investigate: Decolonial, colonial, and Indigenous sociotechnical imaginaries in games; their representation of and/or relationship with sea, sky, and land; how games imagine a better relationship with the natural world; implications of colonization in games; experiencing empathy toward nature and its gifts in games; effects of limitless natural resources and 'seasonless' farming. Other perspectives on postcolonialism, decolonialism, colonialism, imperialism, games, or the conference theme are also welcome. 4S will be happening in Honolulu, HI, USA, this November 8-11, 2023. Call for Complete or Nearly Complete Chapters, Handbook on Games and Sex/Sexuality We have a contract with Bloomsbury Publishing for a handbook on the intersection of video games and sexual content and sexuality. Traditionally, handbooks are envisioned as comprehensive surveys of the discipline aimed at the library market. Volumes typically consist of about 25-35 contributions written by experts in their respective areas of the field. Much work has been done by our contributors already and we are working with them on final edits and revisions. However, to be blunt, attrition due to many factors has taken a toll on us and we are now a few chapters short of our target. Our publisher has given us permission to do a second call for contributors. The concept behind a handbook is to compile a comprehensive assembly of essays in an attempt to map a discipline. As such we are primarily, but not necessarily exclusively, looking for synthesis/review essays that bring together existing research. We are not opposed to efforts which map out new directions in the field as long as they consider where we are as a basis for where we might/will be going. What makes this topic intriguing is that both the borders of sex and sexuality and the nature of video games resist easy categorization. Game Studies as an “academic field” is inherently interdisciplinary, creating both challenge and opportunity for how to conceptualize this (these) topic(s). If you have a near publication quality paper to round out an impressive collection of chapters, we would love to work with you as a possible contributor. Despite internet users speaking thousands of languages, most of these systems are primarily trained using English-language data. Computer scientists claim that they have found a solution to this linguistic gap in a new technology called “multilingual language models.” Multilingual language models work similarly to the language models that power new generative systems like ChatGPT, but instead of being trained on millions of examples of text in mostly one language, they pull text from dozens or hundreds of languages and learn connections between them. But do these multilingual language models work as well as companies say they do? Dear colleagues, We invite you to submit your research to the HICSS Mediated Conversation minitrack. This minitrack focuses on the study of conversations taking place on digital and social media. The deadline to submit your research to the HICSS Mediated Conversation minitrack is June 15. Conversations are at the core of human communication. Mediated conversations can use text, emoticons, audio, images, or video, or any combination thereof. The minitrack welcomes research on conversations that are interpersonal as well as those that occur via organizational or mass communication; involve journalistic, educational, or political contexts; or which appear in any other sphere of human activity, including the emerging interplay of human-machine communication — as evident, for example, in recent developments of generative AI tools for conversation.
