We are excited to announce our edited collection Algorithmic Rights and Protections for Children <https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262545488/algorithmic-rights-and-protections-f…>, will be released from MIT Press on June 27. Blurb: Algorithmic Rights and Protections for Children Editors: Mizuko Ito, Remy Cross, Karthik, Dinakar and Candice Odgers Essays on the challenges and risks of designing algorithms and platforms for children, with an emphasis on algorithmic justice, learning, and equity. One in three Internet users worldwide is a child, and what children see and experience online is increasingly shaped by algorithms. Though children's rights and protections are at the center of debates on digital privacy, safety, and Internet governance, the dominant online platforms have not been constructed with the needs and interests of children in mind. The editors of this volume, Mizuko Ito, Remy Cross, Karthik Dinakar, and Candice Odgers, focus on understanding diverse children's evolving relationships with algorithms, digital data, and platforms and offer guidance on how stakeholders can shape these relationships in ways that support children's agency and protect them from harm. This book includes essays reporting original research on educational programs in AI relational robots and Scratch programming, on children's views on digital privacy and artificial intelligence, and on discourses around educational technologies. Shorter opinion pieces add the perspectives of an instructional designer, a social worker, and parents. The contributing social, behavioral, and computer scientists represent perspectives and contexts that span education, commercial tech platforms, and home settings. They analyze problems and offer solutions that elevate the voices and agency of parents and children. Their essays also build on recent research examining how social media, digital games, and learning technologies reflect and reinforce unequal childhoods. Labor Tech Research Network <http://labortechresearchnetwork.org> (LaborTech) invites submissions for our second annual Book and Graduate Student Paper Awards, and first annual Social Justice Award. *About Us* LaborTech is an interdisciplinary and transnational group of experts concerned with the intersection of technology and labor. We aim to reframe conversations about technology and labor towards issues of power, inequality, and social justice, and incorporate themes of feminism, anti-racism, and transnationalism. We also seek to foster an interdisciplinary, cross-regional, and community-oriented space for discussion, collaboration, and empowerment. For a deeper discussion of our mission, please see the 'About Us' page on our website<http://labortechresearchnetwork.org> as well as examples of topics in our decade-long Speaker Series. *Call for Nominations* As part of our mission to promote scholarship and activism towards more equitable forms of labor and technology, LaborTech is announcing a call for three awards -- Book, Graduate Student Paper, and Social Justice. These will honor projects which: - have distinctive intellectual merit or activist impact; - advance the knowledge about labor and technology in the global society; and - address our core focus on labor and technology and which may simultaneously address feminism, anti-racism, and/or transnationalism. *Eligibility*: Works from all disciplines and methodologies are eligible for nomination. Nominations are open to members and non-members of LaborTech. We welcome self-nominations especially, but also nominations from publishers, colleagues, and others familiar with the projects. We encourage submissions from women, people of color, queer communities, and those from the global south. *Prizes*: Winners receive a small cash award and a certificate (which we hope to expand further in years ahead, as we are still a growing nonprofit organization :). We invite submissions of Research Papers and Showcases that focus on digital technologies for learning, educational and commercial games, innovative tech-infused curricula, and theoretical and/or empirical exploration of digital media and technology for learning. Royal Roads University invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Digital Inclusion with an expected start date no earlier than September 1, 2024. As part of Royal Roads University’s implementation of its CRC Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Action Plan and its associated equity targets, this posting is open to those who self-identify as racialized individuals as defined by the CRC. This includes people with other aspects of social identity that intersect with being a racialized individual (e.g. a racialized person with a disability or disabled racialized person). Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. As the Tier 2 CRC in Digital Inclusion you will complement the applied and professional nature of faculty at Royal Roads University. As the Tier 2 CRC in Digital Inclusion, you will broaden the university’s transdisciplinary research agenda. By developing a research program in areas broadly related to Digital Inclusion, the successful candidate is expected to address urgent, complex issues in areas such as the relationships or implications between digital inclusion and economic and workforce development, civic participation, education, healthcare, and public safety, among others. Twitter Data Access Update

There is an important account of the impact of the loss of access to the Twitter API in the paper today: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/06/20/twitter-policy-elon-mu… The restrictions on the free API are a problem, though the idea of free in this context is misleading. It was never free. Shareholders, lenders, and advertisers paid to make it possible to expose the data via APIs in ways that diverted attention from the real cost of engineers, buildings, electricity, bandwidth, lawyers, HR, sales people, and many other expenses that pay for large scale platform operations. Somebody always paid for all of that or else it went into the Twitter debt pile, which was large and growing at the time of the acquisition. The current owner has laid bare the finances of Twitter in stark and bizarre ways while undermining advertising. I have spent the last few months talking to a wide variety of stakeholders about what is possible now. There are third party data vendors that have deals with Twitter that predate and supersede the $42K/month options widely reported in the press. We are closer to launching a new multi-university consortium to ensure that at least some Twitter data remains accessible going into the fall 2023 semester and 2024. It will not be free or fully unlimited. It will not be "big data" on the scale of 10s or 100s of millions of Tweets. Nor will it arrive via the API, at least not at first. However, it will be well curated and stored in a manner where teaching and collaborative multi-institution research will take place with fresh data samples pulled weekly from the full Twitter firehose going back up to 15 months. Once the cornerstones of the data access consortium are established, new short-term and one-time options will come into play for students and other researchers that are not a part of the founding group of universities. Barring a mercurial violation of existing contracts, Twitter data will be accessible along with blogs, YouTube, and some other media sources as well. I have heard a number of compelling reasons to move on from Twitter while doing this consortium-building work. My concern is the loss of transparency at a critical juncture in history. There is a surging flow of openly problematic hate speech. Networks dedicated to election and COVID denialism are publishing massive amounts of content. A full-time post-J6 insurrection industry is ramping up powered by trolls and bots. The QAnons and anti-vaxxers are in the open telling preposterous stories and demanding violent revenge. If we move on from studying Twitter, or let one person determine the framework of possibility for thousands of academics, we may look back in the near future with some regret and wonder whether anything could have been done. History is path dependent. This is a proposed alternate path where we keep academic eyes focused on Twitter. The new owner may prefer to have academics give up, protest via workshops and special issues, and then move on. I am loath to comply with that planned diversion of attention. It is not safe for teetering democracies. My undergraduate professor of American political history, Howard Zinn, would likely urge us all to stay vigilant via collective action if he were here today. This is a moment where research, scholarship, and activism necessarily collide. You cannot stand still on a moving train. Anyone watching the RFK Jr Express leave the station, backed and boosted by the Twitter platform, knows the US election in 2024 is going to be an epic information war. This workshop focuses on critical issues in digital activism, traversing North-South boundaries to explore a range of themes and geopolitical contexts: the relation between embodied and digital forms of activism; digital archives as activist resources; repertoires of protest, and the mediation of affective and emotional solidarities. Across contributions, the workshop will attempt to envision a digital politics of location that addresses inequalities of race, class, gender and geography. Dear Cultural Data Analytics friends & colleagues, We invite abstract submissions for the Cultural Data Analytics Conference 2023 / CUDAN 2023, organized by the ERA Chair project for Cultural Data Analytics at Tallinn University, generously funded by the European Commission. Inspired by initial large gatherings of the cultural analytics community, including UCLA/IPAM 2016, and multidisciplinary conferences such as NetSci, IC2S2, or CSS, we aim to bring together researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders using methods of cultural data analytics to understand cultures and cultural production. This particularly includes multidisciplinary combinations of quantification, qualitative inquiry, computational analysis, and visualization to make sense of large cultural datasets, including visual, audiovisual, linguistic, and other genres of socio-cultural materials. Feeding into this mission, we welcome both multidisciplinary submissions, and contributions from specific disciplines, which aim to benefit from discussion in a multidisciplinary forum. We encourage discussion towards a deeper understanding of cultures and cultural production including aspects, methods, and intersections of the following fields: – cultural analytics, culturomics, and socio-cultural data science; – digital humanities and computational humanities; – cultural evolution, including experimental and observational approaches; – cultural complexity science, network science, computational social science, and social physics; – computational linguistics, quantitative aesthetics, critical computer vision, and machine learning; – art history, cultural history, cultural semiotics, film studies, musicology, and urbanism; – artistic research, algorithmic curation, and AI art (including aspects of cultural data analysis); – creative industries research, media economics, and policy studies; – data journalism and information visualization. Contributions ideally address at least one of the following subject domains (in line with state-of-the-art conceptual reference models for cultural data): – material aspects, including artworks, architecture, texts, images, sound, film, digital media, databases, and other forms of tangible cultural heritage; – conceptual aspects, including cultural practices, rituals, theories, policies, data models, narratives, imagined communities, and other forms of intangible cultural heritage; – social aspects, including human behaviour, human mobility, social networks, and social media; – temporal aspects, from slow historical processes to turbulence in today's economy of attention; – spatial aspects of historical topography, cultural geography, and urban dynamics; – event aspects, which combine the above aspects in cultural co-production, event series, tourism, etc.; – network aspects of socio-cultural interaction, including the inherent ecology of complex networks as documented in the structure and dynamics of large cultural knowledge graphs or blockchains associated with the crypto-art-market, for example. Conference program The CUDAN 2023 main conference programme (December 14-16, 2023) will include six keynotes covering the spectrum of relevant disciplines, a lightning talk session in the plenary, parallel sessions, and a poster section. The latter will run throughout the whole conference in the coffee and lunch area that is collocated with the plenum. The conference will close with a best poster and best paper award ceremony. The pre-conference day (December 13, 2023) will feature introductory workshops by CUDAN senior fellows, covering aspects of cultural data analysis and visualization using Python, R, Tableau, and the Collection Space Navigator. Before and after the main conference, we will offer sightseeing tours, including the medieval Tallinn old town and Christmas market (among many reasons to visit Estonia). We are further planning a meet the publisher's session and other opportunities for relevant stakeholders, including exhibition booths.
